Rise of The Demon General-Chapter 738. Kind Sir
Wi Zhuang was an enforcer inside Yao Ai’s Faction. He had been a member of the faction for over seven decades by now, starting from the role of a grunt. He worked his way up to the enforcer rank through many difficulties. He never minded the extent of time he had spent to rise in rank. He believed in a slow and steady improvement.
Unfortunately, fate dictated otherwise. As an enforcer with no exceptional achievements, he could be said to be the last person to draw the attention of the domain lord. Yet, during a freak accident, he did.
He still remembered how nervous he was when Yao Ai addressed him. There had been stories about his superiors who had uttered the wrong words in conversation with Yao Ai, and those superiors had been resigned, permanently. He didn’t want to suffer the same fate.
He tried to sound as assured as possible, because he had heard that Yao Ai valued confidence. He also tried to be as polite and as respectful as possible. Yao Ai didn’t ask him difficult questions, so he thought he would be fine. However, things took a turn after Yao Ai asked him his rank and how long he had been in service.
Yao Ai said that she liked him, so she would give him a chance. If he could prove his worth, he would be promoted to a slayer. In the lower realm, all the formal factions of the three domains followed the same ranking systems. The lowest rank was grunt, followed by raider, enforcer, slayer, warlord, and the highest rank was dictator.
A dictator was akin to the domain lord’s advisor. Only one person held the rank.
Yao Ai told Wi Zhuang that she had heard a report about an increase in bandit activity in the eastern part of her domain. The bandit had brazenly built a base there. She tasked Wi Zhuang to eradicate this bandit group. Wi Zhuang at first thought this was his chance to rise, but later learned that it was a misfortune in disguise, because if he failed the task, he would be thrown into the gladiator arena to fight to the death for the public’s entertainment. He was also given a short time limit to complete the task.
To make matters worse, he soon learned that his target was larger than the average bandit group. Not only that, but the bandit leader was also a cultivator at the Intermediate Fiendish Stage of the Monster Realm. He was a Peak Malicious Stage cultivator. He had no hope of winning unless he brought a much bigger force than the bandit. Yet, his superior told him that he may only bring his personal unit. It didn’t matter even when he said this was a task requested directly by the domain lord.
Hence, he had no choice but to proceed with the mission with only a hundred soldiers under his command. To preserve his fighting force, he chose guerrilla warfare and hit the bandits when they were out roaming in small groups. However, an unfortunate incident threw him into a battle against a large enemy group. After a long fight, he had lost half his unit, and victory was still not evident.
"Brother!"
Wi Zhuang turned to a woman who fought by his side. That woman was Wi Yin, his sister. She was pointing at the sky. Wi Zhuang looked where she pointed and saw another group of people approaching.
"Shit!" He cursed. From the look of it, the incoming group was friends of the bandits he was fighting.
As if to confirm his suspicion, one of the people from the incoming group addressed one of the bandits whom his soldiers were fighting.
"Yo, Brother Xong Lao, I heard you brought many people out of the base for a hunt. I didn’t expect you to be hunting the demon queen’s soldiers."
"Brother Xu Bang!" Xong Lao exclaimed. His voice sounded relieved. "It’s good that you are here. Come! Help me with this prey."
"Trying to hoard the merits and getting more than you can chew, aren’t you? Serve you right. Maybe I should just leave you here and come back later after you and these soldiers murder each other."
"Brother Xu Bang, please don’t be like that! I will share the loots and merits with you. Help me!" Xong Lao pleaded.
"Sigh. Very well. What can I say? I’m a reliable and loyal brother. Can’t leave a fellow brother in need, can I? I will hold you to your promise about the loot-sharing."
"Certainly, certainly!" Xong Lao exclaimed.
While Xong Lao was glad that Xu Bang was willing to help. Wi Zhuang was the opposite. He had hoped that the competition between these two bandits would allow him to deal with the ones here first before dealing with the reinforcement. It appeared he was not that fortunate.
"Alright, boys," Xu Bang uttered. "Let’s save our brothers!"
When Xu Bang’s followers were about to rush ahead, they sensed something from behind. They looked back and saw many tiny dark darts flying toward them at high speed. They hurriedly either moved away to dodge, lifted their weapons to block, or used their defensive arts.
Those who used their weapons and defensive arts soon learned that it was a mistake. The dark darts easily cut through their weapons and pierced their defensive arts. After the darts landed, they discovered the darts were small knives. The darkness shrouding the darts spread near the points of impact and eroded their flesh.
The darts not only targeted the bandits, but they also hit the black birds they were riding. Many bandits dropped to the ground with their ride.
Xu Bang was shocked. In just an instant, he lost half of his men. He looked at the one responsible. It was a human shrouded in shadows riding a firebird. He didn’t recognize the shadowy human, but he recognized the firebird. It was the prey they had been chasing before they spotted Xong Lao’s group.
"Who are you?" Xu Bang demanded.
The man in shadows didn’t answer. He simply charged forward. The firebird supported him by firing several fireballs from its beak.
Wi Zhuang was confused. Why did a third party suddenly attack the bandits? But he wouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. He didn’t know if this third party was an enemy or an ally. For now, the third party was fighting the bandits, so he ordered his soldiers not to attack the shadowy man and the firebird.
"Brother, something is off with that shadowy creature," Wi Yin came to him. "It is emitting the energy of the divine cultivation, yet it is using an infernal element. Is it a cultivator or a spirit beast?"
"We will sort that out later. As long as it doesn’t attack us, we must refrain from antagonizing it," Wi Zhuang ordered.
Amon made short work of the reinforcement bandits. The Elder God Veil gave him the power to fight a Beginning Lord Stage cultivator when he was still at the Intermediate Spirit Stage. He was at the Peak Spirit Stage now.
Xu Bang’s men were all Diabolic Stage cultivators, which was equivalent to divine cultivation’s Mystic Stage. As for Xu Bang, he was an Intermediate Malicious Stage cultivator, which was the counterpart to the Spirit Stage.
Amon used the black sword power of his ceremonial dagger. The black sword effortlessly cut through the bandits’ defense. No one could withstand his slashes. Within a short time, he arrived before Xu Bang.
"What are you?!" Xu Bang exclaimed. Though he tried to act tough by swinging his axe at Amon, his voice was filled with fear.
Amon zoomed past him, splitting him in two.
"Ru–Run...!" Xong Lao told his men. The shadowy creature managed to slay Xu Bang and his people in such a short time. Xu Bang had the same cultivation level as he did. He didn’t want to face the shadowy creature. He disengaged from the battle and began running. He didn’t care if his followers were still trapped. His priority was to save himself.
Before he could get far, a dark tentacle burst out of the air before him. It tried to move away, but it grabbed his legs. He soon screamed in agony as he felt his legs getting eroded.
Amon threw another barrage of darkness-shrouded flying knives. These knives targeted the fleeing bandits. None managed to escape.
The remaining bandits, who could not flee because Wi Zhuang’s soldiers surrounded them, stopped fighting and surrendered.
After the battle ended, Wi Zhuang looked at the shadowy creature with wariness.
Amon and the Great Sun Hawk landed beside Xong Lao, who was whimpering on the ground after losing his legs. He deactivated his Elder God Veil and revealed himself.
Seeing that the shadowy creature was a person and showed no aggression toward them, Wi Zhuang came forward.
"I thank you for your assistance, kind sir. The mercy faction owed you gratitude."
Amon smiled. His deed was not wasted. These people were indeed Yao Ai’s minions.
Amon gave Wi Zhuang a saluting gesture. "Don’t mention it. I have always admired the Mercy Faction and Mistress Yao Ai. To get the chance to assist her faction is an honor. I have witnessed these bandits come from an encampment not far from here. That should be their base. Do you probably have any intention of routing them?"
"That is our intention," Wi Zhuang answered, before letting out a long sigh. "Unfortunately, I don’t have enough manpower for the task."
"Can’t you request reinforcement from your faction?" Amon asked.
Wi Zhuang shook his head sadly. "The task falls solely on me. I either complete it myself or die trying."
Amon’s mouth twitched into a grin.
