Snowstorm: I'm Super Rich in the Apocalypse-Chapter 348: New Variety of Satiety Food
Chapter 348: Chapter 348: New Variety of Satiety Food
After planting, Chen Lang and Meng Meng came over, each wearing a safety helmet made by Chen Shaonan and dressed in thick wind and rain-proof coats.
They had visited these few houses before; there weren’t any issues. They were just young and quite active. They took turns visiting these houses but weren’t a nuisance, they just talked in the living room and didn’t touch anything.
Gu Pan gave each of them a piece of chocolate. "Are the sweet potatoes planted at both your houses?"
Chen Lang nodded. "Yeah, I don’t know if they will taste good. If they were sweet potatoes, I would still like them."
Meng Meng added, "I love baked sweet potatoes the most. I remember having it once when I was little, it was sweet."
Her memories weren’t very clear; she was young back then, and it had been a long time ago.
Gu Pan patted Meng Meng’s hair. "These might not taste as good as the ones you had when you were little because this is a different variety. Normal plants need sunlight, air, water, and a long growing period. But these grow too fast because we need to fill our stomachs at the base, so they lose some nutrients and flavor."
This wasn’t to dishearten the children, but rather not to let their expectations be too high and end up disappointed, as previously, Lu Jianguo had told them that these were poor in taste, and just enough to satiate hunger with not much nutrition.
Now, explaining the principle to them, she also let them know these things weren’t just for taste but for survival.
Meng Meng nodded vaguely. "Dad said that there is not enough food at the base now. We are just drinking porridge at home and not eating solid food."
Chen Lang asked Gu Pan, "Sis, if we really can’t find food, are we going to eat mutated animals?"
Gu Pan smiled and had them sit on the sofa. "First of all, it’s not certain that animals have mutated; secondly, we have stored food outside, so we won’t be without food."
Chen Lang still looked worried. "But our food can’t be stored for many years. What if it goes bad?"
Gu Pan was confident about this since her Space kept food fresh, but others didn’t know. Probably Chen Shaonan and Duan Shumei had mentioned this worry before, so Chen Lang had heard about it.
"Don’t worry, we will store the food properly. Plus, the base is still developing food. This sweet potato is an example. It might not taste good, but it fills you up, right? There will definitely be other options, so don’t worry about it." Gu Pan couldn’t say much more, she could only comfort them this way.
Chen Lang nodded. "That’s right, the base always has a plan."
Gu Pan smiled while looking at them. "Let the adults worry about these things. You kids shouldn’t think too much about it."
Chen Lang reluctantly looked at Gu Pan. "Sis, I’m already an adult. Why do you still treat me like a child?"
It wasn’t Gu Pan’s fault, as she knew them when Chen Lang was still a child. Moreover, after the tornado incident, they suffered a lot, making them look skinny and even more child-like.
Meng Meng also said, "I am also a big kid now. I have even killed someone."
Gu Pan thought about what Guo Gang had told her about their arrival and indeed felt sorry for Meng Meng. A ten-year-old child, who had killed someone. If it weren’t for the apocalypse, she would have just been starting elementary school.
Adults who kill often have psychological shadows, let alone a child. She had endured more than ordinary people could imagine.
Fortunately, Guo Gang was a military man and knew how to guide a child.
Actually, many people were psychologically affected at this time. Under unavoidable circumstances, where it was a matter of life and death, killing was inevitable, but many people, having grown up in peacetime, couldn’t accept the idea of killing and easily developed trauma.
She patted Meng Meng’s hair. "We are all tough people, so being together, we can surely overcome the apocalypse."
Guo Gang had more experience than her in this regard.
Meng Meng nodded. "Yeah, I also think so. On the way here, many people died, many cities were empty, but we still made it to the base, so we can definitely survive."
Her father had told her all this, making her aware that society had become a man-eat-man environment. Though it was safe inside the base, the outside was still a wolf’s den, so she always felt a sense of crisis.
Lu Ruisheng poured them orange juice. "Let’s not get too melancholy. Have some orange juice to boost your vitamins."
He had overheard their conversation and felt the topic was too depressing; having said enough, he poured them orange juice.
The two thanked Lu Ruisheng and happily started drinking the orange juice.
Gu Pan also took a sip. "It’s really sweet."
Lu Ruisheng laughed. "I made it, of course it’s sweet." ƒree𝑤ebnσvel-com
Chen Lang held his forehead. "Oh God, I have to deal with dog food again."
Meng Meng asked innocently, "Brother Chen Lang, where is the dog food?"
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng also laughed. If it weren’t for the apocalypse, would they have had children by now?
Who knows? Although they hadn’t thought about this before, as their life had always been go with the flow, the apocalypse had undoubtedly changed their life’s trajectory. Not wanting to and unable to were two different things.
The next day, Lu Jianguo returned, looking very serious.
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng sensed it might be about those mutated animals, likely bad news.
Indeed, as Lu Jianguo sat down and rubbed his hands, "The days ahead might be even tougher."
Gu Pan asked, "Is it because those animals have mutated?"
Lu Jianguo nodded. "Yes, except for that barrel of fish; we are still uncertain and need to observe more. All the rest have shown mutated genes. So today, I need you to sketch out where the fish are located to send people to bring them back."
Gu Pan quickly took a pencil and paper and handed them to Lu Ruisheng, who was skilled in drawing.
Lu Ruisheng drew the map, marking the precise locations and landmarks along the way.
After Lu Jianguo memorized everything, he cautioned, "Don’t just eat anything. Right now, we can be sure the deep well water at the base is safe, and the base’s stored grain, fast-growing sweet potatoes, and algae are safe. But for the rest, I’m not sure now. Though we don’t know if these contaminated foods are harmful to the human body, they are definitely different from the usual, so don’t eat them until we have data proving they’re safe."
More time was needed to examine and verify whether those mutated animals were harmful to humans, so not eating them was the safest option.
Gu Pan typically didn’t eat outside food, so she quickly nodded in agreement, "Got it, Dad. We’ll be careful."
After speaking, she went to the kitchen and took out a small bag of millet for Lu Jianguo. "Dad, you be careful too. This rice is safe; take it and eat."
Lu Jianguo declined, "As the Base Commander, many people monitor what I eat. If I eat this, people might think I’m corrupt."
