Chapter 40: Silver Phoenix

"I don’t think I’ll be able to shut down the Future Eden... yet," Rael said, earning a nod from Alexandra. "But I can start preparing for its demise. As long as I’m young, I can enter the Future Eden without anyone suspecting me and see what it’s like from the inside. I’ll gather enough evidence of this evil part of the world and expose it to everyone!"

The truth was that people held prejudices against orphans, and barely anyone cared about them.

It made it easier for evil people to exploit children and use them for various projects.

That said, if the whole world saw exactly what was happening in the shadows, many would become vocal and demand it stop.

It was for that reason the stone‑faced man in a tuxedo wanted to control social media and hide the fact that one of the lab rats had been killed.

"Information is key. I’m reminded of it at every step. If we make enough people aware of those crimes, people like you will be able to start their own investigation for the greater good," Rael said.

As much as Alexandra didn’t want to admit it, Rael was right.

The world was aware of the Future Eden, but no one really knew what kinds of atrocities went on there.

If she tried to expose them or gather evidence, people of equal rank would stop her.

But if there was already evidence, she could go all out and surely wouldn’t be alone in the matter.

"It’s still too dangerous for a child like you," Alexandra said.

Smiling, Rael replied, "Yes. This time I want to ask you for help, Ma’am. I’m not being entrusted with anyone else’s life. I’m acting of my own accord. I want to help orphans like me and let them decide their own future. At most, I want them to serve under people who won’t just see them as expendable resources. Please, help me become stronger."

Rael bowed.

He wanted to learn more about other cores from Command Genesis and turn them into their own engines before embarking on this dangerous mission.

He wasn’t stupid enough to chase after evil right after defeating Sister Sophia.

He needed to become much stronger, and Alexandra von Karmesinthal held the answers he sought.

"In three years, I’ll be nine years old. By then, I should still be eligible for the Future Eden project and strong enough to escape that place on my own. Besides that, I might have allies in this endeavor as well," Rael added.

By allies, he meant other orphans who were currently exploited by people outside the military.

Togis didn’t allow Rael to believe everyone like that would be his ally, but at least some should cooperate with him for a better future.

By finding those talented orphans and forming a team with them, Rael’s chances of exposing the Future Eden rose sharply.

Moreover, he’d be able to help already corrupted people by opening their eyes to reality.

There was a lot on the plate, but Rael believed in himself.

But to begin all of this, he needed Alexandra’s aid.

He needed her network, influence, and strength.

"I don’t like it," Alexandra said, slicing through Rael’s enthusiasm.

"Why?" Rael asked.

"You’re just a kid," Alexandra replied. "You want to step into affairs that should be handled by adults. It’s still too much of a risk."

Rael raised his voice, "Do you want me to be like a normie?! Grow up, enter mandatory service, then be unable to do anything about the Future Eden like you?! I can’t sit still for twelve years and do nothing except train safely! That’s not what I want!"

Frustrated, Rael logged out of the virtual reality room, leaving the commander alone.

She looked at where he had been before closing her eyes.

What would you have done in my stead?

She thought of the late Ainsworth, aware he wouldn’t miraculously answer her.

"You have allowed your emotions to overcome you, Lord Rael," Dominica said upon Rael’s return to his personal virtual reality room.

Rael glanced at her before plopping onto a sofa.

He closed his eyes and spoke to everyone in the room.

"I don’t understand why she won’t let me take care of this! I defeated Sister Sophia! I’m more than capable!" Rael said.

Togis replied, "Just as Lord Rael believes orphans should live normal lives without being exploited, the commander wants you to remain a child. She isn’t aware of your reincarnation or the scope of your talent. This conflict of interests won’t be solved easily." 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Dominica said, "If she doesn’t want to cooperate and Lord Rael insists on following this path, results should be enough to make her cave. Once she realizes there’s nothing stopping Lord Rael, she’ll be forced to cooperate to preserve his life."

Shiran didn’t have room to add his two cents.

In fact, he only wanted to say aloud that these two spoke about deep things that made him feel even more excited.

"And that’s what I will do," Rael said. "I’ll become stronger so she’ll be forced to aid my growth and then my plans."

[You have received a new quest.]

[Convince Alexandra von Karmesinthal to cooperate with you.]

[Reward: Autonoms Storage.]

Rael smiled.

"Speaking of the storage, we have room for the third Steelborn. It will be the first step toward becoming even stronger."

Shiran excitedly hopped over his sofa and approached Rael.

"Lord Rael! Do you have an idea for the third one?!"

"Yeah," Rael said with a nod. "You’re our lion, and you cover the land. Togis is our tortoise, and he covers the water. Following this theme, our third Steelborn companion should cover the skies."

Shiran’s eyes twinkled.

"EPIC!"

Rael shifted on the sofa, no longer lying but sitting straight.

"We’ll have a silver phoenix in the skies."

Shiran let out a joyous cry.

"EPICCCCCCCCC!"

The little lion’s excitement was understandable.

Not only did the silver phoenix sound cool and fit the team, Rael’s divine bloodline was like a gacha that would bless the Steelborn with a unique personality.

There was a lot to look forward to.

Dominica and Togis shared in Shiran’s excitement.

Meanwhile, Rael shared in their excitement.

Though the stakes were, for now, much different, Alexandra wouldn’t be so easily convinced.

He needed a lot, and this third Steelborn was the first step on this new journey.

"He’ll be a new beginning," Rael said, opening his system window to begin a new blueprint for his Steelborn.

Aware that he would like her input, Dominica sat down beside him and looked at the screen as well.

It was the first time she had sat this close to him, and Rael couldn’t help but steal a few glances at her, only for Dominica to meet his gaze.

"Is there a problem with my avatar?" Dominica asked.

"All fine," Rael replied.

"Ok."

Seeing these two, Togis chuckled warmly.

Shiran didn’t even care about their interaction, impatiently waiting for the blueprint to be done so he could see their new companion in the virtual reality world where almost anything was possible.
