Chapter 97: Swift Battles in the Courtyard

Flo looked at Natalia in astonishment, exclaiming, "Did Nat just send that huge guy flying?!"

Jian, on the other hand, kept quiet. From his expression, it seemed like he was preoccupied with thoughts.

Meanwhile, Christo instructed right away, "Go take care of him, Liam. And this time, don’t dawdle."

"Ahem. Forgive me, Master," Liam said before vanishing on the spot.

The reason Liam had taken his time in saving Jian earlier was because he had found it rather intriguing that the young man was able to fight back against a far stronger opponent. In fact, he wanted to see how far Jian could go, and therefore, he had only interrupted at the last moment—almost too late, even.

Back at the destroyed wall, Natalia prepared to charge her skill once more. She wasn’t sure if a direct attack would be effective, but she had no other options but to use Empyrean Cross. She felt that her other skills were not strong enough to inflict damage on the large robed man, especially after seeing that the man looked rather unharmed even after she had ambushed him with a fully charged Empyrean Cross.

Sensing Natalia’s surge of power, the brutish man grinned wider. He had been feeling really bored with the relatively easy mission, so Natalia’s retaliation was a welcomed source of entertainment for him. He bent his knees, preparing to leap toward the feisty young girl.

But at this moment, the brute suddenly felt goosebumps. Being a wild person, he had always trusted his instincts, so he instantly empowered himself. With a crackle, all his long hair straightened outward, becoming stronger than steel and sharper than blades. He was now looking like a giant white porcupine.

Suddenly, a gruff voice sounded in the brute’s ears.

"Futile."

Following this, a tremendous force slammed against the brute, sending him flying into the distance before crashing into a small building.

"Gghh!" the brute grunted as he slowly rose from the rubble. His bones were broken, and his spiky white hair was in tatters.

Gentle footsteps sounded, and an old man in a grey robe soon entered the brute’s sight, walking toward him with his right hand covered in a subtle golden aura.

"W-who are you?!" the brute shouted, not doubting a bit that this seemingly frail old man was the one who had made him like this, for the wild man’s instincts were screaming at him to get away from the old man. Unfortunately for the brute, he couldn’t even walk properly at this point.

As he neared the brute who was now quivering in fear, Liam’s hand flashed.

"Sleep, child," he softly said before turning around and vanishing.

The brute wanted to say something, but he realized he couldn’t let out a single word. He then felt an overwhelming pain from his chest. Looking down, the brute’s eyes were glued to the large gaping hole on his bloody chest. His body immediately limped, dropping into the rubble.

While his vision rapidly turn dark, the brute couldn’t help but lament his powerlessness. And as he wondered why such a powerful old man was roaming around the first-year area, he finally took his last breath.

Back in the courtyard, Liam appeared silently at Christo’s side.

"It is done," he curtly mentioned.

Christo nodded in acknowledgement and looked at Natalia, who had stopped charging her skill and was currently looking in bafflement at the small building in the distance, wondering how the enemy had suddenly flew and smashed into it.

Flo ran forward and waved at Natalia while yelling, "Nat! Come down! Christo and Jian are here!"

Natalia turned toward the voice and finally saw her friend. She followed Flo’s pointing hand and spotted Christo and Jian at the distance, along with an old man who was standing beside them.

And just as Natalia wanted to shout in reply, the room behind her exploded, blasting her away and sending her plummeting to the ground.

Before Christo could tell Liam to save her, Jian had already sprinted forward. After silently activating all his empowering skills, he leaped over Flo who was watching in horror, and proceeded to catch Natalia midair.

Jian landed safely on the ground and let Natalia down.

Despite her shock, Natalia quickly said, "Thanks," before turning her head away, slightly blushing.

Jian didn’t pay much attention to her embarrassment, as he was looking up, brandishing his sword and fully alert.

From the smoking room, a figure leaped out and immediately zoomed toward Jian and Natalia.

Boom! 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

The explosion sent debris flying, along with Jian and Natalia who ended up rolling on the nearby pavement.

A smoky figure emerged from the explosion site. It was a small man who was covered in electric sparks. With his hands in his pockets, he eyed his surroundings before stopping his gaze at the old man beside Christo.

"Are you the one who defeated my team members?" he coldly asked.

Liam nodded and stepped forward. But before he could confront the enemy, the small robed man flicked a black pill into his mouth and immediately swallowed it.

"Aaarrrggghhh!" the man howled in pain as cracks formed all over his body. Suddenly, lightning sparks emanated from these cracks, converging into a powerful electric aura that surrounded the man.

Unlike in Donk’s case, the man’s transformation happened very quickly. His condition had already begun to stabilize after only a few seconds.

"Perfect," the man remarked as he clenched his fist, briefly indulging in his increased power. His robes had burned and scattered during his transformation, leaving his upper body exposed.

The man’s glowing white eyes looked at Liam again for a second before he suddenly released an electric torrent toward the old man.

Liam’s figure blurred as he evaded the attack, bringing his master along as he appeared behind a nearby tree.

The robed man’s attack struck Liam’s previous spot and exploded the ground, resembling a lightning strike.

"Stay away, Master," Liam mentioned to Christo before vanishing once more. He reappeared behind the transformed robed man and aimed his hand at the man’s head.

To Liam’s surprise, his opponent flickered and flashed away, sliding to a stop a distance away.

"Hmph! Don’t underestimate me, old man. I’m many times stronger than Brod and Liara when I’m in this form," the electric man haughtily said. He then unleashed an electric storm from his body, scorching the area around him.

A loud commotion ensued as the young girls who had been lingering in the area frantically screamed and fled from the battle. The electric man didn’t seem to care, as his attention was solely focused on Liam.

’His power seems to be on par with a third-stager, but his speed could rival a fourth or even fifth-stager. Looks like I shouldn’t hold back," Liam thought as he pulled Dawn Rose out once more.

"Die!" the electric man shouted as he flashed toward Liam. The lightning storm that encased him surged, leaving a wide burning trail in its wake.

Liam looked closely at his charging opponent. He let out a single breath, and a golden aura surged from within him.

In an instant, Liam’s rapier thrusted forward even faster than the electric man’s speed. A burst of golden light shot out from Dawn Rose, reaching the opponent in no time.

Before the electric man could react, the golden light blasted through his lightning storm and passed through his entire body. And before he could realize what had happened, his whole body integrated.

Jian, Natalia, and Flo dazedly stared at the sight with their jaws dropping to the floor. Liam’s attack had left no other damage aside from the man’s destroyed body which was currently blown away by the night breeze after it had turned into ashes.

Putting away his rapier, Liam turned to his master and nodded. If not for the surroundings, he would have preferred to enjoy the fight more by not going all out from the beginning. Alas, he decided to end the fight quickly lest his opponent harm his master or anyone else.

Shortly after, Christo and the others had gathered near the female dorm’s entrance. Only Flo was missing since she had gone inside to fetch Auri.

"Where’s Drai?" Natalia asked with a concerned expression.

Jian was still quiet, so Christo was the one who answered her.

"He has something to do. We’ll meet him later at the headquarters."

"What is he doing in the middle of this raid? Can’t we go together? Why are we leaving him behind again?" Natalia questioned further. She couldn’t help but recall the similar situation during their venture where they went ahead without Drai who was busy dealing with the large root.

Christo shook his head and replied, "I know what you’re thinking, but Drai was the one who chose to do it alone. You know he has a powerful skill, so you shouldn’t worry too much. He even managed to beat two guys who were responsible for our area. You know how we’re almost totally powerless against these guys, so just let him do the thing he had set out to do. We’ll just be a burden if we go with him."

Natalia pursed her lips in frustration. Once again, she felt powerless. She gazed into the distance, wondering what Drai was doing right now and whether he was okay.
