Chapter 58: Leave It To Me.

The door of the war room swung shut behind them, and Ethan rolled his shoulders, exhaling

slowly. His mind was already racing ahead—calculating possibilities, imagining beasts pouring

through shattered gates, blood splashing against white walls.

He barely got two steps down the corridor before Alina Fairwind practically flew up beside him.

"So, Ethan, hey, so what was it like fighting Vandelion, huh?" she said, bouncing on her toes as

she kept pace with him. "I heard he’s so fast he can blink behind you. Did he talk to you? Did he

try to recruit you? Wait, wait—do you have a favorite snack? I’m partial to honey buns, personally."

Ethan cut her a sideways glance. "I... what?"

Alina kept talking without missing a beat. "I mean, if you fought him, you’ve gotta be ridiculously

strong, right? Or maybe you’re just super lucky. Ooooh, are you secretly a prince? Wait—no, I bet

you’re from a fallen noble house. Or a cursed bloodline. Or—"

"Alina," Ethan interjected calmly, "can we save the twenty questions for after the beast horde’s

not trying to smash our city to bits?"

She blinked, then puffed out her cheeks in a pout. "Booo. You’re no fun."

Corvin Drake had joined them by then, his steps silent. He fell in beside Ethan, arms folded,

expression unreadable. He said nothing at first, just gave Alina a look as if trying to decide

whether he’d stepped into a circus.

They exited the Knight Quarters, emerging into the bright sun. The wind carried the faint metallic

tang of distant blood.

Ethan squinted at the horizon, speaking crisply. "We’ll head straight for the west gate."

Corvin snorted. "West gate, huh? Fine."

He shoved his hands into his pockets and shot Ethan a disdainful look. "But tell me something

first."

Ethan arched a brow. "Yeah?"

Corvin glared. "Why are you our leader? You don’t look like shit. You’re just some random guy

who showed up and suddenly you’re giving orders? I bet you’re trash. Don’t get cocky because

you fought Vandelion once."

Alina’s eyes widened, and she elbowed Corvin hard in the ribs. "Hey! Don’t be mean! Maybe

there’s a reason Ethan’s our leader. Selene must trust him if she put him in charge."

Corvin scoffed. "Or she’s desperate. I don’t trust him. He’s a nobody to me."

Ethan gave a slow exhale, then offered a faint, patient smile. "You’re free to do whatever you

want, Corvin. I’m not here to convince you."

Corvin frowned deeper. "Tch."

Alina giggled. "Wow, Ethan, you’re so chill. That’s kind of cool."

Ethan didn’t reply. His eyes were focused far ahead, his strides lengthening as they wound

through the busy city streets. The bells were ringing louder now, echoing off marble buildings like

a war drum.

Alina tried to chatter at him a few more times, but he answered only in brief grunts, his gaze

distant.

And so they walked in tense silence until the towering white walls of the western gate came into

view.

Soldiers bustled along the battlements. Shouts rang out. The thick scent of beast blood drifted on

the wind.

From atop the wall, a grizzled knight in battered silver armor waved frantically as Ethan’s group

approached.

"Ho there! More knights? From the inner city?" he called down, voice ragged with exhaustion.

Ethan shaded his eyes. "Yes. We’re from the headquarters. Reinforcements."

The gate groaned open just enough for the knights to slip inside. Once through, Ethan was

immediately surrounded by a unit of haggard defenders, all of them with sweat and grime

streaking their faces. The older knight dropped down from the wall, practically stumbling toward

Ethan.

"Praise the Light," he rasped, grabbing Ethan’s hand and shaking it hard enough to rattle his arm.

"Commander Jared Orwin. Third Battalion. We’ve been holding this gate for hours. I thought we

were all dead men."

Ethan offered a tight grin, gripping Jared’s hand firmly. "Don’t worry. We’re here now."

Jared’s eyes were wild, darting from Ethan to Alina and Corvin. "How many more men behind

you?"

Ethan shook his head. "No one else. Just us three."

Jared froze. "...Three? You’re joking."

Ethan met his stare evenly. "I don’t joke about city sieges."

Corvin let out a disgusted scoff. "See? I told you this guy’s a lunatic."

Alina merely waved both arms. "Don’t worry, Sir Jared! Ethan’s super strong. Probably. I think."

Jared ran a trembling hand through his gray hair. "Three knights... gods above... we’ll be

overrun." freewebnøvel_com

Ethan turned and stepped closer to the gate slit, peering outside.

Beyond the city walls stretched an ocean of monsters. Wolves with pitch-black fur and glowing

red eyes snarled, clawing at the earth. Massive boars stomped and bellowed, their tusks warped

into jagged crimson blades. Even birds circled overhead—ravens with feathers dripping with an

oily black ooze.

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

Same crimson glow as the Golem’s core. Whoever’s behind this... they’re not subtle.

He spoke briskly. "We’ll handle it."

Jared blinked. "You’ll handle—?"

Ethan pointed firmly toward the mass of beasts outside the gate. "Here’s how we’ll play this.

Corvin, Alina—you’re taking the left flank. Spread out, keep them from pushing in along the wall.

I’ll handle the right side—and the front—alone."

Corvin’s eyes widened, incredulous. "Alone?! Are you trying to get yourself killed?"

Alina tilted her head, frowning. "Ethan, that’s nuts. There’s... there’s hundreds of monsters out

there."

Ethan drew Warlord’s Fang in a smooth hiss of steel, black shadows unfurling around the blade

like living smoke. His eyes shone with a faint violet gleam as he tilted his head, cracking his neck.

"Trust me. It’ll be faster this way."

Jared sputtered. "Faster?!"

Corvin took a step closer, voice low and bitter. "If you die, we’re screwed. You know that, right?"

Ethan just flashed him a cool grin. "Then don’t let me die."

Alina giggled nervously. "Ooooh, I like him already."

Jared swallowed hard. "Gods help us all."

Outside, the roars of the beasts grew louder. Claws scraped at stone. The gates shuddered under

repeated impacts. Ethan’s smile faded, replaced by a cold, focused look.

"Alright," he said softly. "Let’s show whoever’s behind this that Calsoz isn’t going down today."

He pointed his sword toward the gates.

"Open it."
