Chapter 133: Seeing the baby

The next day...

At nine in the morning, Damian’s condition was improving enough that he no longer needed respiratory assistance. He could sit up, but still couldn’t move around much for the next few days. He was sitting comfortably in a wheelchair on the hospital terrace, watching the garden where other patients were enjoying the fresh air.

"Daddy," Daniel said from his toddler stroller, while his mother sat beside him.

"I’m sorry, sweetheart. I can’t play with you," Damian replied with a faint smile.

"He’ll understand," Valerie chimed in, stroking Daniel’s thick and dark brown hair. "Sweetheart, Daddy is sick. He can’t hold you, or you can’t sit on his lap because his stomach still hurts," she continued.

Daniel fell silent, furrowing his brow, focusing on his father who still had an IV in his hand with a tube hanging from the wheelchair.

"Did Uncle Samuel hit him again?" he asked.

Valerie furrowed her brow. "Why would you think that?"

"Maybe because the last time someone hurt us was Samuel," Damian said.

Valerie fell silent, feeling suspicious of Samuel because he was the only enemy of Damian who had ever harmed him physically.

’I know Karina is cunning, but she never intended to harm anyone physically. Her crimes aren’t about physical harm... Only Samuel has the potential to physically harm Damian, even though he didn’t hesitate to harm me and Daniel at that time,’ she thought anxiously. ’But could he be the culprit? He’s in jail, and his family doesn’t care about him anymore.’

"Mama..." Daniel turned to his mother. "I want milk!"

"Umm..." Valerie swallowed nervously, realizing she couldn’t breastfeed Daniel anymore because she was pregnant. She stood up and looked at Daniel’s babysitter, Fanny, sitting on another chair nearby, then called her over.

"Fanny..."

Fanny, who looked simply beautiful in her blue outfit, immediately approached Valerie while carrying a medium-sized red bag.

"Yes, ma’am."

"Give him the milk," Valerie said.

"Ugh, wait..."

Fanny quickly took out a bottle of milk from the bag and gave it to Daniel, while Valerie could only watch with pity.

Suddenly, tears welled up in her eyes, remembering every moment of nursing her son, and now she couldn’t anymore, making her feel like there was a distance between them.

"Why are you crying?" Damian asked.

Valerie shook her head and wiped her tears. "It’s nothing... I just didn’t expect that he wouldn’t drink milk from me anymore," she said with a faint smile.

"Mommy is mean!" Daniel exclaimed with a pout, then drank the milk again.

Valerie felt even sadder.

"Sweetheart, mommy is not mean," Damian said patiently.

"But she didn’t give me milk!"

"Well... That’s true. But that doesn’t mean she’s mean... She’s giving you what you want the most." Damian smiled faintly, watching Daniel drink the milk again but still looking upset. "Do you want to know?"

Daniel remained silent, while Fanny sat next to Valerie but slightly apart, bordering on the bag containing all of Daniel’s belongings.

"You should know... There’s a baby in mommy’s belly," Damian said.

Daniel immediately stopped drinking milk and stared at his mother.

Damian chuckled.

Valerie smiled shyly, then pushed the stroller closer to Daniel again.

"You’re going to be a big brother," Damian said.

Daniel immediately looked at his mother’s belly, still tight and covered by a red dress with open sleeves.

"But where’s the baby?" he asked in amazement.

"In Mommy’s belly... We can’t see it yet except with the machine the doctor has here," Valerie answered with a smile.

"Ugh! I want to see it!"

"You can see it later, sweetheart," Damian said.

"I want to see it now!" Daniel exclaimed, his face turning angry again.

Valerie sighed, looking at Daniel with frustration, as it ended up making things difficult for her.

"Daddy, I want to see the baby!" Daniel pleaded, looking at Damian with pleading eyes.

"Alright, we’ll see it..."

"But, Honey..." Valerie looked at Damian anxiously. "We have to wait for the doctor’s appointment, and you have to go back to your room."

"It’s okay, I’ll accompany you, and besides, this is very important for you. Since yesterday, we only knew you were pregnant through a pregnancy test, and we haven’t done any ultrasound yet... We need to make sure the fetus is okay, and maybe we’ll know how far along you are," Damian said, his eyes reassuring.

Reluctantly, Valerie stood up and then led Damian to the obstetrician’s office, followed by Fanny and Daniel.

After waiting in line for almost 15 minutes, Valerie finally got her turn for a prenatal examination by the obstetrician. Damian accompanied her with Fanny and Daniel.

The woman lay on the examination bed, and the doctor immediately checked her blood pressure, then placed a blanket over her body up to her lower abdomen and lifted her dress so her belly was visible.

"So, is this your first examination?" the obstetrician asked, let’s call him Dr. Joe.

"Yes, Doc. Yesterday I only did tests using some testing equipment, and most of the results were positive. I haven’t had a chance to undergo a more in-depth examination because my husband is sick," Valerie explained, glancing awkwardly at Damian, who looked tense.

Dr. Joe immediately glanced at Damian, who looked slightly pale in his bluish-white patient gown.

"Okay, I understand," he said.

"I wanna see my baby sister!" Daniel exclaimed with his high-pitched voice.

"Oh, so you want a baby sister?" Dr. Joe asked, placing gel on Valerie’s stomach, and then flattening it with his left hand. "Maybe you’ll have a baby sister... But if it’s a baby boy, that’s not a bad thing either."

"Yeah... I’ll take her to the playground... I have dolls and robots!" Daniel replied.

"That’s good... You having preparations to welcome your sibling." Dr. Joe chuckled, then placed a device on Valerie’s stomach, which was connected to a large monitor mounted on the wall.

Damian and the others looked up at the monitor, slowly showing the conditions inside the womb, which looked unclear and in black and white and gray, but it was clear that there was a small object there.

"I think it’s about 16 weeks old," Dr. Joe said.

"Really?" Valerie blinked.

"Uh-huh..." Dr. Joe nodded, continuing to look at the monitor. "From its size and shape, it’s pretty clear that it’s about 16 weeks old."

"That means I was pregnant before we got married." Valerie looked at Damian anxiously.

"Sometimes pregnancy comes without us realizing it, but the most important thing now is that you know, and your baby’s condition is quite healthy," Dr. Joe explained casually.

Daniel shook his head with a disappointed look.

"I can’t play with a baby that small!" he said bluntly. "It’s probably as big as a tiny corn!"

Valerie laughed, as did the others.

"You don’t need to worry, Boy... Your baby sister will grow big inside your mother’s belly. Then they will be born like any other baby, and you can play with them after a few months," Dr. Joe explained while wiping Valerie’s belly with a tissue.

"Huh..." Daniel immediately slouched as if lying in the stroller and crossed his arms with a pout. "That means I have to wait. I don’t like waiting."

Damian tried to calm Daniel down, but it wasn’t successful until he asked Fanny to just take him home with the driver.

Valerie finished her examination and also received education from Dr. Joe, getting a pregnancy journal and vitamins or anti-nausea medication. After that, she takes Damian to return to the VIP ward room, helping him to lie down on the bed very carefully.

"Next time we won’t do prenatal check-ups here again," she said with a worried look.

"Why?" Valerie asked, putting her bag on the table near the couch.

"I don’t like male doctors... I don’t like my wife being touched by other men," Damian answered with a frown.

Valerie immediately laughed and approached Damian.

"Even with doctors, you feel jealous."

"You are mine!" Damian whispered with a serious look, then reached for Valerie’s hand and held it. "You know this is the most difficult time in my life after we got back together... I can’t do anything to you... I can’t kiss you unless you kiss me first... I can’t hug you... And the worst part is we can’t make love," he said with a sad look.

Valerie smiled, then leaned down to softly kiss Damian’s lips, giving him a warm hug, then ended up sitting next to him leaning on two pillows.

"Stay here," Damian whispered, placing Valerie’s hand on his chest. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

"Now you can sleep..."

"I can’t..."

"What are you thinking?"

Damian sighed, remained silent, and remembered the moment he argued with a stranger and got attacked.

"Do you think what happened yesterday was a setup?" he asked. "Was it Karina’s doing or Samuel’s intention to harm me but making it seem like I was attacked by someone else I don’t even know?"

"To be honest, I doubt Karina because no matter how evil she is, she never physically hurt us," Valerie answered. And suddenly remembered Samuel who almost locked her up in the basement with Daniel. "But Samuel could do that... He’s a cruel person even though he used to love me and Daniel, but when he kidnapped us, he was very rough with us... And eventually hurt you," she continued.

Damian furrowed his brows.

"So you think it was Samuel?"

"Maybe."

"But he’s in prison..."

"Maybe he instructed someone who visited him... Sometimes prisoners can still commit crimes... And maybe he could do that." Valerie speculated, suddenly curious about Samuel’s current condition. "I think I want to see him in the prison ..."
