Sir, Please Sign Here to Get a Divorce-Chapter 65: Serena Yardley Is Dead
Serena forced herself to calm down. ’Stay calm.’
’Don’t make a scene. It’s not worth it.’
’The more of a scene you make, the more it proves you care. That will only make him more brazen.’
’No matter how much it hurts, how awful you feel, you have to bear it. Don’t let it show.’
After reminding herself over and over, Serena finally managed to suppress the storm of emotions rising in her chest.
She turned to the man beside her, forcing a calm and composed tone.
"Sorry, I fell asleep in the car. Is there anything you need me to do, Mr. Yardley?"
"..."
’Mr. Yardley?’
Ethan Yardley’s eyes narrowed as he stared at her. Seeing her completely unfazed expression, a bitter, suffocating feeling inexplicably tightened in his chest.
"Serena Yardley, what did you see just now?"
’He’s asking when he already knows the answer.’
Serena’s gaze wavered, and she nearly lost control of her crumbling composure.
She forced herself to hold it together and let out a light laugh. "Oh, I saw everything. You and Miss Schuyler make a perfect couple, Mr. Yardley. Truly a match made in heaven.
"It’s just... next time you want to do something so indiscreet, you should find a more secluded spot. It wouldn’t do for strangers to see, now would it?"
She looked up at him, forcing a smile.
But damn it, tears still welled in her eyes.
The pain in her chest felt like thousands of ants gnawing away at her flesh.
Ethan stared back at her.
When he saw the tears glistening in her eyes, even as she pretended nothing was wrong and joked about him with another woman, his heart suddenly ached as if pierced by a thousand arrows.
Without thinking, he opened his mouth to explain. "A moment ago, it was because—"
"Mr. Yardley, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be leaving. My stomach feels a bit upset, and I need to find a restroom."
Ethan frowned. He wanted to say more, but she dodged him and ran away.
Watching her retreating figure, he chose not to chase after her.
’Maybe she really doesn’t care.’
’Maybe all she wants now is to divorce me as soon as possible. The farther away she is from me, the better.’
But he was the one who wanted the divorce. He was the one who had asked Sylvia to come. And now, seeing Serena walk away without a shred of concern, his heart ached so much he felt like he was going insane.
’Ethan, oh Ethan, what in the world are you doing?’
’A perfectly good marriage, a perfectly good person... look what you’ve tormented them into.’
His mind was in turmoil, but remembering he had work to do, he had no choice but to get to it.
What Ethan didn’t notice was that the moment he left, Sylvia Schuyler emerged from behind a large boulder nearby.
Watching the man’s retreating figure, she curled her lips into a cold sneer, her eyes filled with sinister malice.
She then headed in the direction Serena had disappeared.
Serena rushed to the riverbank. Seeing that the older man hadn’t arrived, she squatted by the water and splashed her face, trying to wash away the tear stains.
’I will not cry.’
’So what if he was my faith, the light of my life?’
’He destroyed all the beautiful things he gave me with his own hands. He’s not worthy of your love anymore.’
’From this moment on, Serena, you must stop loving him.’
’Just give up!’
Struggling to suppress the overwhelming emotions, Serena bent down again, cupping water from the river to splash on her face.
Suddenly, Sylvia’s smug chuckle echoed from behind her.
"Serena, it feels terrible to be betrayed by the man you love, doesn’t it?"
Serena’s hands, submerged in the river, froze. A sudden blaze of fury flared through her.
Before she could say a word, Sylvia walked over to the river’s edge beside her and continued,
"Whatever you’re feeling now, that’s what I felt when I learned he got married.
"He was my fiancé. My man. And just because I was abroad for a few years, he married you."
Seeing Serena still squatting, Sylvia crouched down beside her, staring at her. "Tell me, isn’t Ethan a total scumbag?"
Serena remained silent, still squatting, her eyes vacant as she stared at the rushing river before her.
Sylvia suddenly burst into wild laughter. "HAHAHA... But no matter how much of a scumbag Ethan is, countless women would still throw themselves at him. And that includes you.
"You’re just a twenty-year-old girl. Didn’t you marry Ethan just because he’s rich?"
She lunged, grabbing Serena, her demeanor suddenly becoming unhinged.
"I offered you money! Why didn’t you take it? Ten million! With ten million, you could have any man you want! Why do you have to fight me for him?
"Don’t you know it’s because of him that I can never have children? He has to spend the rest of his life making it up to me! He has to!"
Serena shoved the crazed Sylvia away, taking a step back and yelling at her,
"Whatever is between you and Ethan is none of my business! I told you, I’ll divorce him! As long as he agrees, I’m ready to leave at any time."
"Will you leave?"
Sylvia’s eyes grew red.
Serena felt as if her heart had already died. She nodded. "I will. As long as he signs the divorce papers."
"But he won’t let you leave."
Sylvia let out another shrill laugh. "HAHAHA... But Ethan loves you! He won’t let you leave! HAHAHAHA..."
She was like a madwoman, standing there talking and laughing, until her laughter dissolved into tears.
Serena stared at her.
For some reason, she felt a pang of empathy.
But she refused to believe Sylvia’s words.
’He would never love me.’
’If he loved me, he wouldn’t hurt me over and over again.’
’He didn’t love me. Not one bit.’
Filled with despair, Serena didn’t want to spend another second with someone like Sylvia. She turned to leave.
Sylvia watched her back, a sinister smile twisting her lips. She bent down and hefted a heavy stone, several pounds at least, and snarled through gritted teeth,
"It’s all because of you! As long as you exist, Ethan won’t marry me! Serena Yardley, just die!"
The moment the words left her mouth, she brought the heavy rock crashing down on the back of Serena’s head.
CRACK.
Serena felt a thunderous blow to the back of her head.
She froze, her body going rigid before collapsing heavily onto the smooth river stones below.
As she hit the ground, with her last shred of consciousness, she lifted her gaze to glare venomously at Sylvia, who stood watching her.
’This woman...’
’...she’s so deranged she’s actually trying to kill me.’
Serena refused to accept it.
She tried to get up.
But her head... it hurt so much.
She couldn’t get up, couldn’t move at all.
She could feel blood gushing from the wound like an open tap, soaking the back of her clothes.
The pain was unbearable.
She felt herself slipping away.
At this moment, as her life neared its end, she thought of the child she had lost.
’Am I going to be with my child now?’
’That might be for the best. At least my baby won’t be lonely anymore.’
’Baby, Mommy’s coming to be with you.’
Serena gave up the will to live, lying there, resigned to her fate.
Crystalline tears slid from the corners of her bloodshot eyes, and then, slowly, they fluttered shut.
Sylvia approached her, laughing like a madwoman. "HAHAHA... With you dead, Ethan will be all mine! HAHAHA..."
When her laughter subsided, she showed no sign of recognizing the wrongness of her actions.
Instead, she calmly and collectedly began to clean up the crime scene. She even dragged Serena’s small, thin body and hurled it into the turbulent river, letting the current carry her away.
That way, even if Ethan sent people to find her, all they would discover was a cold, lifeless body.
HAHAHA...
This was the price for crossing Sylvia Schuyler.
