Chapter 150: Chapter 150: No Longer Sharing a Bed with Her

Serena Yardley really couldn’t figure out what was going on with the man beside her.

Something about him just felt off.

Noticing her staring, Ethan Yardley avoided her gaze. "You should go to bed. I’ll be busy for a while longer."

"Are you really this busy with work right now?"

Serena frowned, feeling a little frustrated.

’He wasn’t like this before.’

’Whenever she got close to him, he would hold her. And he always came to bed when it was late.’

’It was bad enough he hadn’t slept at home for the past two days, but now he wasn’t even coming to the bedroom at night.’

"It really has been busy lately. You should go to sleep."

Ethan didn’t dare to look at her, burying his head back in his paperwork.

Seeing him act this way, Serena felt a strange pang in her chest.

Not wanting to disturb his work any longer, she turned and left the study. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Back in their bedroom, she sat up against the headboard, her mind racing with wild thoughts again.

She drifted off to sleep before she even realized it.

When she woke up the next day, she was surprised to find the space beside her empty.

A wave of disappointment washed over her. She sat up and checked the time: seven o’clock.

’Had he already gotten up?’

Shaking off the thought, Serena washed up and went downstairs. She saw Ethan already sitting in the dining room waiting for her, so she went over and sat down across from him.

"What time did you get up?"

Serena asked.

"Six," Ethan replied casually, setting his tablet aside. He gestured and said,

"Go ahead and eat. I’m leaving for a business trip right after breakfast. I might be gone for a few days, so take care of yourself."

"Mm."

Serena nodded. After a couple of bites, she asked again, "What time did you come back to the room last night? It felt like you never came in to sleep."

Ethan didn’t look at her, keeping his head down as he ate elegantly.

"I was worried I’d wake you, so I slept in the guest room."

"Ohh..."

’So that’s why the bed felt empty.’

’He hadn’t slept with her.’

After breakfast, Serena saw Ethan out. She watched his car disappear into the distance before tidying up and heading out to find Nina Thorne.

When she arrived, she happened to find Mrs. Grant there.

Serena didn’t make a sound, standing in the foyer to listen.

"Nina Thorne, do you insist on making this ugly? You won’t necessarily win if we go to court. No matter how you slice it, Leo Grant has Grant family blood.

As long as the Grant Family refuses to let him go, you can forget about raising him alone."

Mrs. Grant’s presence was intimidating, her expression vicious.

But Nina Thorne was completely unfazed. "This doesn’t concern you. Please have Quinn Gardner speak to me himself."

"What do you mean it doesn’t concern me? I’m his mother, and Leo is my grandson!"

"So *now* you remember Leo is your grandson?"

Nina met Mrs. Grant’s gaze, her own eyes filled with hatred. "When you imprisoned him and took his bone marrow, why didn’t you think about him being your grandson then?"

"Ma’am, I’m calling you that one last time out of respect. But if you insist on meddling in my affairs with Quinn, then don’t blame me when I stop being civil."

"You..."

Mrs. Grant was livid. "Clementine is dead! She’s no longer in this world, so what more could you possibly be dissatisfied with?"

"What does that child’s death have to do with me? You lost your granddaughter, so now you think you can snatch my Leo? Dream on!"

"Nina Thorne, you..."

Mrs. Grant was so enraged her chest heaved. Her meticulously made-up face was contorted with such ferocity that she looked ready to strike Nina.

But getting physical would be beneath her station as the matriarch of the Grant Family.

Finally, choked with anger, she spat, "Fine. I’ll have Quinn talk to you. But you’d better remember this, Nina Thorne. You’ve been grossly disrespectful to your mother-in-law. Don’t you ever think of setting foot in the Grant Family residence again."

Nina laughed. "Don’t worry. Even if the Grant Family rolled out the red carpet for me, I wouldn’t set foot in your house again."

"Those are your words! Hmph!"

Having failed to gain any ground and finding herself in an awkward position, Mrs. Grant had no choice but to make a dejected retreat.

As she passed Serena, she shot her a look but said nothing, slamming the door behind her.

It was the first time Serena had ever seen a mother-in-law be so vicious to her own daughter-in-law.

’My own mother-in-law is so kind and gentle by comparison,’ she thought.

Approaching Nina, Serena asked, "Nina, did she come here demanding the child?"

"Yeah. Just ignore them," Nina said. "Didn’t you have to go to the university today?"

Serena sat down next to her. "I’m heading over this afternoon. I just wanted to come by and chat for a bit."

Nina studied Serena’s unhappy expression and frowned. "What is it? Something on your mind again?"

"No, not at all. I was just bored and wanted to come see you."

"You think I can’t tell when something’s bothering you? Come on, tell me what it is. Maybe I can help."

Nina picked up an apple and started peeling it.

Serena looked down, her mood somber.

’I shouldn’t keep bothering Nina with my problems with Ethan.’

’She has enough of her own to deal with.’

After a moment, Serena said, "It’s really nothing. Ethan’s away on business, so I’m just bored."

"Why has Ethan been traveling for work so much lately?"

Nina sliced the apple and handed a piece to Serena.

"But big bosses like him are always swamped with work, so try not to overthink it. I’m going to change, and then I’ll drive you to the university."

Since she had quit her job and hadn’t started a new one yet, she was pretty bored herself, with not much to do besides taking her son to and from school.

Thankfully, she had Serena to keep her company.

After changing, Nina came back downstairs. Since there was nothing to do at home anyway, she decided to take Serena out.

She drove Serena straight to Arden University, found a parking spot, and the two of them started wandering around the neighborhood.

"There are so many places to eat around your campus. Let’s go look around and see if we can find something really good. I can buy some to bring back for Leo."

The mention of food instantly energized Serena.

"I know this area really well! Let me show you. There’s a place whose wife cakes are super famous. You always have to get a ticket and line up in advance to get them."

"Then I’ll have to see for myself just how good they are."

Nina chuckled and followed Serena down the street.

Perhaps because it was a university district, the streets were bustling with young people, a constant stream of them coming and going.

The shop they were looking for was just ahead. Serena took Nina’s hand and pointed.

"It’s right there, Nina! See? There’s already a line."

Just as Nina was about to look where Serena was pointing, a familiar figure in the adjacent coffee shop caught her eye.

She froze, her gaze fixed on the scene inside through the cafe’s large glass window.

"What’s wrong, Nina?"

Seeing Nina stop, Serena paused as well, following her friend’s gaze into the cafe.

Her eyes widened in surprise. "Mr. Quinn and Cynthia Meyer? Why are they having afternoon tea together on a weekday?"

Nina pulled her gaze away, a bitter feeling inexplicably rising in her chest.

’But what was there to be upset about? They were already separated and going through a divorce. Who he was with was none of her business.’

"Let’s go, Serena."

Nina strode forward, feigning indifference.

Serena hurried to catch up. "Nina, I know that girl. She’s Clementine’s aunt. Maybe Mr. Quinn..."

"Serena, you don’t have to say anything else. Who he’s with now has nothing to do with me. We’re getting divorced one way or another."

"Oh..."

Serena didn’t dare say more. But seeing how pale Nina was, she knew her friend was still very much affected by Quinn seeing other women.

’Honestly, that man...’

’They weren’t even divorced yet, and he couldn’t even be bothered to keep his distance from other women.’

They had been on their way to buy wife cakes, but Nina suddenly said:

"Serena, you should head back to campus. I just remembered I have something else to do, so I have to go."

"Nina, are you okay?"

Serena felt a sudden wave of concern.

Nina forced a smile. "What could be wrong? Don’t worry, I couldn’t care less about that man. You go on back to the university. I’m leaving."

"Okay, then. Drive safe."

"Mm."

After watching Nina leave, Serena turned back for one last glance at the two people in the cafe.

She felt a surge of irritation herself.

But reminding herself that it wasn’t her place to meddle, she ultimately did nothing and returned to the university.

She didn’t have any classes at that time, so Serena went to her old dorm room.

All three of her roommates were in the dorm, everyone except Cynthia Meyer.

They were incredibly welcoming, rushing over to offer her all sorts of snacks and drinks the moment they saw her.

Because of her pregnancy, Serena declined the snacks.

Just as the roommates were in the middle of a lively conversation, Cynthia Meyer pushed the door open and walked in.

She was carrying several large shopping bags from luxury brands. Her expression flickered when she saw Serena in the room, but she quickly pretended not to notice her and walked over to hand the gifts to her roommates.

"I bought these for you all. Help yourselves."

At her words, the roommates swarmed forward excitedly and took the bags from Cynthia’s hands.

"Cynthia, are these really for us?"

"Whoa, is this Chanel? This perfume must be thousands, right?"

"Ahhh! I love this lipstick shade!"

"Wow, I’ve been eyeing this makeup set for ages!"

"Thank you, Cynthia!"

The roommates crowded around Cynthia, hugging her and thanking her profusely.

Cynthia pushed them aside and walked straight over to Serena, stopping in front of her with a haughty air.

"Your family is so rich. I assume you don’t need any of my little gifts, do you?"

Serena looked at the girl before her, sensing an inexplicable hostility from her.

"I certainly don’t," she replied. "Are you with him often?"
