Chapter 168: Tristan and Karina’s sadness

Damian had just arrived at the mansion after picking up Daniel and inviting him to eat out, of course, along with Valerie. He stepped out of the car and promptly opened the door for his wife, then opened the passenger seat door and helped Daniel out after unbuckling his seatbelt.

"Tristan?"

Valerie furrowed her brow as she saw Tristan standing on the porch, now walking toward her.

"Valerie ... Damian, I need your help!" Tristan said anxiously, his eyes showing sadness.

"What’s wrong?" Damian asked, concerned.

"Suddenly, Samuel came to the apartment with a policeman... He called the police to arrest Karina because he couldn’t accept that Karina remains free after causing the death of his baby," Tristan explained. "I’ve shown the evidence that Hannah and both of you have already agreed to let Karina free, but he and the policeman said that the evidence is invalid because he wasn’t involved in the agreement. He wants Karina punished!"

"Oh my God..." Valerie sighed, clutching her swollen belly, imagining heavily pregnant Karina having to be in prison.

Tristan shook his head anxiously.

"I can’t just stand by now... Please help me free Karina. I want her released today, I can’t bear the thought of her sleeping in jail... She’s heavily pregnant!" he cried out.

"Wait," Damian exclaimed, then pulled out his phone from his pocket and tried to contact Samuel.

Tristan stood silently, watching Damian repeatedly try to reach someone without any response.

"Damn, his number’s not active!" Damian exclaimed angrily.

"Oh God, what should we do? I really can’t let Karina stay in jail!" Tristan became more panicked.

"You should hire a lawyer to go to the police station to request a leniency, such as house arrest," Damian suggested worriedly. "But that usually takes time... And honestly, the easiest way is to get Samuel to withdraw his report..."

"But his number’s not active," Valerie said worriedly.

"Let’s go to his house, I beg you... Help me persuade him to free Karina!" Tristan pleaded with a sad look.

Damian nodded.

"Alright, we’ll find him now," he said, then approached Valerie. "Honey... I have to go. Take care," he continued, then kissed her briefly on the lips.

Valerie nodded.

"Be careful..."

"Use my car," Tristan said, approaching his vehicle.

Damian nodded, then immediately got into Tristan’s car while Valerie stood quietly with Daniel, letting them leave.

"Mom, are we in trouble again?" Daniel asked.

"No, dear," Valerie replied with a smile, looking down at Daniel. "Everything will be alright. Now, let’s go inside, you need to rest, and take a nap," she continued, extending her hand to Daniel.

Daniel started walking instead.

"I don’t want to be carried... I don’t want to squish my sibling!" he exclaimed.

Valerie chuckled, feeling amused and touched by Daniel’s mature attitude, acting like an older brother. She walked into the mansion, meeting Hannah and Hans who seemed to be about to leave.

"Hey... Are you going somewhere?"

"Yes, we... We want to go out until the evening maybe," Hans said nervously.

Valerie furrowed her brow, recalling Damian mentioning Hans’s intention to propose to Hannah.

"Valerie, I really can’t stay calm here, I need a change of scenery for just a day," Hannah said anxiously. "What happened today disgusts me!"

"I understand..." Valerie nodded and then remembered about Samuel. "But, did you tell Samuel about this? I mean... Um, does he know that Karina is to blame?"

"I didn’t tell him..." Hannah shook her head. "I’m sure if he knew, he would cause new problems. And that’s very annoying!"

"Oh..." Valerie nodded, but inside she thought, ’But now he already knows... he’s even causing new problems.’

"Ma’am," Hans said with an awkward look. "We have to go now."

"Oh, sure!"

Valerie nodded with an enthusiastic smile, letting them leave. She continued walking inside, helping Daniel change his clothes.

...

In the detention cell, Karina sat with her legs stretched out because if she curled up, it would press on her big belly. She glanced around, feeling disgusted by the ugly walls with peeling paint, even the floor looked dirty, not to mention the two women there who also looked dirty as if they hadn’t bathed for days. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

’Oh God, will I end up like them? Dirty, smelly, and... Helpless.’ she looked at her beautiful, shiny red nails. ’I don’t want to become ugly... I don’t want to stay here forever... What if I need to go to the toilet at night? What if I get hungry in the middle of the night?’

She remembered her routine since becoming heavily pregnant, peeing at night, and suddenly feeling hungry and craving delicious food.

"Ugh..." She exhaled roughly, feeling stifled and cramped.

"How many months along are you?" asked another prisoner, a blonde woman who looked to be in her thirties.

"Um... Almost seven months," Karina answered nervously.

"What got you imprisoned?"

Karina swallowed, lacking the courage to answer.

"Did you steal? Or kill?" the woman asked again, looking puzzled.

"She looks elegant and her skin is very clean... I think she’s rich, and she can’t be a thief," said the other woman, who had natural black hair and looked younger than the previous woman. "Did you commit a crime by hiring someone with your money?"

Karina slowly nodded.

"Oh my God..." the blonde woman exhaled roughly. "Why did you do that? I thought your life was perfect... Judging by your clothes and your face, even now you’re pregnant. Or was your target the father of the baby? Do you hate him?" she speculated.

Karina just shook her head, looking down, not wanting to face them.

"You’re making us curious," the black-haired woman said. "But whatever crime you committed, it’s a mistake... And you’ll be scared after this. The punishment you’ll get isn’t just for yourself, it’s like karma..."

Karina furrowed her brow, glancing at the black-haired inmate in the right corner, about 3 meters away from her.

"Sometimes God doesn’t punish you by hurting you but by making you suffer by hurting the people you love... And your position now is that you’re pregnant," the black-haired woman said, pointing to Karina’s belly. "Aren’t you afraid God will punish you by hurting your child?"

Karina’s heart started pounding.

"Karma is real, even though I don’t believe in God. It’s like you reap what you sow," the black-haired woman said again.

The blonde woman immediately nudged her with her elbow.

"Don’t scare her, it can make her uncomfortable, not good for the baby!" she whispered angrily.

"I’m just telling her!"

"What you’re saying is completely untrue... Don’t provoke her, don’t mess with her mind. You’re scaring her so much!"

Karina remained silent in fear, not caring about the two female inmates debating about her. She glanced at her big belly and then held it.

’Baby girl... I hope you don’t suffer because of me... I hope the crime I committed doesn’t affect you badly,’ she thought, her eyes welling up. ’You’re innocent... You shouldn’t feel this. You must be very uncomfortable now... You need nutrition from me...’

"Hey..." The blonde woman approached Karina and touched her shoulder.

"Are you okay? Do you feel pain or..."

Karina shook her head before the blonde woman finished her question.

"I’m okay..."

"You should lie down... I know pregnant women can’t sit too long, especially on a hard floor like this," the blonde woman said, standing up and then taking a rolled carpet, bringing it closer to Karina again.

She unrolled the carpet, spreading it on the floor about two meters long. Then she took a small pillow from the corner that was available with a blanket and a bag.

"You need to rest, use this," she said after placing the pillow on the carpet.

Karina looked at the blonde woman’s face with surprise.

"Why are you doing this for me?"

"Because I know you need it!"

"Then what about you?"

"I can sleep on the floor, I’m even used to living in hardship, sleeping on the floor, struggling to eat... That’s why I became a robber," the blonde woman said casually. "Now, get some rest..."

Karina glanced at the carpet and the pillow that looked dirty, feeling hesitant to rest there but she was really tired and worried about offending the blonde woman if she refused.

"Come on...."

"Okay..."

Karina crawled onto the carpet and then lay on her side, although it didn’t make her body feel comfortable.

"Isn’t that better?" the blonde woman asked.

"Yes... This is better." Karina smiled faintly.

"I know this is far from your bed, from your life... I hope you won’t stay here long..."

"My husband is trying to free me."

"I hope he succeeds."

Karina nodded, while the blonde woman returned to sit beside the black-haired woman. Now she thought about Tristan again, worrying about him, also hoping that he succeeded in getting Damian’s help to persuade Samuel to release her.
