Chapter 114: Chapter 114

There is a moment of shocked bewilderment were me and Ethan stay quiet until we finally speak up, saying the same words almost on top of each other: "What? Demon Lord?"

She gives a toothy smile back at our reaction, leaning back and provoking Ethan: "What? Too scared to fight me now boy?"

"Even more pumped to do so." Ethan says, and I can feel the adrenaline burning in his veins from here just by looking at his suddenly flashing crimson eyes.

Before this can go any further, which I knew it would, I slap the back of Ethan’s head with my fluffy tail.

"Ouch, oi!"He says, rubbing the back of his head.

"Please continue." I say, ignoring Ethan’s reaction, but having a satisfied twist of the tail midair behind me.

"Do you really want to continue? I mean, you two seem to need some alone time with all this tension." The fox kid says, trying to find an excuse to avoid the subject while provoking us, and as I’m about to stare a hole through his skull I stop before acting harshly, looking at him before opening my mouth only to see just a clueless kid biting down on a fruit, sincerely asking us if we needed time alone.

And I don’t know which one is worst, if he would be asking and making fun of us, or sincerely asking so.

"Well, I would mind continuing-"Ethan starts but I stop him right away.

"Enough now you two, please Natasha ignore this buffoon and continue." I say, feeling my ears heat up already, damn these two, my heart did not have enough time to recover from our last alone session yet, and he wants another one already, so bluntly bringing it up, or at least trying to.

Although I cannot help but feel a little excited at the possibility too...

"All I could define it as is an endless hunger." The warrior woman talks, and for a moment I think she is reading the situation too deeply or even reading my mind at that, still making fun of our relationship, but one look at her empty smile and blank reminiscing gaze tells me is not us that she sees at that moment, but the surely painful memories of the past.

"Mind you that most of my memory stayed attached to my body, seems that this soul state of mine cannot remember the details very much, but something what is very vivid for me are the emotions, the strong sensations, and I know that there is something really wrong there." She starts, giving answers and enigmas on the same measure.

"But the thing is... even us, who had been there when it happened, cannot give you much, it is something consuming, corrosive, almost like a famish entity trying to swallow everything hole."

"Uhm, that’s right, there are even rumors that the Ghost City fog has been expanding for the last years... Some think the city Lords have been meeting in secret to discuss the situation, but depending on them nothing is going to happen until the fog reaches their doorstep." Says the black fox, tail swaying behind him.

"But what about the Demon Lord?" Wasn’t he supposed to unify them all like the warrior woman is said to have done in the past, like many others? Wasn’t his presence supposed to mean unity? Although I know it not to be the case with this one, selfish and cruel as the devil, still he should do something to keep the credibility of his title, shouldn’t he?

"Pff, the what? That sscumbag of a demon? The only thing he has is the title and the power, no respect and sense of responsibility that comes from it." Natasha says with a little bit of a growl in her voice, so angry about it that it intensifies her hissing split of the lip on the S.

I can sense the tension increase but this is not a subject that I intend to continue, or rather, is one of the few that I may know more about them they, and I was about to change the focus back to the current mission when Ethan does it before me:

"Please continue, what can you tell us about that place? After all if you were the Demon Lord wouldn’t you know what happened? Some even believe it was your fault that it became like that in the first place..." This time Ethan is the one to push the two to speak, but I can feel his body tense up against my belly under the subject of the current Demon Lord, which is quite odd but I guess a natural reaction when the current Lord is the main subject of the conversation.

Like I said before, for demons strength is everything, and more than not things are taken by force because of it...

My long tail hits the floor a couple of times, twisting in the air as my eyelids narrow at him until Natasha starts talking again, interrupting the fox who clearly got upset about the comment and grows uncomfortable the more this conversation drags up:

"It might as well be, but as I said, my memory has taken a hit and keeps escaping me, so I cannot give you much details about it, only that... I remember having discovered that demons with human blood could pass barriers imposed against demons, one of our greatest weaknesses by far, being bound to rituals and circles of magic. I do remember unifying the lands, and searching for a way out, something that we wanted so dearly... but I do not know the consequences of such studies, so the famish fog may as well be a result of that." She says in a monotone voice, but funny enough her eyes do not leave the foxes thought the

We all stay in silence as the repercussion of her words reach us, of how she just admitted to the possibility of being responsible for the death of an entire city of demons, taking so many innocent lives in the blink of an eye just like that, and that included her own.

"However one thing I did not forget is the name of every combat who I fought in a life and death battle against, Callum, the demon slaver down the street, Reece, the knight with no back bone." She starts saying all their names out loud, but not only that but a short saying about their backgrounds, starting from petty robbers and thieves, to great enemy warriors. "Reuben the Tempest, Yael the Butcher, Colette Castillo, the beautiful fury..."

So many battles to the death, so many that she survived and stood to tell the tale, just shows how strong she really is, mind and body.

At the end I had already forgotten the first ones she told us, leaving not only a quiet awe for the great amount, but for the wretchedness of it all, of so many lives lost.

"And in the end I was defeated by my own actions, a mere fog that I might as well have created myself. Pathetic really..."

Is the first time I see a crack on her smug smile, but for some reason it does not make her look weak, in fact I think that would be an impossible endeavor, for even now she looks at her own afterlife with a requiem of confidence and fierce fire that not many souls would have in the first place, much less hold such supremacies in her circumstances.

But count on Ethan to provoke her, or cheer her up, hard to tell, maybe both, as he says:

"I’ll make sure to remember yours when the time comes." Says Ethan, who earns a smirk back.

"Oh really? Came a little too late, did a really good job of outing myself, but still I’ll make sure to remember yours too when you finally fall before me." She says, but at some point this cheeky back and forth battle of theirs became somewhat of a brotherly friendship.

I roll my eyes at that. Children, all of them.
