Chapter 85: Chapter 85

Soon however Ethan is laughing out loud and I have a dumbfounded expression on my face with the next scene that unfolds before me.

That-that guy... there was nothing noble of being true to oneself in him, he was just simply very...dumb.

"See, there is no one like me, you should be grateful."

"Comparing yourself to him won’t make you grand you know."

"Ugh, that’s..."

As we talk we have to speak loudly over the laughing of the bulky cultivator flying above our heads, being carried away by a flying beast with long feathers and yet small wings that looked bifurcated like a banana tree leaf, yet were purple like the petals of the most poisonus plant.

"Giving me a ride? Thanks pal!" I hear the man say as the beast hooks its long talons over the big man’s shoulders, carrying him away into the jungle with clear not friendly intentions towards him.

I just sigh at the view and try to get rid of the image in my mind and move on, I’m sure he will be fine, people like him must have a very auspicious star guarding him to have survived thus far.

Plus I had my own plans and worries at the moment to help a stranger out, even more one that did not appear to need my help at all.

And yet even the somewhat easy going situation did little to lighten the mood of the dangerous situation, and as much as the travel itself while carrying Ethan has put some strain on my usually hidden wings, still this mission took priority and we had no time to stay idle, even though we had a month to complete the rescue not only the kid’s life was in danger the more we waited, but we risked losing the chance of saving them by losing to the other cultivators send on this mission as well.

In the end, we did not have time to waste, and Ethan seemed to agree with me, however we should not be hasty to the point of putting our lives on the line, so we end up preparing a base too.

"I’m going to scan the area over the island so we can have a clearer idea of which direction to follow." I say, preparing the magical crystal necklace that Lewis Fraser gave to every team before departing, saying that such crystal would react to his children since their magic has a very unique signature.

And that is the key to finding her in such a big place in such a short time, though I wonder, with so many resources, why he hadn’t done it himself, the man seemed more capable than a bunch of random cultivators chosen on a whim...

"Good idea, bring me back the results so we can discuss our plans then, I know the island sufficiently well." Says Ethan as I nod back, as eager to fly as to hear what he has to say about this place and to what extent does the know the place as well.

I leave my cape behind and put just some effort into hiding, glamouring my feathers, but as soon as I’m far away from prying eyes I completely change forms, a quick light flashing over my body and rune and soon after I am stretching my big snow leopard paws in the air, my lungs taking in the chilling characteristic wind from above, wings open wide and long tail whipping in the air.

Ah, how I miss this, still one of the few things able to calm my turmoiling mind and lighten my heavy heart, so natural and peaceful that it completed me in a way, a simple task with a simple meaning, nothing complicated about it, that’s what exercising like this feels like, natural and fulfilling.

Plus if any of the other cultivators had the same idea and were searching around above the tree tops, my owl form would be a disguise that could prevent any annoying complications as some may want to get rid of the competition.

Utterly annoying human behavior, but expectable nonetheless.

I flip around, nodding my owl head to myself, the pressure of pretending to be one of them pilling up by the years, and yet knowing there is still a long way to go all I can do is endure and enjoy these few moments of freedom.

Is more than my mother has, so I should not complain, I think while closing and opening my paws, itching to bite at my own fluffy tail for comfort.

I sigh, shaking my head, trying to clear my thoughts and focus on the mission, the faster we are done here the faster I can get my mother to safety...

With my sharp gaze there is little that I cannot see, however calling this an island makes it sound much smaller than it actually is, and as much as it cannot be compared to the main continent it does has sufficient land to accommodate an entire hoard of demons, so I bet it would take a few days of fly to cross it entirely.

Still I flap my wing and ride the wind as far as I can without losing my bearings, going in a straight line so as not to get lost in this strange place with my lack of sense of direction, and see as much as I can as the stone guides me forward.

At first there is much greenery, with many bird-like creatures blending in with the environment; well for those who did not see or hear as I; but soon the place expands, with volcanos puffing heat and ashes into the sky, those which I avoid like the plague, already feeling the effects of such hot temperatures on my furry feather coat.

Further up I see some far away constructions that resemble some towering castles with pointy towers, farther than I could reach at the moment as my gaze gave the advantage of seeing very far and covering more ground, but my exploration is rather limited as I try to focus on the mission at hand despise my curiosity to see these unexplored lands that were isolated for years, with unique plants, animals, customs, everything!

And yet my yellow owl eyes narrow when the stone starts blinking, indicating that I am close to my target.

It couldn’t be that easy now could it?

It wasn’t.
