Chapter 130: Chapter 130

Describing it as human may be a stretch though, I think as I take the details in, humanoid and relativity tall, wearing some sort of armor with green long plates shaped as leaves put together like scales and opening around the legs as a big skirt to conceal his legs movements, it had both its hands resting upon a big sword pome as it’s pointy edge stay sink in on the ground.

The biggest dissimilarity, however, it’s the creature itself, the face looking as a piece of lumber with many mushrooms of all shapes and colors growing alongside its skin, and for a moment I could swear it was just a strange statue made-up by the demons that lived here, and yet I am proven wrong by the creaking and crackling sound that comes from him and soon reaches our ears.

"Ahh, another mouse, I see, never learn, they did, away with you, before you meet your doom, as you well know these roots are not for you, away with you you do." A grave rasping voice sounds from that direction and it takes me a moment to not only realize who the speaker is but the meaning of his words as well, and that is far more than the creature needs to take action.

All I know is that, one second there is no movement and the next second Ethan’s hand is pulling me back by the arm and a sword, once still as a rock, has descended down like a scythe right in front of me, denting the stone floor with its strength and weight, the cracks reaching my feet.

After that we are quick to react though, and soon me and Ethan have our weapons unsheathed, bracing ourselves for combat.

And yet after hearing us and our movement instead of attacking once more the mushroom creature actually freezes in place and stops, and for a moment it goes back to the lifeless state it was before, looking like a statue once more but this time around it did not fool anyone.

And then it opens its eyes very so slowly, coming out from its slumber.

The trunk like face opens many diagonal diamond shaped holes and from within a green light shines from, resembling very ethereal eyeballs as they seemed to fixate on us.

We stand still too, waiting for an attack or an response, any reaction at all as we face this strange enemy at an even stranger place, and for a moment we are as motionless as it, all stopped in time for a long second.

"... Who are you? Some kind of humanoid too... but no rats or mice you be..." After continuously speaking in this strange way the creature actually goes back to his initial position and stays completely still once more. "Forgive my rudeness, no harm was meant, the only thing I wish is to deal a repellant slash at the vermin that stays." 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

This funny way he speaks seems almost as if he is trying to rhyme all the words, but for what I can tell he did not mean any harm and truly thought us to be rats.

"No harm has been done. My name is Seraph, and this is Ethan, nice to meet you..."

"Eanraig MacIlleBhuidhe at your disposal little one." He says as he bends down a little to level our eyes, and it is strange to perceive a smile on his face, but stranger it is to see it gone once his eyes land on me, close up enough that even Ethan can see the wooden wrinkles on his face, and yet as much as his mood changes and make me tense up I can tell next that actually his eyes are not exactly on me.

"My my, how time has a way to prove us mistaken, bringing such a being awaited long indeed." He pulls himself back, straightening himself, and I notice for the first time why such odd movements on his part; because his feet are literally rooted on the ground, hidden behind the armor.

"What are you doing here? A Spriggan like yourself, hidden away and with no treasure, that’s odd in itself..." Ethan asks straight to the point and the name, Spriggan, jolts a long forgotten conversation, one so far that I still laid my small paws down the snow as I listen to mothers tales and teachings, about her own adventures and the creatures she met along the way.

I wonder how she will react when I tell her mine as she did with hers.

The point is, however, that the creature that stands before us, a plant like being that is usually found protecting something, guardians of the forest as they were, but Ethan’s mistake it’s quite common as they are usually found in treasure chambers, bound there by greedy creatures seeking to protect their treasures that use the Spriggan’s protective instincts against them.

I change Ethan’s question a little and say: "Such a desolate place, what a being like yourself is protecting here?"

I start with a simple question, but I sure have a lot more than just these two questions I start with, the biggest of them all being: how are you still alive after so long?

"Ahh but there is where you are mistaken, little one, for there is a lot to be taken in the past that lays here among us."

"So you are keeping the story of this place alive? That is the treasure you protect?" I am quick to catch, knowing that mystical creatures like himself are as strange as they came, and living for hundreds of years demons and creatures are becoming my normal after him and the one on my neck, barely scratching the odd label surface anymore.

"Ah, obscure times indeed, were no fresh life came to be, were the color vanished away bringing blindness to the aware, were the void took away all the hope to exploit life as it may." He creaks his fingers in the air, bending and snapping like branches, before saying: "Time may take to tell you all the way, but one thing for certain, is that the one to blame is among us today."

I frown as his many eyes focus on me at the same moment that the tip of his sword points straight at me.
