Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Serena Yardley’s Suicide Note

By the time Ethan Yardley and his company entourage finished their inspection and returned to the parking lot, it was already 7:00 PM.

They were planning to grab a quick dinner at a nearby farmhouse restaurant before driving back to Alcrest overnight.

But when Ethan got into the car, he found it empty and couldn’t help but scan his surroundings.

Still not seeing the person he was looking for, he instructed Yannick Young, who was beside him, "Give Serena a call."

Yannick Young took out his phone and dialed Serena Yardley’s number.

The call went through, but no one answered.

After several consecutive calls with the same result, Yannick Young looked at the CEO. "Sir, Miss Serena isn’t picking up."

Ethan Yardley pulled out his own phone to call her himself.

He knew she was angry.

But being angry was one thing; now that it was getting dark, she should have returned to the car to go back with everyone.

’If we leave, who’s she going to go back with out here in the middle of nowhere?’

Ethan’s call also went through, but it too went unanswered.

A sudden, ominous premonition washed over him. He got out of the car and ordered Yannick Young,

"Go search the surrounding area. See if there are any villagers nearby, check if she might have gone to a villager’s house to rest."

"Yes, sir."

Yannick Young quickly called over two other men to go search with him.

Ethan remembered that Sylvia Schuyler hadn’t gone with them on the inspection. He walked over to the car where she was sitting and asked, "Have you seen Serena Yardley?"

Sylvia feigned waking up groggily, frowning at the man outside her car. "What did you say?"

"Serena Yardley. Have you seen her?"

Sylvia quickly shook her head, calmly saying without batting an eye,

"No, I haven’t. I came straight back here after we split up, and I’ve been here ever since. I haven’t seen Serena! What’s wrong?"

Ethan fell silent.

’Sylvia hasn’t seen her either. So where on earth did she run off to?’

As the sky began to darken, Ethan grew increasingly uneasy.

He ordered the other executives, "Everyone, get out of the cars and search the mountain. None of you are going back until you find Serena Yardley."

The boss’s harsh command startled all the executives, assistants, and drivers in the cars. They all got out, discussing among themselves in utter confusion.

"Who’s missing?"

"Who’s gone?"

"Who is Serena Yardley?"

Someone explained, "She’s the girl who came with the CEO."

"About this tall, petite, very pretty. The one we ran into at the company entrance."

A vague memory seemed to surface among the crowd. Seeing how worried their boss was, they figured she must be very important to him.

No one dared to speculate further. They all hurried into the mountains to search for her.

Ethan raised his arm and glanced at his watch. It was 7:10 PM. He and Serena had separated at just 3:30 PM.

’How many hours has it been? She better not have gotten into any trouble.’

He was clearly bothered by her earlier actions.

But now that he had brought her out to the mountains and she’d gone missing, he was frantic with worry.

Unable to just stand there and wait, Ethan prepared to go look for her himself.

Sylvia suddenly called out to him, "Ethan, Serena is an adult. She should know how to protect herself. Maybe she went back on her own?"

Ethan stopped in his tracks. After a moment’s thought, he dialed Quinn Gardner’s number.

The call was quickly answered, and he spoke hurriedly, "Quinn, have your wife stake out my house. See when that woman gets home."

"Which woman?" Quinn Gardner asked deliberately.

Ethan was so anxious he was about to lose it. "Go watch and see when Serena Yardley gets home! If she arrives, call me back immediately."

"Oh? You sound awfully rushed. Did something happen again?"

"Why are you asking so many damn questions? Just call me back the second you see her."

Not wanting to waste any more time, Ethan hung up.

While he was waiting for Quinn’s call back, Sylvia got out of the car and came to his side.

"Ethan, Serena’s a grown woman. Logically, she shouldn’t be this much trouble, and she shouldn’t be so thoughtless as to make so many people wait for her, right? Do you think something might have happened to her?"

’Happened to her?’

Ethan’s heart lurched. That terrible premonition grew stronger.

So strong that even his breathing became ragged.

’Nothing’s happened.’

’She’s a twenty-year-old adult. How could anything happen to her?’

But when he remembered her reaction when she’d left him earlier, Ethan found it impossible to stop worrying.

He remembered how Serena used to cry and throw a tantrum whenever he did anything with Sylvia.

But she hadn’t done that this time.

Not only was she completely calm, but she had even smiled and said he and Sylvia were a perfect match.

’She wouldn’t have suppressed her pain and done something foolish while she was away from me, would she?’

Ethan seemed to recall something she had once said to him.

’If you want my life, you can have it.’

’Could she really have...’

At that thought, Ethan could no longer stand still. He strode quickly into the mountains to join the search.

As he searched, he abandoned all pretense of composure and shouted, "Serena Yardley! Serena Yardley, get out here!"

’She can’t be hurt.’

’I waited so long for her to grow up. I went to so much trouble to lay a trap for her, to bind her to my side. How could anything happen to her now?’

Ethan was truly panicking now. He stood at the foot of the mountain, shouting at the top of his lungs like a man possessed, "Serena Yardley! Be good and stop fooling around! Come out, and I’ll take you home! Serena Yardley..."

But his calls didn’t bring her out. Instead, he saw two of his subordinates hurrying toward him from a distance.

Ethan froze on the spot, an unprecedented wave of panic rising in his heart.

He was afraid.

Afraid they were coming to tell him something he couldn’t bear to hear.

He struggled to compose himself. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

The two drivers rushed to Ethan’s side, holding Serena Yardley’s phone. "Sir," one of them said breathlessly, "we didn’t find Miss Serena, but we found a phone by the river."

"What?"

Shocked, Ethan took the phone from the driver with a trembling hand.

It was undoubtedly Serena’s phone.

And the screen still showed the missed calls he had just made.

He swiped the screen to unlock it, and a memo filled his vision.

[Uncle, thank you for taking care of me all these years. I’m repaying my debt to you. Please, let me go.

The truth is, I don’t like you at all. If it weren’t for the fact that you could provide for me, I really wouldn’t want to be with you.

Actually, there has always been someone I loved in my heart, but that person died at your hands.

I hate you. I can’t stand to be by your side for another moment.

After I die, leave me alone. Even if you can’t rest until you find my body, please don’t take it away.

I quite like it here in the mountains. Just let me rest here for eternity.

Farewell forever, Uncle...]

...

After reading the contents of the memo with bloodshot eyes, Ethan felt as if his heart had stopped beating.

He stood there, frozen, for a long, long time.

’His Serena.’

’The Serena he had never once wanted to push away.’

’She was so optimistic, so lively, so cheerful and always smiling.’

’She had said she loved him, that she never wanted to leave him.’

’So how could she have been driven to take her own life?’

Ethan didn’t believe it.

He didn’t believe Serena would be foolish enough to commit suicide.

No matter how much of a bastard he, Ethan Yardley, had been, no matter how unforgivable his actions were, how could she punish him with death?

Dazed, Ethan snapped back to reality, violently grabbing the man beside him and screaming, completely breaking down, "Where did you find the phone? Take me there!"
