Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 31: Insisting on Causing Trouble
Since he didn’t recognize her, Ethan Yardley saw no reason to dwell on it.
He stood, adjusted his suit, and said to Serena Yardley, "You take care of Raina. I’m going to the office."
Serena Yardley nodded, her gaze lingering on him until he was gone, at which point it fell, full of dejection.
Raina’s voice piped up beside her. "Serena, aren’t you and Ethan in love?"
Serena Yardley turned to the little girl next to her and forced a smile. "Of course we are. We’re very much in love."
"If you’re in love, then why don’t you have a child?"
Raina took Serena Yardley’s hand, pulled her over to the sofa to sit, and spoke with an earnest maturity:
"My oldest brother and his wife sent me to check on the situation between you two. They also told me to tell you that you absolutely have to change Ethan’s mind about not having children.
They also said a mother’s status depends on her children. You can only secure your position in the Yardley Family if you have a child for them, understand?"
Although Raina was only ten, she understood a great deal.
She knew this sister-in-law of hers was an orphan with no status or background who hadn’t even graduated from university.
If a girl like that wanted to hold on to her position as the Young Madam of the Yardley Family, having a child was her only option.
Otherwise, how could she possibly compete with the socialites from prestigious families who dreamed of marrying into the Yardley Family?
Serena Yardley gave a desolate smile, not taking the child’s words to heart. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
She and Ethan could separate at any time, so talk of securing her status with a child and establishing her place in the Yardley Family was meaningless.
She didn’t need those expensive possessions or that burdensome status.
All she wanted was his wholehearted love.
But that now seemed to be a fantasy.
There was nothing for her to think about now. All she had to do was wait for Ethan to draft a new divorce agreement for her to sign.
Once she signed it, she would leave and disappear from his world.
"Serena, why do you look so unhappy? Am I not welcome here?"
Raina asked, blinking her big eyes.
Serena Yardley managed a faint smile, trying hard to suppress the ache in her heart as she quickly shook her head. "Of course not. Why wouldn’t I welcome you?"
"Then let’s go! Give me a tour of the house, and then get a room ready for me. I’m going to stay for a few days."
"Okay."
With only a ten-year age gap between them, there wasn’t much of a divide.
They stood up and went upstairs, hand in hand.
Ethan Yardley went to the office and worked until seven in the evening.
Just as he was about to head home, he got a call from Sylvia Schuyler.
On the phone, Sylvia’s voice was choked with tears. "Ethan, can you come to the hospital and keep me company? I’m scared."
Ethan Yardley frowned, his tone impatient. "I’m not finished with work. You just stay put at the hospital. Isn’t Mrs. Miller there with you?"
"But I miss you, Ethan. The doctor said it’s nothing serious. Can I please come back tonight?"
"Not tonight. We have a relative visiting. You coming over will only add fuel to the fire. That’s all for now. I’m hanging up."
Before Sylvia Schuyler could say another word, Ethan Yardley ended the call and told the driver to take him back to The Sovereign Villa.
「At the hospital.」
Staring at the screen showing that Ethan Yardley had hung up, Sylvia Schuyler’s expression turned sinister as she gritted her teeth.
’He wants to get rid of me? Not a chance.’
’A relative visiting? That plays right into my hands.’
Hearing a noise at the door, Sylvia looked up and cried out in feigned surprise, "Mrs. Miller! Mrs. Miller, I think I can see!"
Mrs. Miller rushed to the bedside, her face alight with genuine surprise. "Really? Miss Schuyler, you can see?"
"Yes, I can see! Quick, pack our things. Let’s go home and give Ethan a surprise."
Truly believing Sylvia Schuyler wanted to surprise Ethan, Mrs. Miller didn’t think twice, quickly packing their things to take her back.
It was seven-thirty when Ethan Yardley arrived home.
He knew Mrs. Miller wasn’t there, so no one had cooked for Serena.
He planned to take her out to eat.
To his surprise, however, he returned to find Serena and Raina sitting in the dining room, eating noodles.
Hearing the sound at the door, they both looked up at the same time.
When they saw it was Ethan Yardley, they paid him no mind and went back to eating.
Ethan Yardley frowned and walked over to them. Standing by the table, he looked at their food with disdain and asked in a low voice, "This is all you’re eating?"
Raina tilted her head back and huffed, "The noodles Serena made are delicious."
Ethan Yardley didn’t believe it.
He never knew Serena could cook.
He pulled out a chair, sat down, and unceremoniously took the bowl of noodles Serena Yardley was eating. Without a trace of his earlier disdain, he started eating them himself.
Serena Yardley glared at him, resentful. "What are you doing? If you want some, cook it yourself."
Ethan Yardley shot her a look. "I pay for your education and let you live in this amazing house. I can’t have a couple of bites of your noodles?"
Serena Yardley was rendered speechless, not daring to argue further.
’In fact, he’s right.’
’It’s just a couple of bites. Besides, I’m full anyway.’
Serena Yardley got up and walked away.
Ethan Yardley couldn’t help but glance at Serena’s retreating figure.
He knew she was unhappy about the divorce.
It seemed that ever since Sylvia Schuyler’s return, her once-smiling face rarely beamed with the same floral radiance.
’How did I turn the carefree, innocent Serena into this pitiful creature, so weighed down by worries that she bursts into tears at the slightest provocation?’
In that moment, Ethan Yardley felt like a complete bastard.
"Ethan, do you love your wife?"
Raina pushed her bowl aside and scooted closer to Ethan, asking in a low voice.
Ethan Yardley reached out and tapped her on the head. "Just eat. Kids should talk less."
Raina pouted and rubbed her head, complaining:
"You two definitely had a fight, didn’t you? Well, I’m telling you, the family said that if Serena can’t give you a child, they’re going to find a new match for you.
I think Serena is pretty and easy to get along with. Since you love her, don’t put her on the spot. Don’t be set on not having kids. Wouldn’t it be great to have a baby with her, one as smart and cute as me?"
Ethan Yardley stared at the child beside him.
’He really had no idea how a ten-year-old brat knew so much.’
He raised a hand and pushed her head away. "Kids shouldn’t meddle in adult affairs."
"I’m not trying to meddle! My parents told me to come here and make sure you two have a baby. If you don’t, my dad is going to be furious with you!"
"That’s enough. Say one more word, and see if I don’t give you a spanking."
Ethan Yardley deliberately put on a fierce expression.
Frustrated by his stubbornness, Raina dropped her chopsticks and hopped off her chair. "Fine, have it your way! We’ll see what you do when the family starts targeting your wife."
Ethan Yardley paid the child’s words no mind.
After he finished eating, he went upstairs.
He was about to take a shower when he entered the walk-in closet and saw Serena Yardley standing on a chair, reaching for her suitcase.
He crossed his arms, leaned against the doorframe, and a teasing smile touched his lips. "What’s this? Throwing another tantrum about moving out?"
Serena Yardley paused in her attempt to get the suitcase and turned to look at the man in the doorway.
She blinked, her face filled with hurt. "Making room for you and Sylvia. It’s going to happen sooner or later anyway."
The mention of this soured Ethan Yardley’s mood.
"I told you, even if we divorce, this place is still yours. The house was bought in your name."
"I don’t need it."
She was defiant.
But her stubbornness made Ethan Yardley lose his temper. "Serena Yardley, are you determined to pick a fight with me?"
