Sons of a devil-Chapter 66: the tension
Chapter 66 - the tension
The fire crackled softly in the silence of the makeshift camp. Trees surrounded them like ancient watchers, and above them, stars blinked through a quiet sky that had seen too much.
Selene stirred from her sleep.
Cain was by her side instantly, brushing the strands of hair from her face, his thumb grazing her cheek as though afraid she might disappear.
"You're safe," he whispered. "You did it."
Selene's eyes fluttered open. They were still glowing faintly, gold fading back into brown. "Did we win?"
Cain smiled, exhaustion and admiration in his gaze. "You saved us."
From the other side of the camp, Leo stirred. "And nearly gave us a heart attack."
Eren appeared beside him with a bowl of soup, plopping down with no grace whatsoever. "Ten out of ten. Very flashy. Not sure about the aftershocks though—my ribs still hurt."
Selene gave a tired laugh.
Cain shook his head fondly. "They're idiots. But you probably knew that."
"Absolutely," Selene whispered, eyes glinting.
Later that night, Leo sat with Eren, sharpening his blade.
"You noticed how Selene just snapped like that? That power—it felt ancient. Like mom's," Leo muttered.
"She's special," Eren replied, mouth full of dried meat. "And now Cain's extra protective."
Leo gave a smirk. "They're kinda cute. Gross. But cute."
Behind them, Cain and Selene sat on a log, wrapped in a thick blanket. The silence between them wasn't awkward—it was peace.
"I was scared," Selene admitted softly.
Cain looked at her. "You didn't look it."
"I was. Not of the fight. Of losing... this. You."
Cain reached out and took her hand, lacing their fingers together. "You're not losing me, Selene. Not in this lifetime. Not even in hell."
She leaned against his shoulder. "Then promise me we'll survive this war."
Cain pressed a kiss to her temple. "We will. Even if I have to burn everything to keep you safe."
Just before dawn, Eren jolted awake.
He wasn't sure what stirred him—the cold? A dream?
No. Something was wrong.
He looked to the edge of the forest. The trees were swaying—but there was no wind.
And then he saw them.
Three cloaked figures. Watching. Silent.
His hand reached instinctively for his weapon.
One of the figures raised a bony hand—and a raven flew from their shoulder, soaring high above the forest.
A message.
They vanished in a blink.
Eren told Cain and Leo immediately.
"They were scouts," Cain said, already throwing on his coat. "Our father knows where we are."
Leo cursed. "We can't stay."
Selene was already packing supplies. "Then let's move."
They traveled silently for hours, deeper into the woods, toward the edge of the Eastern Cliffs. Along the way, Cain took Selene's hand in his and didn't let go.
Behind them, Eren walked beside Leo, voice quiet.
"You think it's time to tell them?" he asked.
Leo's jaw clenched. "About what mom said?"
"Yeah."
Leo hesitated. Then nodded.
Soon, they'd all need to know the truth

A Mother's Secret
As they settled again that evening, Leo stood and faced Cain and Selene.
"There's something you need to hear," he began. "About our powers. About mom. And... about the real reason we were born."
Selene looked at Cain, heart pounding.
The wind picked up again—different this time. Like a breath before a scream.
And in the farthest shadows, a pair of glowing red eyes blinked open.
Here is the continuation of Chapter 67 from Sons of a Devil, picking up right where the tension begins rising after Leo reveals there's more to their origin—and Selene's connection to it.
Leo stood before the group like a commander before a war council, his hands clenched and voice lower than usual. Eren stood beside him, unusually silent, offering quiet support.
Cain narrowed his eyes. "What are you not telling us?"
"It's about why we have these powers," Leo said. "About why we're... different. Even from each other."
Eren chimed in. "Our powers were never random. They were chosen. Crafted. For a purpose."
Selene leaned forward slightly. "Chosen by who?"
"Our mother," Leo said. "And our father. But mostly... the prophecy."
Selene's eyes widened. "What prophecy?"
Cain looked visibly tense, as if dreading the words. "You mean the Bloodbind Prophecy? I thought that was just a myth."
"It's not," Leo said. "We were born to stop a war... or start one."
The fire cracked. Even the trees seemed to fall into stillness.
"Our mother bound a piece of her light into us," Eren added, "to counteract Father's darkness. That's why our powers feel so different from his. We're part-devil... and part-her."
"And Selene?" Cain asked, his voice sharp. Protective.
Leo turned to her, his expression unreadable. "That's the part we didn't understand. Until Mom woke up fully... and remembered."
Selene's heart pounded in her chest. "What did she remember?"
Leo looked directly at her. "That your powers are from the same source. You're not just one of us, Selene. You're a key."
Selene took a step back, shaken. "A... key?"
Cain moved between them. "Explain."
"She's the one who can awaken the Gate," Leo said. "The prison our father was locked in. Either to destroy him... or set him free."
Silence fell.
Selene looked down at her hands. She remembered the golden light that burst from her chest, the way the forest shook when she screamed.
"That's why he's hunting me," she whispered. "He wants to use me."
Cain wrapped his arms around her protectively. "He won't get you. I won't let him."
Leo nodded. "We need to stick together now more than ever."
From behind them, Eren sighed loudly. "Sooo... we're basically cursed babies born for cosmic war. Awesome."
That broke the tension slightly. Selene chuckled, though her eyes were still wet. Leo shook his head. "Idiot."
"Emotional support crackhead," Eren said, grinning and nudging Selene's shoulder. "It's on my resume."
They all laughed—softly, tiredly—but it felt real. Even in the midst of chaos, they had this.
Selene couldn't sleep. The weight of truth pressed on her chest like stones.
She walked alone, just to breathe. Cain noticed, of course.
He followed her, arms wrapping around her from behind. "You okay?"
"I'm not even sure who I am anymore," she whispered.
"You're Selene," he said, nuzzling into her hair. "The girl who kicked my ass. The one who makes me feel human. The one I—"
He paused.
Selene turned around, facing him. "Say it."
Cain brushed a strand of hair from her face, his voice a broken whisper. "The one I love."
She stared, heart in her throat. "Cain..."
He leaned in and kissed her, soft but full of emotion. A promise in silence.
Selene melted into him.
From beyond the cliffs, a deep howl echoed. Not from a wolf. Something older. Something angry.
Cain broke the kiss, eyes sharpening. "They're coming."
Selene held his hand. "Then let them. We'll be ready."
The storm was coming.
But this time, they would not run.
