Roadmap to the Boundless Sky-Chapter 77Book 3, : Intercept
“The company assigned that security team to Mr. Zhao. Why can’t we bring them with us? If anything were to happen to Mr. Zhao, the consequences would be severe,” the assistant tried his best to argue.
But Peregrine Falcon remained unmoved. In a cold voice, he said mercilessly, “That’s true in Central City, but we’re on an escort mission right now, and all personnel are part of the escort team’s defensive power, even Mr. Zhao himself. I’m only allowing him to go back because he’s feeling unwell right now.
“If he thinks that my decision isn’t appropriate to the situation, he’s welcome to complain about it to the headquarters via telegram. As long as the headquarters agrees to let his security team leave with him, I will not disagree.”
Zhao Qian extended his hand to stop his assistant from arguing any further. Telegram exchanges wasted a lot of time, and his condition was getting worse. He could not delay the treatment and needed to go back as soon as possible. In any case, he had Chi Duan, so they should be able to handle most situations.
The assistant understood what he was trying to say and swallowed all his displeasure toward Peregrine Falcon. Immediately, he asked the driver to leave the motorcade and stop at the back so that Chi Duan could get in. That way, it would be easier for him to protect Zhao Qian.
The rest of the motorcade then continued onward, leaving behind rolling dust clouds. Meanwhile, Zhao Qian’s car turned around and headed back to Central City.
Twenty minutes later, still a good distance away from Central City, they saw someone standing on the public road ahead.
Chi Duan sat up straight and stared at the person. This situation was giving him a sense of deja vu. Some time ago, the same well-built person had also stood on a public road, and Chi Duan, too, had been in a luxurious car. It made him feel as if the passage of time had been distorted.
Zhao Qian was lying against a seat but still keenly sensed that something was wrong. In a feeble whisper, he asked, “What’s wrong?”
Chi Duan sighed and said, “Someone is blocking our way. Do you remember the person blocking my way when you sent me back to Yangzhi City? He’s blocking our way again.”
Zhao Qian’s expression changed, because he knew who Chi Duan was referring to. If it was that person, they would be unlikely to win even if Zhao Qian was in his top form and worked together with Chi Duan.
After some hesitation, Chi Duan said, “I can try to stop him for a while, but you’ll need to go back to Central City on your own, Mr. Zhao.”
“That’s our best course of action,” Zhao Qian said decisively.
Martial artists could outrun a car for a short amount of time, and destroying a car’s balance and parts wasn’t difficult for them. That was why if no one stopped the man, he could easily destroy their car. That was why staying in the car and avoiding him wasn’t a good idea.
Someone had to go out to stop him.
“Take care of Mr. Zhao,” Chi Duan said to the assistant and got out of the car.
Zhao Qian waited until Chi Duan started walking forward before he ordered, “Start driving.”
“Okay,” the driver said and quickly turned the steering wheel while also increasing the car’s speed.
Zhao Qian couldn’t see what was going on outside, but he could hear the sound of fists and kicks clashing. When they passed by Chi Duan and the person, the car trembled violently for a moment, as if it had jumped before landing back heavily on the road. Once it finally stopped jolting around, the driver and assistant’s breathing was rapid.
Soon, they left the clashing sounds behind them.
At this point, Zhao Qian finally sensed the abnormalities in his body disappear. He regained some of his strength and took a piece of paper from his pocket before handing it to his assistant. “Send this telegram over.”
It was one of his backup plans, though he wasn’t sure whether the plan would kick in on time.
After the assistant sent the telegram out, he drank some water and went to sleep in order to speed up his recovery.
But soon after he closed his eyes, he sensed the driver slowing down again. Since Zhao Qian was incredibly sensitive to such changes, his eyes snapped open, and he sensed his assistant tensing up while shivering. “Help me up,” he said grimly.
The assistant quickly helped Zhao Qian sit up, and Zhao Qian saw a car by the road. Next to it was a person holding a saber. His maroon scarf covered the lower half of his face. When wind blew, it made the scarf dance.
The assistant broke out into cold sweat. “Mr. Zhao, that’s the National General Affairs Bureau’s uniform. W-What should we do?”
As Zhao Qian stared at the person, he narrowed his eyes and said calmly, “Send another telegram telling them our location.”
The assistant hurriedly put on his headphones.
Zhao Qian kept his eyes trained ahead. While he hadn’t met Chen Chuan before, he had seen his photo and instinctively knew that it was him. After some deliberation, he said to the driver, “Charge at him!”
“Understood.”
The driver floored the gas pedal and increased the speed to crash into the person. Honestly, he had harbored a similar thought since they met the previous man.
We could have just rammed into that martial artist. There wasn’t any need for Mr. Chi to get out.
Chen Chuan stood silently with the Frost King Saber in hand. While he wasn’t in the city and couldn’t see the raccoon eating away at Zhao Qian’s organs like Phantom Form, he could tell that the damage was pretty great based on the feedback he got from the raccoon.
The fact that Zhao Qian was returning also proved that he was hurt pretty heavily.
Everything was going as planned.
All that was left was to put an end to this entire saga.
As Chen Chuan watched the car speeding toward him, he didn’t avoid it. Instead, he started running toward it. When they were about to collide, he swiftly took a step to the left, spun around, and delivered a horizontal slash at the speeding car.
Zhao Qian’s pupils shrank, and he quickly fell back.
The top of the car was instantly sliced off. When the saber cut through the metal plating, sparks flew out. The saber went straight to the back, and the roof was sliced off.
Once Chen Chuan moved past the car, he straightened his body and turned around, only to see the car swaying about after moving forward a little more. While Chen Chuan had intentionally spared the driver, the cut-off A and B pillars, along with the shattered windows, made the man unable to steady the car.
Chen Chuan took another step forward. Everything around him slowed down as he shot forward and moved past the flying shattered glass. In an instant, he arrived behind the car and rammed his shoulder against it. The car lost its balance and started skidding forward while spinning. It only stopped after ramming into a guard rail.
Chen Chuan pushed his top hat down and walked over slowly.
The driver didn’t even dare to move as he watched Chen Chuan get closer through the left side-view mirror. Panic filled his face. Finally, he knew why they should stop when they ran into martial artists.
Since the assistant hadn’t fastened his seat belt, he fainted during the attack. Meanwhile, even though Zhao Qian was heavily injured, due to his great physical abilities as a martial artist, he wasn’t injured by the attack and was lying against his seat.
With a quick search, he dragged out a refrigerator from under the car seat and opened it. As cold air gushed out, he retrieved a needle and jabbed it into his neck, injecting red liquid into his body.
In an instant, a wave of power filled his body, and he felt as if he had regained his vitality. After taking a deep breath, he pulled at the latch on the car door, and a double-handed longsword fell out.
He grabbed it, kicked the door open, and got out. He was still a little weak, but once he got outside, he found himself able to stand straight, and he began walking toward Chen Chuan.
As he stared at Chen Chuan’s brilliant, black eyes, he suddenly vanished from the spot and appeared right in front of him. Then, he threw a punch.
Halfway through, Chen Chuan grabbed his arm. At the same time, he rammed the saber’s sheath into Zhao Qian’s face and sent him flying.
He had wanted to adjust his body while airborne, but his mutated tissue and organs were all heavily damaged and couldn’t support him, so he crashed on the ground. With a tumble, he pushed his hands against the ground and got himself up before staring at Chen Chuan and thinking, Is he on meds?
He had wanted to defeat Chen Chuan with his speed as a Third Limit martial artist, but Chen Chuan was able to keep up, which meant that he had taken medicine.
After wiping off the blood at the corners of his mouth and spitting out a few shattered teeth, Zhao Qian lifted his sword. With a flick, the sword slid off the sheath. He grabbed the hilt with both hands, lifted it to the side of his head, and pointed the tip at his target.
While Chen Chuan moved toward Zhao Qian with steady footsteps, he brought the Frost King Saber up and tugged off the sheath.
The moment he was close enough, Zhao Qian stomped against the ground and charged forward. He leaned forward, switched to holding his sword with just one hand, and, with a flash of the sword, thrust it at Chen Chuan’s face.
Chen Chuan brought his saber up with both hands to parry the attack, fully intending to use it to test the waters, but Zhao Qian quickly pulled the sword back and avoided the saber before delivering another swift thrust. But Chen Chuan was able to chain his saber’s attacks, and he easily brought his saber down. If Zhao Qian didn’t change the trajectory of the thrust, Chen Chuan was bound to hit his sword.
Zhao Qian changed his attack again. He grabbed the sword with both hands and brought it up just as he twisted his waist, attempting to use the power generated to make his sword knock the saber away. Once he was successful, he would twist his waist around again and swing his sword back from the other direction. The moment both attacks landed, Chen Chuan would be cut in half.
But the moment their weapons clashed, he felt a wave of refined force charging into his body. Technique-based refined forces required power generated from mutated tissue and Zhao Qian no longer had enough to defend himself, so he couldn’t block it. He ended up not only unable to put his plan into motion, but even losing his sword in the process.
The next second, he saw a flash from Chen Chuan’s saber and felt a chill in his chest. Immediately, he lost all his strength, and the energy he had managed to squeeze out of his body after taking the red injection rapidly depleted, but before he could slump down on the ground, he found his field of vision slowly rising. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
After stabbing Zhao Qian, Chen Chuan brought his arm up, lifting his enemy until he was suspended in the air. Calmly, he stared at Zhao Qian. “You took Shen Zheng’s sister with you, didn’t you? Where is she now?”
Blood kept flowing out of Zhao Qian’s mouth, but he did his best to sneer at him. “That’s what you wanted to know? I won’t tell you. You’ll never be able to find her.”
Suddenly, Chen Chuan sensed something and looked behind him. Someone was crouching on the railing. He wore goggles and a helmet, and his arms were made of two long blades that seemed to have been secured in place with the implants on his arms.
When Chen Chuan turned to look at him, the person grinned, pulled down his goggles, and straightened his body as he looked at Zhao Qian. “You must be my client. Am I late or not, I wonder?”
