Side Story Chapter 91

After the avalanche in northern Avalon and the Emperor of Avalon officially declaring his return, Carmen secretly returned to Arcadia with a few select people. Carmen knew that Joshua wasnโ€™t in his real body as she had seen the real one herself. She had heard from the demon that destroying Joshuaโ€™s fake body could significantly damage his real one. In addition, she had another reason to come to Arcadia in spite of the risk.

โ€œWelcome, true head of the Ducal Family of Agnus.โ€œ

Carmen looked ahead and saw a man shrouded in a black robe similarly to herself. Another thing she immediately noticed was the reek of blood.

โ€œโ€ฆDid you murder someone?โ€ Carmen asked.

โ€œI had traitors to take care of.โ€

Carmen clenched her jaw shut. At least twenty corpses were scattered around the area, and judging from how fresh the smell of blood was, it hadnโ€™t been long since they died.

โ€œAre you the type who takes action before thinking it through, Battle God?โ€ Carmen narrowed her eyes.

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re right in front of the Palace. I know that the people in the Palace are busy tending to their guests, but you committed multiple murders right in the center of Arcadia.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry. I found a good item, so Iโ€™m not going to leave any traces behind,โ€ the man answered.

โ€œA good itemโ€ฆ? fr(e)ewebn(o)vel

Before Carmen could finish asking again, the man searched a corpse and pulled out a glass bottle filled with transparent liquid.

โ€œWhat is that?โ€ Carmen inquired.

The man shrugged. โ€œThe only thing I know is that this is the colorless, odorless poison made by the Poison King himself. The slightest contact will make you melt without leaving so much as a drop of blood behind.โ€

โ€œThe P-Poison King?โ€ Carmen's eyes widened. That corpse was the Poison King? Unbelievable! โ€œYou killed the Poison Kingโ€ฆ? Then are theyโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œFrom what I remember, theyโ€™re assassins from a quite famous guild named Hashashin.โ€

The Hashashin Guild wasnโ€™t just โ€œquiteโ€ famousโ€”it was one of the Three Assassin Guilds for a reason.

โ€œWhy did you kill them?โ€ Carmen asked.

โ€œThey dared to betray me. When the Emperor of Avalon showed a little bit of his power, they joined his side without a second thought.โ€

โ€œMmmโ€ฆโ€ Carmen grunted.

โ€œI do hope you wonโ€™t betray me as well.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIt wonโ€™t happen unless our circumstances change.โ€

โ€œYes, we promised that youโ€™ll retake this country and Iโ€™ll devour this continent. Of course, youโ€™ll have to become my concubine.โ€ The man grinned.

Carmenโ€™s eyebrow rose slightly, but it was planned. She wasnโ€™t an idiot who couldnโ€™t control her emotions in times like this.

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™ll keep my promise, so you should keep your promise too,โ€ Carmen quietly answered.

โ€œGood. If you help me, Iโ€™ll try my best to kill the Martial God, butโ€ฆโ€

Their first meeting was about to conclude without issue, right until the man released a faint murderous energy.

โ€œWhy is your tone authoritative?โ€ the man demanded. โ€œIf you want to receive the slightest bit of your dear husbandโ€™s affection, I think it would be wise to change your toneโ€ฆโ€

โ€œUghโ€ฆโ€ Despite the fury boiling up from deep within her, Carmen had to nod. โ€œ...Iโ€™ll be careful.โ€

* * *

โ€œHmmmโ€ฆ?โ€ Joshua frowned.

Cainโ€™s attention turned from the arena to Joshua and he tilted his head. โ€œIs there a problem?โ€

โ€œ...The mana link of the oath has been broken.โ€

โ€œYou meanโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThe Poison King is dead,โ€ Joshua said.

Cain flinched, but his eyes were still glued to the arena; the battle taking place in the arena was very intriguing. It was very interesting to watch Kireua Sanders, the Second Prince of the Avalon Empire and the son of Cainโ€™s master, improving himself, but it was hard to disregard the Poison Kingโ€™s death.

โ€œHeโ€™s the weakest among the Twelve Superhumans, butโ€ฆ he really died?โ€ Cainโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œIf such a man got into a battle near the Palace, we would have noticed it.โ€

โ€œThen thereโ€™s only one answer.โ€

โ€œPardon?โ€

โ€œHe died before he could do anythingโ€”he went up against someone overwhelmingly more powerful.โ€

Cain closed his mouth.

Meanwhile, a colossal fire dragon was charging toward Kireua, but the ebon flame that Cain had seen before engulfed the fire dragon.

โ€œHeโ€™s gotten better than the last time I met him. I guess he was affected by you, Your Majesty.โ€ Cain commented.

โ€œI didnโ€™t really do anything. Itโ€™s all his own efforts.โ€

โ€œIs that so? Then what would have happened if His Highness Kireua went up against the Poison King?โ€

Joshua glanced at the neck to neck battle. Kireuaโ€™s opponent was named Duke Uraxen of the Tetra Kingdom? The opponent was a Class A Knight and Class 6 mage, and yet, Kireua never retreatedโ€”in fact, he was actually driving his opponent into a corner. His opponent was thrown off and made a lot of mistakes when the authority of Greed swallowed the fire dragon.

Joshua nodded. โ€œSupposing that Kireua could control that power of Greed well, he would have been able to fight the Poison King on equal ground.โ€

โ€œRemarkable. His Highness is just over twenty, but itโ€™ll only take three years for him to catch up with one of the Superhumans, the strongest people on the continent after the Nine Stars.โ€

โ€œOf course he can. Heโ€™s my son. I did that, too.โ€

โ€œThen how is he compared to the mysterious man who killed the Poison King?โ€ Cain asked.

Joshua couldnโ€™t answer so easily this time. Although he did have an idea of who was responsible since he had asked the Poison King to keep an eye on Hubaltโ€™s delegation, it wasnโ€™t the Four Paladins. Joshua hadnโ€™t met any of them, but the men in white who smelled thickly of the Four Great Angels were watching the battle from the corner of the arena.

โ€œItโ€™s probably the Martial Emperorโ€™s heir, right?โ€ Cain asked.

โ€œThat is what I think, too.โ€

โ€œA student who is better than their teacherโ€ฆ I know itโ€™s said that the pigment from dyerโ€™s knotweed is bluer than the actual plant[ref] Itโ€™s a Japanese idiom that is similar to the English saying, โ€œThe student becomes the master.โ€/ref], but the princesโ€™ potential enemies are all monsters.โ€

It wasnโ€™t just the Martial Emperorโ€™s student. Carmen von Agnus was the Dark Godโ€™s heir; the Four Paladins still hadnโ€™t revealed the extent of their power; and the demons with the Evil Sinsโ€™ powers were presumed to be hunting the Demon Spiritโ€™s last spirit fragment. On top of that, there were too many things to be done. The civil war had to be ended, the continent needed to be stabilized, and the Demon Spirit must be exterminated for good.

โ€œYouโ€™ll really recover fully within one year, yes?โ€ Cain turned to look at Joshua.

โ€œWhy? Are my children not reliable?โ€

โ€œWell, the enemies are too formidableโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLook over there.โ€ Joshua pointed downward.

Kireua had nullified all Duke Uraxenโ€™s magic spells using his ebon flame and was now charging toward his opponent. Despite the fact that Uraxen basically lost one of his weapons, he had regained his composure.

The fight was now going to be based purely on swordsmanship, and yet, Uraxen was certain that he was never going to lose. Uraxen was several times older than Kireua, allowing him to accumulate far more experience and reach a much greater level of sword mastery.

โ€œโ€ฆYour Highness!โ€ Cain could see Kireuaโ€™s every move. Kireua was already a mess. Judging from the scorch marks all over his clothes, it looked like he hadnโ€™t managed to dodge or nullify all of the fire magic. In addition, his left shoulder was frozen up to his collarbone, although fortunately that was not the side he was using to hold his sword.

Duke Uraxen wielded the Fire Dragon Kingโ€™s authority and was also a Class 6 magic swordsman who could use advanced ice magic spells, butโ€ฆ Kireua came at him again and again. He might have stumbled from time to time, but he kept on advancing.

โ€œI am Kireua Sanders, the son of the Martial God!โ€

โ€œWoaaahhhhhh!โ€

The spectators cheered at Kireuaโ€™s fighting spirit, and the young knightsโ€™ fists clenched.

โ€œThatโ€™s right! Youโ€™re His Majestyโ€™s son!โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the pride of Avalon! Win this fight!โ€

โ€œWho in the world called His Highness Kireua a halfwit? Come outโ€”Iโ€™ll break your jaws so you canโ€™t say something like that again.โ€

Cain quietly grinned. The battle looked like it was evenly matched right now, but the balance would shift. Although it was a tiny difference, Kireua was definitely overpowering his opponent.

โ€œIt looks like itโ€™s about to end, so shall we go?โ€ Joshua asked.

โ€œGo where?โ€ Cian asked, surprised.

โ€œA potential problem is roaming around the Palace, so I should meet him, shouldnโ€™t I? My plan to sound them out using the Poison King failed, too.โ€

โ€œA-Are you talking about the Martial Emperorโ€™s student?โ€

Joshua nodded. Cain placed himself in Joshuaโ€™s way, shaking his head.

โ€œNo, I canโ€™t let you do that. Iโ€™ll meet him alone.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œYou arenโ€™t in good condition.โ€

โ€œI told you this isnโ€™t my body.โ€

โ€œNevertheless, enough damage will harm your soul. Justโ€ฆ Donโ€™t do anything dangerous for a year.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAh, what a bother.โ€ Joshua let out a quiet sigh. โ€œDid I tell you too much?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no need to do that. I came to you myself.โ€

Joshua and Cain froze, processing the mana-laced voice.

Cainโ€™s head whipped around. โ€œWh-Whenโ€ฆ?โ€

His voice automatically trembled.

Joshua and Cain were standing on the rooftop of the main Palace, which had the best view of the arena. On the other hand, the mystery man was standing on the outer Palaceโ€™s rooftop, which was on the opposite side of the Palace, and yet he was looking exactly at Joshua and Cain. They were at least hundreds of meters away from each other, but that didnโ€™t seem to be a problem for the man. On top of that, the two didnโ€™t notice his presence until the man spoke to them first.

Joshua nodded. โ€œHeโ€™s better than I thought.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYour Majesty, I donโ€™t think this is the time for you to marvel at the man,โ€ Cain cautioned, his hand automatically grabbing his sword.

The man was a monster. Cain had lived for a long time, but this man gave off a feeling that Cain had felt only three times in his lifetimeโ€”four, including this time. The first was when Cain had first met Duke Agnus, the Dark God; the second was during Cainโ€™s first encounter with Joshua; and the third time was decades later. That was during his lessons for Selim Sanders, the First Prince and Joshuaโ€™s son.

โ€œโ€ฆYour Majesty, it looks like the fight against Hubalt might be more difficult than we originally anticipated,โ€ Cain muttered.

โ€œWell, wait here for a moment since it looks like his business is with me,โ€ Joshua said, jumping down the roof before Cain could stop him.

โ€œY-Your Majesty!โ€

The mysterious man on the roof also disappeared as if he had been waiting for Joshua to do that.
