Chapter 147: Chapter 147: Serena, I’m Sorry

Serena Yardley hadn’t slept all night. She just sat on the living room sofa, waiting for Ethan Yardley.

Ethan Yardley walked through the door at seven in the morning.

He thought Serena had woken up early specifically to go to the hospital with him. Seeing her dozing on the living room sofa, he walked over and spoke.

"Serena, are you ready? If you’re ready, let’s go."

Serena Yardley roused from her groggy state. Looking at the tall, imposing man standing before her, she quickly got up and said ingratiatingly, "You’re back?"

"Mhm. If you’re ready, let’s go."

He didn’t dare to look at her for more than a second, turning to walk ahead.

Serena Yardley hadn’t expected him to be in such a hurry.

She stood there, her eyes rimmed with red, unwilling to move.

After a few steps, Ethan Yardley sensed she wasn’t following and turned back to look at her. "What’s wrong?"

"Sir, Miss Serena, breakfast is ready. Please come and eat."

Before Serena Yardley could speak, Mrs. Miller’s voice came from not far away.

Ethan thought she wanted to eat, so he added, "Let’s have breakfast first, then. We can go after we’ve eaten."

He turned and went to the dining room.

Serena Yardley still stood frozen in place.

’She really couldn’t understand why the Ethan of today was agreeing to everything she wanted.’

’Why couldn’t he be domineering and tyrannical like before, stopping her from doing things out of anger?’

After a long while, she finally walked toward the dining room with heavy steps, feeling a little dizzy.

Sitting across from the man, she lowered her head and put some food in her mouth. Mrs. Miller always meticulously prepared her meals according to her tastes. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

She usually loved the food.

But today, she found every dish hard to swallow.

She couldn’t manage more than a couple of bites. After a sip of milk, she finally raised her eyes to look at the man across from her.

Ethan didn’t look at her—or perhaps, he didn’t dare to, out of guilt.

There was no expression on his handsome face, but it wasn’t hard to tell that he wasn’t in a good mood either.

Remembering what Nina had told her last night, Serena Yardley mustered up her courage and spoke.

"Ethan Yardley..."

"I’m here."

He answered extremely quickly, his voice especially gentle and pleasant.

But he just wouldn’t lift his eyes to look at her.

Serena Yardley gazed at him, her heart aching with a sour pang.

"Actually, I’ve been thinking a lot this past week. I don’t think it was entirely your fault. If you really can’t bear to lose the baby, then... let’s keep it."

’It seemed like she was the one who couldn’t bear to lose it now.’

But she didn’t have the face to say she knew she was wrong and shouldn’t have been fighting with him for so long.

She just hoped that once he understood her meaning, he would give her an out.

Ethan Yardley finally raised his eyes to look at her.

But he chose silence. His expressionless face and bottomless eyes made it impossible to guess his thoughts.

Serena Yardley gazed back at him.

Seeing him remain silent, she brazenly continued:

"I’m willing to take good care of the baby and give birth for you. And I’m willing to work on our marriage. I’ll be more mature in the future and try not to throw tantrums at you."

’These were her true feelings right now.’

’She hoped that by taking the initiative to spell things out, he would clearly understand what she wanted.’

Ethan Yardley still chose silence.

’He truly hadn’t expected Serena to have a change of heart and take the initiative to make peace.’

’But did he deserve it now?’

Ethan Yardley avoided her gaze, trying to convince himself not to care about what happened that night.

But he couldn’t.

Lowering his head, he said in a heavy voice, "Serena, I’m sorry. I think I should give you back your freedom."

He couldn’t bring himself to say that he had been the one to betray their marriage.

He also didn’t want to upset her, so he could only suggest she leave in a roundabout way.

Seeing his attitude and hearing his words, Serena Yardley couldn’t hold back as tears instantly welled up in her eyes.

She tried hard to control her emotions and asked with a bitter smile:

"Have you... lost patience with me? Or do you really think I’m not worth it, that you don’t love me anymore?"

Ethan still didn’t look at her. "I’m the one who doesn’t deserve your love. I was a bastard from the very beginning, setting a trap for you to fall into. I knew you cared about Sylvia Schuyler’s presence, yet I still brought her home.

"I knew your health was poor, yet I took you to the mountains, which led to an accident where you nearly lost your life.

"I knew you were young and still in school, that it wasn’t the right time for a baby, yet I stubbornly got you pregnant anyway. I’m a real fucking asshole. A guy like me doesn’t deserve to keep someone as wonderful as you by my side."

His voice grew low and hoarse by the end.

He was also trying hard to restrain his emotions, but even after saying all that, he still didn’t raise his eyes to look at her.

After listening, Serena Yardley was completely stunned.

’She didn’t know what to do now.’

’It seemed his mind was made up.’

She lowered her head, once again unable to stop the tears from falling.

Ethan Yardley glanced at her. Seeing her crying again, his heart ached as if it were being torn apart.

He pulled out a tissue to wipe her tears, his own eyes turning red. "I’m sorry, Serena. After we separate, I’ll arrange for someone to take good care of you."

Serena Yardley sniffled, dodging the hand he used to wipe her tears, and cried out loud:

"If I was being too dramatic before, I apologize. I just want to tell you now, I don’t want to get rid of the baby. I want to live a good life with you.

"Ethan Yardley, why would you hit me with this right when I’ve had a change of heart? Are you really doing this for my own good?

"Don’t you know that losing two babies within half a year is bad for my health? Don’t you know it’ll be hard for me to get remarried after a divorce?"

’In truth, all of that was secondary.’

It was only in this moment, learning his true intentions, that she realized just how much her heart ached.

’It’s because of love that it hurts, right?’

She clearly loved him so much.

Now, for the sake of being with him, she had even cast aside her dignity to make peace, so why couldn’t he understand what she wanted?

Ethan couldn’t bear to see her cry.

He pushed his chair back, stood up, and walked around the dining table to her side, pulling her into his arms.

"I’m sorry."

Serena Yardley buried her face against his stomach, her voice choked with sobs.

"It’s not all your fault. I was wrong too. I’ve thought it through now. I just want to have this baby for you. Can’t we just be a happy family of three?"

’Could they?’

He asked himself the same question.

’Could he forget what happened that night, take good care of her, and spend the rest of his life making it up to her?’

’If she didn’t want to leave and didn’t want to get rid of the baby, how could he bear to push her away again?’

Holding her tightly, Ethan Yardley opened his mouth and answered, "Okay."

Serena Yardley looked up at him, pleasantly surprised. "You agree? You’re not mad at me anymore?"

Ethan lowered his head to meet her gaze, cupping her small, tear-stained face with both hands, filled with self-reproach. "I was never mad at you. I just wanted you to have the freedom to choose."

"Well, right now, I just want to be with you."

She raised her hands to hug his waist, pressing her small face against his stomach.

Ethan hugged her back, a lump in his throat making it too painful to speak.

’He just hoped he could quickly convince himself to forget about that night.’
