Chapter 80: Chapter 80

The attack shifted the ship to the side and as the attack hits the opposite side we were only when the ship is very crooked to the side we can see down below over the ground floor.

And I would not have minded if I hadn’t seen it for a lifetime.

We were reaching an island for sure, I could tell by the shape not too far down on the horizon, only that, between us and the land, is a gigantic purple tentacle popping from the ocean deep waters and curving mid air, reaching far and wide.

And hitting us in the process.

Thankfully it must have been with the back of it for the other side of the limb would have us glued to its sucking lumps and pulled us down into the dark abyss of the sea.

Well just as well, why not have a giant monster attacking us before we even have the chance to set foot on the island? Worst is, the barrier that the walls had before preventing cultivators from using flying devices is present on the ship as well, so there is no way for them to react and fight without losing the chance of coming back onboard.

And a sea full of monsters or an island full of demons did not seem like the choice one not out of their minds would make, and yet is the exact one we do, especially when they are quick to dismiss us and say:

"Fellow cultivators, good morning, it seems that we have encountered trouble before arriving so we won’t be able to proceed closer to the island, those who still wish to participate in the contest need to leave immediately for we are about to turn around, in a month we will be back to take you all to the main continent. I have high expectations of you all!" The Auction Owner’s voice sounds all over through one of the many bronze pipes, but the news he gives sets down some in a screaming fit while lightining other complains.

Everything is so sudden that even I, who keeps my guard up most of the time, had a few seconds of delay before understanding what is going on.

"Wait, they want us to get there on our own? How the fuck do we do that if we cannot use our flying devices!" "They want us to just jump off right here?" "This is madness!" Some people voice out the worries of many, and as part discussed the injustice the others try to think of a way to get down without dying to the fall or the sea monster.

As time is ticking the flying boat starts turning back around, its cannons appearing around it and shooting the purple tentacle to the side, but it did little to even scratch the surface of such thick skinned creature.

The great part is that we would not have to worry about getting back since they gave us one use exclusive and time limited amulets that would transport us right back on board when in reach once one of us was done with the mission... or had just have been too incapacitated from doing so. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Yeah, what a lovely feature, so kind of them to think about retrieving the bodies of those who fell wearing the amulet... or perhaps they just want to make sure we all got back with ours in hand and did not sell the amulets, although it would turn useless after a month as, coating them, their runes and spells would prevent us from doing so as they are changed regularly, like a new password coded magic.

Lovely mission and countermeasures, and looked quite promising if the first thing to greet us even before arriving on the island weren’t a gigantic monster.

However, even though there was much to think and hesitate about, there are those who did not and, the next moment, they stepped forward; first the whipping vile woman and her small army, throwing her hair back and taking an earing off that had a small silver boat swinging at its edge.

To my surprise she does not only throw it over the edge, but jumps right after, no fear mantling her face as she goes straight lined into a monster’s arms, drooping sky high, making all who watched gasp at not only her being the first person to do so, but seemly in a suicidal way.

Only that, after dodging the monster’s attack by whipping her way around, twisting and turning and even walking along the purple skin of the creature, when she is far down enough she waves at her falling earring and I see with my own eyes how expensive magical tools behave as that boat suddenly grows on size, feeding off her energy and, as if riding on a makeshift river of energy, is kept afloat as her feet hits its silvery surface.

As if her feat had been nothing she simply crosses her arms over her chest and guides the boat away, waves of energy moving on its makeshift river as the skies seemed solid underneath it, and only then a man in black, one of her followers, the quiet sharp type, did jump off after her, riding his own sword when out of the protecting field of the ship.

Right, this may be a group effort it seemed, most had parties of two put together.

"I guess I will be going then." Says the next, and I’m not surprised to see the bulky man who had fought the lady before, although the way he does so raises an eyebrow on my face as he simply starts laughing like a mad man and just jumps down, and keeps going down, and down and even more down, until even my eyes cannot keep track of him anymore, dropping like a rock he is.

Is... is that ok? He did not just jump off to his death now did he?

The silence that follows after his fall among the other cultivators tells me they are thinking the same thing.

I pity the person paired with that guy if there is any, I think as a swallow a sigh. And speaking of partners...

"So... any plans? Because using magical devices and flying and shit is not really my thing just so you know..." Ethan says, approaching, brushing his hair and apologetically giving me a dimple bright smile.

"Lucky for you I do have a plan." His eyes brighten up with my words, and he says:

"Oh really? Do tell!"

Feeling a little cheap I do not say anything before I approach, eyes locked on his, making his smile twist, worried but not ready to admit, but his eyes truly widen when I pass an arm around his waist, keeping him there a while as we have a moment of silence that makes his curiosity grow bigger than his mischievousness for once as he does not say anything about the contact, but I can tell he receives my approach quite well.

And before taunting words leave his lips or I succumb to rolling my eyes at him I simply bend my knees and jump off the ship, bringing him with me.
