Chapter 97: Chapter 97

The silence before the storm the forest had is quickly substituted by the bustling streets of the demon merchant city, close to the hotter and drier part of the island and, in accordance to Ethan, on the safe side of the volcanos, plural, and yet such hot and unpleasant to breathe place is full of people and life, which only increases the stagnant dusty hot air of this part of the island.

And I take back anything bad I may have thought about the tropical side, this dessert dry smelling of volcano ash place is much worse, and I can feel my sweat impregnating on my bone, even with my cultivating protection I could not wait to be completely immune to these kinds of things when my core formed completely and protected from mortal needs.

"Are you ok?" Ethan asks and not for the first time, and I only intensify my fanning as I grumble back.

"So hot..." This type of hotness is the worst, the type you cannot find any relief from, and I have never been more thankful for the shadows provided by the smartly put cloth dropping from one ceiling to the other on top of us and laying all over the streets, providing shade but not cutting the light completely.

Ugh, these negative status with fire and heat resistance are taking a tool out of me, especially adding loud conversations and narrow corridors full of people to the heated mix.

I did not complain though, that would only sour my mood further, so I vent by moving my fan with strength to try and ease some of the heat, and this time around Ethan was wise enough not to say anything.

At least I have plenty of things to distract me from the great discomfort, but I guess I should have expected such things on a demon infested island, the heat and the... species variety.

"This is under the Immoral Famish Demon Clan jurisdiction so is bound to have so many different creatures, plus they are the only ones without race and origin prejudice like the others so they have a big number of followers."

And I could see that right out of the bat, not that I knew how the other clans were formed, seemly by species and with some pure breed ideology to them, but this one is a complete mix and mess, the human looking ones being rarer, many long stretched out demons, horned demons, and plenty of magical creatures mixed together in a very colorful salad.

A bipedal green scaled tiger faced demon with red long hair talking with a human looking kid with white eyes and triple sized mouth with purple blood shinning behind its veins and behind its big fangs, another one with a bald head on top of a very long neck and a single big mouth over it all passing by us, an albino double armed creature with unblinking eyes taking the place in, a double faced big shoulder unproportioned fury demon, all so odd and weird that kept me on edge.

Sour mood and uneasiness, I want a break, ugh.

The worst thing, however, is the sensation of always being watched, of having pair of eyes on my back all the time, but part of it may be because of my wings as I come to realize that even those in front of me stare with a mix of awe and fear in their eyes.

"Can they sense we are cultivators?" I whisper ask Ethan, keeping my eyes up and attentive to any odd movement around and over our heads.

The moment I ask I doubt my own words, after all if they could tell we were cultivators and one a human at that they would not be so easily avoided, and not only did they have a long term disagreement with humans they too have their hate against cultivators of the called righteous path, especially when they keep invading this place to gain fighting experience and search for unique treasures, farming resources and shedding blood without a second thought.

Yeah, no matter how strong looking we are a city full of demons would not take cultivators in so kindly, and Ethan’s answer proves me right:

"No no, actually demons are very kin to the strongest of all rules and all that, and because of the barrier that is nowadays associated with the more human looking a demon is." He starts, getting closer so he did not need to scream above the crown noise for me to hear him. "Only a few could have contact with humans, and most of those were from prestigious and powerful families, so along the years the nobility became more and more human looking, usually carrying two forms even, and after they discovered that mixing human blood would power the demonic powers up and the humans farm came to life, well... many strong demons breed a lot to create strong offspring’s, which only made their households stronger the more they did it."

"That’s why this clan may be the most numerous and mixed of them all, but not the strongest for it, and that’s why the nobility of most clans is very reclusive you see..."

"Oh, so they think we are some sort of nobility then because we are very human looking?" Would make sense as they keep opening a path for us to walk through in a panic, and explains why there are so little human looking ones. "Uhm... I see." I say. " But still..."

"There are a lot of beast looking ones? Yeah, about that, there seems to be a lot of magical creatures around as they are concentrated around here and less frequently on the main continent for some reason, but back in the day your kind was considered to be demons too... but don’t take it to heart, even elves, orcs and dwarves were, basically or you were human or you were a demon, rough times I tell you, so some magical creatures got stuck on this island too."

"Take humans to paint everything black and white as is." I say but soon enough the subject dies once again as we keep walking and walking, and walk a little more, and by the time we stop I’m torn between relief and disbelief, looking up at the red lanterns and still empty balconies up above.

"This is..." I start, already knowing the answer.

"Well, were best to gather information than a whore house?" He shrugs and walks into the red district, having a reluctant me sighing behind him.

The faster we get this done with, the faster I get away from this hot place.
