Reincarnated As the Enemy's Wife: Married the Rival, Bound by Revenge-Chapter 289: Annie of Green Gables
Most of the books in the orphanage were donated by others, and therefore were always old or even broken.
A brand-new hardcover book like this was considered a treasure in the orphanage.
Holding it to her chest, she believed it was a gift of an angel or a fairy.
From then on, she gradually walked out of the shadow of Ethan’s departure.
She read the book carefully. It was about the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who was adopted by two middle- aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. She was very bright in personality and full of great imagination. She grew up to be a strong and independent girl who won the love and friendship of everyone around her.
It was considered one of the sweetest stories talking about a girl’s early life, a classic of all time.
Eva fell for the story too. Anne taught her that although life could be boring and cruel sometimes, one could lead a life full of poetry by keeping a positive attitude.
The book accompanied her for many years. She brought it to Nord School and then carried it back to Hiltonan.
Later, she was caught in part-time jobs and hadn’t had the chance to read it again for a long time.
Holding the book in her hands, Eva smiled and began to read it aloud.
"But if the path set before her feet was to be narrow she knew that flowers of quiet happiness would bloom along it. The joy of sincere work and worthy aspiration and congenial friendship were to be hers; nothing could rob her of her birthright of fancy or her ideal world of dreams..."
As she read, she suddenly heard a "bang"!
"Nicholas!" she cried out loud.
She was sure it was the sound of a car accident.
Blood was drained from her face.
"Nicholas? Nicholas! Are you alright?"
The phone stayed quiet for a while, Eva was worried sick.
She didn’t know how long had passed when she heard his voice again.
"Don’t worry. It was a minor accident. Someone scratched my car."
"A scratch? Where’re you? I’m coming," said she.
"No need. I’ll be there in five," said he.
Eva was still worried, but chose to believe him.
Nicholas was a man of his words. Although he just had an accident, he still drove to Eva’s place on time.
When his car arrived, waiting downstairs, she saw a clear dent in the luxury car. She had been waiting there for a while. Once she saw him, she rushed over, looking anxious.
"Is everything okay? Are you injured?"
Nicholas got out of the car. Once the door was opened, Eva smelled blood.
"It was nothing. I got a minor injury on my arm."
Eva took a look at what he called "a minor injury" and almost fainted. His whole arm was covered by blood.
His car was also wrecked. But instead of going to the hospital first, he drove to her home.
She wanted to scold him, but she blamed herself so much that she couldn’t even say a single harsh word to him.
"It’s all my fault. If I hadn’t called you, you wouldn’t have come here."
...
She suspected that she had distracted him because she was reading a book and felt more guilty about it.
"Annie of the Green Gables" had always brought her good luck, but now, Nicholas had a car accident because she was reading it for him.
Once Nicholas walked into Eva’s place, he saw the book she left on the table.
He had never read it but could tell it was the one she was reading to him just now from the way it was placed. "It looks old. Did you get it when you were a kid?" he asked.
"It’s not a good time to talk about books. Sit down."
He seated himself on a chair and picked up the book as if he was not injured at all.
Eva took out her medical kit from the bedroom and said to him, "Show me your arm."
One hand holding the book, he unbuttoned his shirt with the other and took off his top, revealing his firm muscles, and his injured arm was right before her eyes.
She had always known that he had a beautiful muscular body, but was still impressed to see him naked in her living room.
She swallowed hard and calmed herself down. Then she crouched down to attend to his heavy arm and began to take care of his wound carefully.
Checking the book held by the other hand, he suddenly asked, "Where did you get it?"
"To be honest, I don’t know," replied Eva, then she told him everything about the book.
"One day, I woke up and found it under my pillow. I loved it when I was a kid, but I still don’t know who gave it to me."
Nicholas’ expression turned a little serious after listening to her story. Concentrated on patching his arm, she didn’t notice it. All that she cared about at the moment was his injury.
She was not born with a silver spoon in her mouth like Yvonne. Her experience at the orphanage and in the workplace made her a strong and independent woman, and patching wounds was not difficult for her.
She had always been taking care of her own minor injuries. And this time, she patched his wound with bandages pretty well too, which was a surprise to Nicholas.
"You keep surprising me, don’t you?" said he.
She cleaned things up and got up from the floor.
"I still suggest you go to the hospital tomorrow. Just to have an examination, you know... Hmmm..."
Just as she stood up, she was pulled by him into his embrace, and her legs were sitting on his.
Eva blushed scarlet red when she realized how intimate they were.
"Stop it..."
He kissed her passionately before she could say another word.
The atmosphere was still heavy a few seconds ago, but now everything had become so sweet and intimate.
The room seemed to heat up and Eva got dizzy from his kisses. He held her by her hair and made her look into his eyes. His grip was not that tight but she couldn’t move at all. She felt her heart was beating like a drum.
"Why didn’t you accept my help and work with Ralph instead?" he whispered into her ears. His breaths were burning her earlobes.
She didn’t understand what he was talking about at first. When she realized he was referring to the Smart Piano incident, he kissed her again. His kisses were so passionate, and his grip was so possessive as if he wanted to lock her up and have her all to himself.
...
Like a fish on the ground, Eva felt she could no longer breath.
It was as if she was drowning in his passion without being suffocated, alluring and intoxicating.
"I... mmm... I..."
She couldn’t find a chance to speak a full sentence.
When she finally got a chance to breathe, she looked at him dizzily, her watery eyes filled with desires.
"I didn’t refuse your help and choose to work with him. I just want to solve this problem on my own, with my own abilities and my connections."
Ralph was one of her connections in her perspective. He was her university schoolmates. She got into the university and won access to the Arts Department on her own. He was part of the network she built.
"I must achieve my career on my own. So when I stand by your side, I’ll feel equal to you."
Otherwise, the traumas she had in the orphanage would haunt her for life. She would never feel good enough for him. After all, he was so talented, mature, charming...
"How can I stand by your side if I am not strong enough? You said I will face many dangers as your woman."
The Brown family had many enemies, and Nicholas couldn’t and wouldn’t just run away from them.
Therefore, his woman couldn’t afford to be fragile and vulnerable. She must become someone he could trust and fight alongside.
Hearing her words, he looked at her face that was right in front of him. Her cheeks were still burning, and her nose was sharp and tall. She looked a little cold, but very smart.
But at the moment, she looked even a little cute, the contrast of which made her irresistible.
He picked her up with his uninjured arm and walked towards the bedroom.
...
In the bedroom, their whispers came from the dark.
"But you’re injured..."
"It’s nothing serious."
"Really?"
"Nothing is serious enough to stop me from wanting you."
She blushed at his words, and they spent a beautiful night together.
The next day, Eva woke up.
The morning sunlight shone through the white curtains and shed cast patterns on the bed.
When she woke up, the first thing she thought about was Haby. Nicholas told her Haby had been quite lonely recently. Its spirits went low being left alone in the villa.
Unlike cats, dogs were very clingy to their masters, and a Pomeranian like Haby required even more attention. It would only be cheerful around its master, and no other caregivers could make them feel better.
Eva was very touched when she heard Haby was missing her. "I shouldn’t have left it alone in the villa, but my apartment..."
She was living in an old neighborhood, and the sound insulation here was not that good.
She didn’t know whether she could keep a pet. She used to be very cautious when practicing piano at home.
But last night, Nicholas told her, "We don’t have to move the dog. You can just move yourself."
It took her a while to realize that he was asking her to move in.
Spellbound by his charm, she somehow agreed to it, and Nicholas was already ready to pack her luggage.
But today, there was something important on her schedule. She needed to visit the Hiltonan Council before moving in with him.
