Chapter 91: A Kindred Spirit?

Hearing Christo’s words, Donk let out a chuckle.

"Boy, stop joking. Didn’t you hear what I said before? The crimson dome can withstand attacks from a fifth-stager at the least. What can a first-stager like you even do?"

Christo didn’t reply but instead said to Drai, "You can release your skill now, Drai. You’ll need it when you go inside."

Drai furrowed his brows in hesitation. He didn’t know what had happened for Christo to be this overly-confident despite not being able to release himself from Donk’s grab.

"Sorry, but I’m not sure if I should do that, Christo," Drai objected. "What if—"

"It’s fine," Christo immediately cut him off. "I’ll take care of Donk if it looks like he’s going to betray us."

Donk instantly burst into laughter upon hearing this absurd statement. He thought that he might just snap this cocky heretic’s neck if not for his deal with the Anomaly.

Christo ignored Donk and instead began moving his lips, letting out an inaudible whistle.

"Master," said a gruff voice less than a second after Christo’s secret call.

Donk, who was laughing in amusement behind Christo, was stunned. His heart had stopped briefly when he saw a bearded old man in a weathered grey robe suddenly appear beside his hostage.

"Who are you!?" Donk immediately questioned. His hand tightened in reflex around Christo’s neck. However, Donk suddenly felt a tremendous force tightening around his wrist.

"Release your hand," Liam coldly ordered while pinching Donk’s wrist with his fingers, preventing him from clenching further.

At this moment, Donk realized he was facing an expert. Yet he hesitated and didn’t immediately let go of Christo. After all, wouldn’t he be defenseless once his hostages were released? Even Drai could go back on his words since Donk had outlived his usefulness.

"So be it," Liam said, his right hand flashed.

"Stop!" Christo hurriedly shouted.

Obeying his master’s command, Liam instantly froze with his hand outstretched.

Beads of sweat ran down Donk’s pale face. He could feel the old man’s fingertips pressing against his carotid artery below his jaw.

Donk instantly released his hands from his two hostages and dropped to the ground. His body quivered as he sat there in shock.

"Fuck you, dude!" Jian cursed and jumped away from Donk, running toward Drai. He only stopped after safely reaching his friend.

"Phew! Luckily, he came to make a deal. I would’ve probably died if he had actually aimed to kill us," Jian remarked while rubbing his sore neck.

Towering beside Jian, Drai finally realized the reason why Christo was completely confident earlier. He promptly released his skill, shrinking rapidly until he was around Jian’s height.

Glancing at his System screen, Drai immediately sighed.

’Looks like I spent around four minutes in maximum size. If I knew Donk wasn’t really trying to attack us, I would’ve reduced my size a lot earlier and saved plenty of time. But what’s done is done...’ Drai thought, slightly regretful.

Meanwhile, Christo was slowly making his way toward his friends. Following slightly behind him was his loyal servant.

"I know you’ve become a lot softer since you entered here, Master, but why spare that zealot?" Liam quietly asked.

"He provided us with information, and Drai had a deal with him too. I reckon my friend won’t feel great if you ruthlessly kill him since Donk’s a rather pitiful guy after all," Christo replied, recalling Donk’s story earlier.

"The black pill seems interesting. Should I grab some and bring them back, Master? Sir Nikos could make use of them," Liam suggested.

"Sure. You can check if the other zealots also carry a black pill," Christo said.

"Well, I could just interrogate that man," Liam remarked while glancing at Donk, who was currently fleeing in a hurry through the road where Drai and friends had come from.

"Let him be. I suspect he doesn’t have long until he turns back into an idiot, which will make it near impossible to extract any useful information from him. Just grab the next one that we encounter."

Liam nodded and replied, "As you wish, Master."

Shortly after, the two arrived near the barrier where Drai and Jian had been waiting.

"Uh... Who’s the old man, Christo?" Jian straightly asked. Although he didn’t witness it directly, Jian knew that Liam had somehow helped them escape from Donk’s grasp.

Instead of answering, Christo turned to Liam and said, "I know you’re already familiar with them, but please introduce yourself to my roommates."

"Very well," Liam said before stepping forward. "I am Liam, my master’s servant," Liam introduced himself to Drai and Jian with a slight nod.

"I’m Drai. Thanks for your help, Mr. Liam," Drai said while approaching Liam with a smile on his face, offering a handshake.

Liam slightly hesitated but still reciprocated the gesture, shaking Drai’s hand.

"I was just helping Master. And just call me Liam, no need for honorifics."

Drai nodded as his smile became even warmer after feeling Liam’s extremely rugged hand that was similar to his own. Drai felt that he had finally met a long-awaited kindred spirit since he had never encountered anyone else with such lovely hands during his stay in the academy.

"Ahem," Jian signaled from behind. While Drai was enjoying his handshake too much, he was awkwardly waiting for his turn. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"Oh, right. Well, I hope we can talk often, Mister—I mean, Liam," Drai said as he finally let go of Liam’s hand and stepped back.

As he glanced at Drai’s beaming expression, Liam secretly thought, ’No wonder Master seems to cherish him so much. Such a pure soul is impossible to find in the faction. I failed to realize this when looking from a distance, but Master must be a lot less wary when he’s with this child.’

Meanwhile, Jian’s face was rueful. His hand was already hanging in front Liam, but the old man seemed to be preoccupied with his thoughts.

"Ahem! I’m Jian!" Jian loudly said, sounding awkward.

"Oh, hello," Liam replied thoughtlessly, shaking Jian’s hand for a second before releasing it. He then stepped back behind Christo, assuming his usual position.

A vein popped up on Jian’s forehead. He quickly returned to Drai, glancing at him.

’Even this old man finds it obvious who the Favored Son of Heaven is, huh? Whatever. Just wait until my fortune arrives...’ Jian silently remarked while thinking about his beast mark on his chest.
