In the arena, I stared at Yami sharply with an expressionless face.

He was wearing a simple black kimono and a Japanese-style straw hat, with the unsheathed Yamato at his side.

Meanwhile, I was wearing my usual Night Terror outfit, my face covered with a black mask, and holding BlackHail firmly.

Glutton was standing right on my shoulder, looking at Yami with some hesitation.

'I'll try to scratch him at least.'

[It's impossible without using our full power.]

Glutton hit me with the hard truth immediately.

Night Terror was basically useless against that ghost, and even the spells I had copied weren't enough to hold him back.

Yami was a Tier-5… Exalted? I wasn't sure, actually. He was formally a cultivator, but he got a strange core later.

He was almost emotionless, so all the fear-based abilities were useless against him. Zephyr's Tier-3 barrier spell wouldn't do anything against him, and I didn't think I'd need the healing spell if he defeated me with one attack.

In addition to that, Glutton and I would hide many things — like the cosmic fire, our fusion, Glutton's wind affinity and his human form.

Yeah, we were likely going to get slammed.

"Should I attack today or only keep blocking? If I use a lot of strength, I may defeat you by mistake."

Hearing Yami's question, I felt some humiliation.

I knew I was too weak compared to him, but it still hurt to hear it from him.

I sighed. "Haa… just do whatever you want. I'll start."

Without waiting for his answer, I drew four arrows and launched them together.

One of them flew to the sky, splitting into tens of smaller lightning arrows.

The second shimmered as if it contained countless stars, moving with a pull force like a black hole.

The third arrow wasn't even visible, flying quickly without a sound or presence.

The last arrow was spinning rapidly, covered in what seemed like radioactive lightning.

Facing all the arrows, Yami didn't hesitate to hold Yamato.

*Click!*

With a soft click, Yami unsheathed Yamato, covering it in abyssal flames and spun it, cutting through the rain of lightning arrows.

At the same time, a maw of pure darkness burst out of his back and ate the wind arrow that I secretly teleported behind him.

"Your invisibility isn't perfect yet," Yami said before casually aiming the tip of Yamato at the shimmering arrow.

Instantly, a beam of cold flames burst out of the sword, turning my arrow into a block of ice.

Before the last arrow could touch him, a halo appeared above Yami as two spectral claws grabbed the arrow.

The arrow exploded into a storm of lightning and radiation, vaporising the spectral claws completely. But Yami remained untouched.

All of a sudden, a huge sphere of lightning gathered above the arena, then I began to make another arrow.

Slowly, the sphere continued to fall, sending lightning strikes toward Yami. Simultaneously, I cast several invisible spells, but Yami only kept swinging his dark blade to block them. But I had expected that — I only needed to buy myself some time.

Using space to compress as much lightning as possible, a shaky, unstable purple arrow materialized in my hand.

I drew the arrow and aimed at Yami, waiting for the perfect moment.

A moment later, I shot the compressed arrow without hesitation. And when it was close to reaching Yami, I teleported it to his back.

*Boom!*

All of a sudden, the lightning sphere exploded, sending hidden wind attacks that were kept inside the sphere.

Simultaneously, that stupid bird finally decided to move as he cast 6 cosmic beams, all aimed at Yami from different directions.

A rain of invisible blades, an explosion of lightning, six cosmic beams, and a compressed lightning arrow — all of them surrounded the lone figure of Yami.

"Not bad, but not enough."

All of a sudden, pillars of darkness and cold flames erupted out of the ground, moving like snakes and stopping all my attacks, either by freezing or devouring them.

Then the next moment, Yami created a barrier of darkness, and when it disappeared, he was gone.

My sense of danger erupted.

'Shit!'

I started teleporting across the arena while trying to find him, using magical attacks randomly in the hope of catching him somehow.

My spatial awareness was now able to sense spectral beings, like Glutton's soul inside me, but Yami was a special case.

He wasn't merely a normal soul, but an abyssal soul that had soul affinity!

His soul methods couldn't be compared to anyone else.

As I was teleporting, my body suddenly froze, then I saw a dark blade touching my neck.

"Ỳ̡̛̀̕͢͢͡ờ̷͜͟u̸̷͟͜͝ lost."

'I knew this would…'

Sighing helplessly, I stopped floating and returned to the ground.

"See you again next week, I guess?"

"No… not this time."

Yami shook his head.

"See you tomorrow… I'll attend the exam as well."

"Huh?"

Did he just say that he was going to attend the exam?

Yami scratched his head and explained: "Umm… Lunara will be observing the exam of the fourth year, Uncle Kyle and other teachers will be observing the third, and the same thing for the second year. Lunara said the exam of the first Ỳ̡̛̀̕͢͢͡ear is safer and asked me to observe it with the teachers… to gain experience."

My eyes almost lit up, but I stopped it.

'Is this good or bad news?'

If he really observed the exam, he'd be in danger, just like all of us, which was something I didn't want to see.

But on the other hand, was there anyone better than Yami to be with us?

Maybe he wasn't as strong as the teachers, but he might be the strongest being under Tier-6!

With him on our side, our chances of surviving would increase significantly.

Additionally…

'He can store souls…'

I didn't forget how he carried his friends' souls with him the entire time until he won the show.

I didn't know what he was capable of now, but wasn't there a chance he could now make souls reincarnate? Maybe like the madman in the grimoire he got?

"Anyway," Yami cut off my thoughts. "You can go now. I have to give Zephyr and Arthur their artifacts. This will leave only Selene and Aria without… their gifts."

Before I could say anything, I was back into my suite, finding myself alone.

[Alone? She teleported me with you.]

Well, that's if we exclude Kyle, who was probably lurking.

[Hey!]

'Anyway, you have a sword now. Go to Zephyr's suite and test it with him. Try to be useful once in your life!'

Thankfully, Kyle couldn't lurk in other students' suites, so Glutton was safe with Zephyr.

[Tsk, okay.]

As Glutton left the suite, I remembered something and said:

'Also, tell him… never to let go of his sister's hand.'

[....Yes.]

Sitting alone in the suite, I glanced at my bracelet and let out a sigh.

'This is really going to be painful… good thing my pain resistance improved.'
