Chapter 327
When Joshua returned to the waiting room, Cain and Icarus were waiting for him, just as he had expected.
βIt was a great fight, Master,β Icarus said.
βHm.β Joshua nodded.
βWe only have a group battle left,β Icarus continued. She glanced behind Joshua.
Cazes seemed to feel her eyes and came forward and bowed.
βItβs an honor to meet you,β he said to her. βIβm Cazes Marahas, the subordinate of Captain Sanders.β
βYo-youβre too polite,β came Icarusβs surprised reply, hastily followed by a bow in return.
Just like Icarus said, Cazes was definitely too polite in some ways. A knight was considered the equal of a baronet. On top of that, the Imperial Knights, the highest knights in the Empire, were practically the same rank as barons, placing them above baronets. Despite all that, he was the first one to bow at Icarus, who was basically a commonerβ¦
Cazes smiled lightly. βYouβre Icarus-nim, arenβt you? I heard a lot about you. I feel like the moment the Captain happily talked about how he recruited a great strategist was yesterdayβ¦ but three years have already passed since then.β
βMa-master talked about me?β Icarus raised her head upon hearing an unexpected story, her eyes filled with curiosity. βWhat did he sayβ¦?β
Cazesβs smile deepened
βHe said that his strategist was very talented and was able to see the bigger picture in detail,β he kindly explained, as if he were speaking to his sister.
Icarus eagerly waited on his every word, but no matter how long she waited, Cazes didnβt say anything else.
βIs that all?β she asked, unable to hide her disappointment.
βPardon?β Cazes tilted his head.
βWell, uhβ¦ Did he talk about any other characteristicsβ¦?β Icarus was flustered for some reason.
Cazes noticed and smiled knowingly.
βThere is one natural-born swordsman in a hundred, but there is only one natural-born strategist in a ten thousand, so that title alone is extraordinary.β
βYo-youβre right. I must have put you on the spot with my useless questionβ¦β Icarus timidly said.
βAndβ¦β Cazes continued, stepping closer so he could whisper to her, βYouβre more beautiful than most women of the Empire, but you pretended to be a man, although you were really bad at it. So he was quite impressedβ¦β
βWait!β Icarusβs eyes widened. She instinctively turned her head to look at Cain.
βWhat?β Cain asked, tilting his head in confusion. βDo you have anything to say to me?
βNo-no.β When Icarus saw Cainβs reaction, she repeatedly shook her head and turned back to Cazes. βHow in the worldβ¦?β
βWhy donβt you two stop whispering between yourselves now?β Cain finally got fed up and decided that it was the right time to interrupt the two. βDo you two know each other?β
βWe donβt!β Icarus yelled with a reddened face.
βYou can just say no. Why are you yellingβ¦?β Cain turned his head to look at Cazes.βHey, why donβt we introduce ourselves?
βYouβre the Black Lion Cain de Harry, am I correct?β Cazes smiled.
βDo you know me?β Cain tilted his head in confusion.
Cazes shrugged. βWho wouldnβt know the Superhuman that is famous all around the continent?β
βWoah?β Cain exclaimed.
βOn top of that, Iβve heard a lot about you, although itβs my first time meeting you.β Cazes chuckled.
βYou mean you heard a lot from my master, right?β
βYes,β Cazes said, nodding, βthatβs correct.β
That was when Cain loosened up a bit.
βI was also quite touched when I watched the battle just now,β Cain complimented Cazes. βAlthough so many powerful figures were watching your fight, you had the guts to speak up with confidence.β
βItβs nothing compared to your accomplishments, Sir Cain.β
Feeling the confidence rising inside him, Cain slightly raised his chin.
βYou know a thing or two, huh?β
βEven a child knows that.β Cazes shrugged.
βI feel like weβll get along greatβunlike someone.β Cain glanced sideways.
Cazes noted where Cain was looking and smiled.
βItβs an honor you think of me that way.β
βButβ¦β Cain said.
Cazes waited for Cain to finish speaking.
βI know Iβm being nosy, but are you married?β
βHere he goes again.β Icarus just shook her head because she wasnβt even surprised anymore.
βI also have two children,β Cazes replied.
βOh, noβ¦β Cain smacked his lips as if he was truly sad to hear that, but he was secretly relieved. βWell, no one is perfect aside from my masterβ¦β
Cazes wasnβt sure what to say.
βThen are you living with your wife here in Arcadia?β
A bitter smile spread across Cazesβs face.
βSheβs dead.β
Cain and Icarusβs eyes widened.
βShe was born weak, and it happened shortly after she gave birth to our second childβ¦ But I didnβt get to stay by her deathbed because I was away on a long business trip,β Cazes bitterly explained.
βI-Iβm sorry for making you recall painful memoriesβ¦β Cain apologized.
Cazes shook his head. βDonβt worry. Itβs in the past.β
βPhewβ¦β Icarus had been watching their conversation and ended up sighing. βWhy did you have to ask such a questionβ¦?β
βHow about you?!β Cain snapped.
βIβm not your honey[1], Sir Cain!β
βYouβre the worst. How could you joke in a situation like this?β Cain grumbled.
Icarus crossed her arms.
βCanβt you see our master agonizing over the upcoming group battle, Sir Cain?β
βHuh?β Cain turned to the aforementioned master, but Joshua just shrugged. Cain snorted. βAgonize, my ass.β
βWhat?β
βDo you think thatβs really the right word to describe our master? Since heβs been reinstated as the Captain of the Auxiliary Battalion of the Imperial Knights, itβs safe to say that heβs already won the group battle. Even if theyβre going up against the Imperial Knights, our master will be able to take out all of them alone in thirty minutes.β
βBut still,β Icarus insisted, but she couldnβt continue.
βIβll bet on twenty minutes,β Cazes quietly said.
βThen Iβll bet on ten minutes!β Cain shouted with a wide grin.
βThereβs nothing better than wagers to get closer to somebody,β Cazes said with a little chuckle.
βShall we have a wager then?β Cain suggested.
βYouβre on,β Cazes said. βWhat will you bet?β
βI happened to have ten gold right nowβ¦ so Iβll bet all of it,β Cain proclaimed, his grin stretching even wider.
βArenβt you a bit reckless with your money just because youβre single?β Cazes joked.
βJust donβt change your mind later,β Cain warned him. βIβm not going to let you off the hook even if you beg me to return the money later because you donβt have the money to buy snacks for your babies.β
Icarus watched their conversation go on, dumbfounded.
βItβs not a simple matter!β Icarus shrieked.
ββ¦My eardrums are going to blow out,β Joshua mumbled.
βMaster!β Icarus shouted.
ββ¦Huh?β Joshua flinched as he was dragged into the crossfire.
βYou know the other princes wonβt just stay still, right?β Icarus growled with blazing eyes.
βWellβ¦β Joshua shrugged.
βTheyβll throw obstacles in our way by any means possible. Worst-case scenario, they might make your old colleagues fight against you.β
βWhy do you care what happens to those traitors?β Cain said dismissively.
βDo you still not understand our master?β Icarus glared at Cain. βHe must have a different opinion.β
Joshuaβs expression changed a bit, as if to affirm Icarusβs assertion.
Cain frowned. βNo way.β
βCaptain.β After Cain, Cazes came forward with a serious face. βThey didnβt make that choice because they wanted to.β
βWhat are you talking about?β Cain grumbled. βI know everyone does something for a reason, but their choices were surelyββ
βMost of the current members of the Auxiliary Battalion are single,β Cazes interrupted.
Cain flinched. βYou meanβ¦?β
βYes, most of them are single or lost their partners. Half of the knights that left the Battalion have wives, children, and old parents, so they have mouths to feedβand those mouths wonβt be able to survive without the knights,β Cazes bitterly continued. βIf anything happens to them, their families donβt have anyone to protect them, so their futures are obviousββ (f)reenovelkiss
βArenβt most of the Imperial Knights from prestigious noble families?β Icarus interjected. βHow bad can it beβ?β
βMost of the knights in the Auxiliary Battalion used to be wanderers, so no one comes from the prestigious noble families that youβre talking about. They were mercenaries or free knights that deserted their families for personal reasons,β Cazes explained.
βI didnβt know thatβ¦β Icarus trailed off into an awkward silence that weighed down on the room like a heavy blanket.
βHey, hey.β Cain was unable to withstand the silence and thus quickly changed the topic. βBy the way, didnβt you forget something, Icarus?β π³π«π²π²π°π²ππ§π¨ππ²π₯.ππ¨π¦
βI forgot something?β Icarus tilted her head in confusion.
βSince the man right before me is our real master, then what happened to the personβno, the bastard that was going to be our masterβs stand-in?β
βOh, yeah!β Icarus clapped after she finally recalled. βMaster, did you meet them, by the way?β
ββThemβ?β Joshua repeated.
βShe means your doppelganger and that fucking spear,β Cain explained.
ββ¦What?β Joshua flinched and visibly stiffened. βHeβs here?β
ββ¦Master?β Cain was perplexed. Joshuaβs uncharacteristic nervousness contrasted worryingly with his usual unflappable composure.
βNo, no wayβ¦β Joshua mumbled.
Cain stayed silent.
βCain,β Joshua called.
βYe-yes, sir?β Cain replied.
βWhere did he go?β
βAc-actuallyβ¦β Cain stuttered, βI asked because I also donβt knowβ¦β
Joshua shut his mouth and began to think. If Cain was right about him being here, then Joshua had an idea about his location, because there was only one location he would go to in the Avalon Empire.
βWe took different routesβno, he must have moved beforehand since he could sense me, thenβ¦β Joshua narrowed his eyes.
At that moment, someone loudly shouted from the outside of the waiting room, bringing Joshua back to reality.
βMr. Joshua Sanders! You have been ordered by the Emperor to come to the first-class seat of the colosseum before the group battle starts!β
βIs itβ¦?β Icarus tensed up when the event she had expected actually came true.
βWhy would he say it's an order from the Emperor when there isnβt one right now?β Cain pouted.
βLetβs go.β Joshua headed to the door without hesitation.
Cain hesitated for a moment.
βMaster, wouldnβt it be better to summon the other knights of the Auxiliary Battalion and say hiβ¦?!β
βI think the same,β Cazes chimed in. βTheyβll come running if you summon them right now. Since we donβt know what kind of schemes the princes are up to, it would be better to move after you meet the knightsββ
βNo, I donβt have the time.β Joshua even looked anxious, so Cazes no longer said anything. βCain.β
βYes, master,β Cain replied.
βIs it okay if I join in on the wager you guys talked about?β Joshua asked out of the blue.
Cain gaped. ββ¦Pardon? When you talk about wager, you meanβ¦?β
βOne minute,β Joshua said.
Cain boggled at him.
βIβll make all the knights and other Captains that attack me kneel within a minute. If I win, I want you to do me a favor without complaining,β Joshua told Cain.
Then he immediately exited the room.
Icarus, Cain, and Cazes gaped at the door that Joshua had gone through, dumbfounded.
βDid he say βone minuteββ¦?β they mumbled.
