Chapter 456: Chapter 456: The Sentinels (Part 2)

Point-of-View: Ariella Velle

———————————————————————————

"Not much further left, we’re almost out," I remarked, as we reached the first floor of the Dungeon.

We’d made it back pretty fast, moving at a fairly brisk pace. I still feel pretty uneasy, I really hope it’s nothing and I’m just being paranoid.

"You know, we couldn’t made it down a lot faster it you let me blast through," Ciel sighed wistfully.

"Yeah, no, we couldn’t risk caving ourselves in," I responded with a sigh.

I swear, she’s like a broken record sometimes, I-...huh, I wonder what that phrase actually means? I mean, I know it’s used in the context when someone repeats themselves often, but now that I think about it...what exactly is a broken record?

A record of what? And if something’s broken, doesn’t that mean it won’t work? Shouldn’t it be something like malfunctioning record instead? Or maybe looping record? 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

But, again, a record of what, exactly? Hm...maybe Kai knows. I think that saying originated in the era he previously lived in, so I’ll ask him later.

"There it is, the entrance," Remarked Brid, as the entrance of the Dungeon came into sight.

"Finally...," Rex sighed in relief, as we approached the entrance, before stepping out.

As I walked back outside, my eyes widened in surprise as I spotted a jet on the ground ahead, a man stepping out and jogging over.

"I need you to come with me, Miss Ariella Velle. Three Sanctuaries are currently under attack by unknown, powerful Monsters. You’ve been assigned to handle the Monster attacking Sanctuary Gamma, along with two of the other X-Aces. The information should be in your I-Watch, we need to leave immediately," He remarked urgently.

"Woah, for real? Can I come too?" Inquired Ciel with a gleam in her eyes, as I hurried towards the car to get my I-Watch.

"No, only the X-Aces have been assigned, several Hunters, including multiple Aces, have already been killed."

Seriously? Must be the Demon Lord’s Generals...

"Alright, let’s go," I remarked, as I put on my I-Watch and jogged over to the jet, adding as I glanced at the others, "I’ll see you guys when I get back, then."

"Good luck, Vice-GM," Responded Brid with a thumbs up.

"U-Um, yeah, good luck," Added Iqra with a timid smile.

"Wh-What they said," Muttered Cleo awkwardly.

As the rest of them wished me luck too, except Damien, who instead rattled off some dramatic spiel I didn’t really understand, I strapped in as the jet took off, shooting through the air rapidly.

I tapped on my I-Watch display to bring it up, grimacing as I read the messages I’d received from the Union.

Okay, so I’ve been assigned to Sanctuary Gamma, along with Aarav and Jin. Kai’s in Sanctuary Epsilon with the Apostles. And the third place under attack, Sanctuary Zeta, will be handled by Beatriz, Jaden and Iseul.

Kai’s the only one who’s arrived in his assigned location so far, less than five minutes ago. Hm, Aarav and Jin should be arriving in Sanctuary Gamma soon, I’ll probably get there about ten minutes after they do.

Jaden and Iseul are five minutes away from Sanctuary Zeta, and Beatriz is just under ten minutes away.

These attacks began...over an hour ago. A lot of people have already been killed. They had begun evacuations, but these Monsters emerged from the single-floor Dungeons they were deployed in sooner than expected.

The death toll is already estimated to be around thirty thousand, and counting. What is this? As powerful as they are, Archdemons, Dragon Kings and King Ants shouldn’t be strong enough to kill this many people in just around an hour.

Oh, here we go, they’ve attached some clips of these Monsters, let’s see-...wait, what the hell are these creatures? I’ve never seen any of these species before...

Point-of-View: Aarav Gill

"Ah, those Auras...finally, a challenge. I was getting rather bored of slaughtering these helpless things."

"Hey, uh...any idea what I’m looking at?" I asked Jin in bemusement, as I eyed the strange figure before us warily.

"Nope. I’m looking at it too, and I don’t have a clue," He shook his head with a grimace.

"Oh, how rude of me. Greetings, I am one of the Demon Lord’s Sentinels, I am known as Viscous, the Slime King," The Monster himself with a slight bow of his head.

He had a humanoid, translucent, slender figure, the right side of his body had an aqua blue hue, while his left side was a bright, fiery orange.

His eyes were narrow slits, the right one glowing blue, and the left one glowing orange. He didn’t have a mouth, ears or nose, his head slightly ovular in shape, and completely even and smooth except for his eyes.

He was a bit on the shorter side, and had a small black orb floating around his torso. Is that a Core? It’s tiny...

I’ve never heard of a Slime King before, is it a new Monster? More importantly...I’ve never seen such a massive Aura before.

The scale and intensity look about two-...no, more like three...-times greater than any of the Calamity Level Monsters I’ve encountered before.

"Any word on our backup?" I asked Jin quietly.

"Ariella is eight minutes away," He responded as he glanced at his I-Watch display.

"Crap...alright, guess we’ve got no choice but to fight, no way we can buy that much time talking," I sighed wistfully, forming a bone cannon over my right hand as Jin stepped back.

"Looks like you’re ready to begin, humans. Now, I should tell you, this will be futile on your part. But if you adequately entertain me, I will make sure to kill you quickly and painlessly-...," Viscous began, before trailing off as I fired a rapid, piercing blood beam, shooting through the middle of his torso.

"Alright, finally nailed my aim, I-...huh?" I blurted out, as his Core moved out of the way before my beam could pierce it.

I know Slimes can move their Cores around their bodies, unlike other Monsters, but not that fast...how the hell did he react so quickly?

"Well, that was rude. All you had to do was wait five seconds and I would have been done talking. Very well, then...you shall die painfully," He remarked, as the hole in his head swiftly closed up...
