Remarriage Failed Again Today-Chapter 32: The Feeling of a Fishbone in the Throat
A slight smile touched Leona Grant’s lips.
’Good. This is great. He’d finally gotten rid of her.’
’He could finally stop facing that suffocating affection of hers—the kind she thought was good for him.’
She had no idea how much he detested her old, fawning smiles, her meddlesome concern, her relentless pursuit, and her unconditional support and companionship.
’That kind of love was too much trouble, too annoying. From now on, he was on his own again. He would no longer have to carry the title of a married man, a man with a wife, wherever he went.’
He was free.
But he didn’t understand. This was something he had longed for, so why couldn’t he feel happy at all in this moment?
Deep inside, something was hammering at his heart, each blow stronger than the last.
Especially when he heard her say, "I don’t love you anymore." It was as if a part of his heart had been stripped away, leaving an abrupt emptiness.
’So that was it. She was acting so abnormally because she didn’t love him anymore, not because she was playing hard to get.’
Leona Grant froze for a second, then his smile deepened.
He didn’t understand, and it seemed he didn’t want to. All he knew was that from now on, they would be strangers if they ever crossed paths again.
Leona Grant stubbornly chalked it all up to happiness arriving too suddenly.
"That’s for the best, Annabelle Linton. I’m glad you’ve come to your senses. My parents are coming back in a week, and I don’t want them to see us divorcing the moment they arrive. But once we’ve seen them, we’ll go get the divorce. After that, we’ll have nothing to do with each other."
Annabelle Linton smiled too.
’This is great. It’s really great. From now on, she would have nothing to do with him anymore.’
Watching her happy smile, Leona Grant suddenly felt like he had a fishbone stuck in his throat.
It was a sensation like a fishbone lodged in his throat—he couldn’t cough it up or swallow it down. It was awful.
But he didn’t understand why.
Annabelle Linton retrieved the divorce agreement from her room and handed it to him. "I’ve already signed it. You should sign it as soon as possible, so we can finalize the proceedings."
Leona Grant was taken aback, but for once, he nodded. "Okay."
...
Over the following week, life went on as usual, except Annabelle Linton and Leona Grant no longer spoke to each other.
Annabelle Linton still went to and from work on time every day, poring over documents for the Linton Group and throwing herself wholeheartedly into its acquisition.
Leona Grant came home occasionally, but he would just shut himself in the study to work late into the night. Sometimes he would sleep there, and other times he would leave in the middle of the night.
Annabelle Linton felt nothing. When he wasn’t there, she slept even more soundly.
She was especially delighted whenever she remembered his words: "Once we’ve seen my parents, we’ll go get the divorce. After that, we’ll have nothing to do with each other." She couldn’t stop smiling.
...
It was the weekend.
Annabelle Linton had scheduled a meeting with a director involved in the Linton Group acquisition. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
After her meeting, she was passing by the front of a shopping mall when a commotion up ahead caught her attention.
Annabelle Linton wasn’t the type to rubberneck, so she gave it a casual glance and prepared to walk on.
Just as she was about to leave, the crowd suddenly parted slightly, revealing the scene within—
Someone in a panda costume had tripped and fallen while handing out flyers.
Flyers were scattered all over the ground around him. He had landed flat on his back, and the bulky costume made it impossible for him to get up, leaving him to struggle helplessly.
