Chapter 84: Chapter 84

We were so shocked by the image that both of us stare without blinking as the man we soon recognize as the burly cultivator simply comes speed swimming at us like a mighty shark, a rhythm to behold as he did not slow down not even when he reaches the sand, and after shaking like a wet dog he opens his legs in a sumo stand and roars with might to the sky, mixing it with laughter and oozing testosterone and adrenaline as his veins and muscles budge.

...He is the clear case of thick muscles no brains type isn’t him? And yet I cannot get myself to dislike the guy, strange as it is, he is true to himself in the end.

However... he is not, let’s say, the sharpest tool in the shed.

Coming up to a completely strange place and roaring, obviously he attracted unwanted attention, and as I frown and stand to have a better look Ethan pulls me by the arm, saying:

"Let’s see this play out." It was my idea as well, after all that man did not seem to be the type that needed saving, and I use the opportunity to see the unique creatures that this apparently hellish isolated island has to offer.

And I was not left disappointed.

The group is hard for a human to spot, a pack of seemly hunting wolves moving along the foliage, and even I had some difficulty picturing the creature whole as the leaves kept getting in the way, but by slitting my eyes and with my owl vision it did not take long for me to count them up.

And they may move on four like wolves in a group the resembles ended there. With black long slim bodies it is hard to make out the lighter spots along with its short fur that made him fuse with the plant’s shadows even more, and with very long legs that ended in golden claws it is easy for him to put his head out and above the plants to see its prey, and that’s probably why the only colorful part of his body is his head, opening up wide when out like a lion mane but in a format that resembled a flower, yellow and bright at most, but with some bright variations here and there that hide a pair of sharp hunting eyes in the middle of it.

And they were coming straight for the guy, surrounding him, and because of this tropical forest reaching all over until the sand, they got pretty close to the man while hidden before jumping up at him.

Three attack at once, one locks its jaw on his arm, quickly raised by the man to protect his face, the other creature is on his leg as the third and slower of the bunch earns a back slap by the man to the face that sends it flying back to the grass.

Thankfully now, out of the grass and because of my great vision, I’m able to use appraisal even at this distance, an ability that I mostly forgot to use since it did not show information about creatures much higher level than me and, well, humans cultivators were like that for the most part of my life, so is no surprise that I ended up using it only against animals and appraising the supplies that I use to enchant.

Gold Clawed Hounds – With pack behavior they have the tendency to live in groups of 4 to 10 individuals, with hierarchy types bases on the power and proficiency of each individual. They camouflage their bodies well with the environment they are born into, and the adaptation level is higher than most, from conserving water in their bodies in the desert habitats to growing plant like appearances on their faces and back in tropical places. Fortunately there are mostly isolated on an island, otherwise if brought to the main continent they would unbalance the natural order with their fast growth rate.

Wait, are their claws actually made of gold? I think you are mistaken then appraisal, if they went to the main continent they would be extinct in no time by groups of greedy humans hunting them down for the gold.

With the new knowledge my eyes go back to the battle in front of me, and yet for some reason it does not feel like a battle at all for the man being mauled by the hounds is completely unfazed by it, standing up like a mountain and cracking his neck, he just throws and kicks the beasts out, unfazed by their attack as if his skin was made of thick leather and punishing the beast almost like a bad behaving pup, without putting too much thought to it and yet the hounds don’t seem very eager of having another go at him after a single punch of his.

It almost makes me want to whistle in surprise. The guy had some strength behind his tough act after all.

"... Why are you looking at him like that? That wasn’t impressive at all, against such low level beasts..." Ethan commentary makes me want to roll my eyes at his jealous display, but most of what he says gives me that feeling so I hold the reaction back.

But before I could retort or decide if I wanted to provoke back or not something beside Ethan catches my eye, and at that point I’m grateful for the advantage of my night owl vision which is more focused on finding movement than seeing colors or shape, making so that the camouflage that the creatures around here seem to have turn out to be useless against me, and that’s how I find the spider over the wall.

Flower Spider – Unique species from the demon island, is a very poisonous type that has the format of a red petal flower that is known to represent death. It keeps its camouflage by letting its thin petal like red legs in the air to move with the breeze like a real flower does, and once its prey it’s in reach it launches itself into a deadly poisons hug that paralyze its victim for the spider to eat it alive.

Charming, I think while taking my fan out and brushing the creature out of the tower and away from Ethan’s face.

"I suggest we sleep downstairs and close the doors and windows while doing it."

He is very eager to agree with me on that.

It seems that I will need to leave my guard up even more than I usually do, I think with a frown while slowly moving my fan in front of me, deep in thought, without realizing that my actions of saving Ethan from the spider, even though he had seen it beforehand and was about to move to the side, have given him a satisfied smile to his lips, and a storm for a heart.
