SSS Demon King System: The Rise of a Dying Extra-Chapter 8: Magic Lessons.
A couple of days passed after Lloyd’s conversation with Sebastian.
In that time, the boy had recovered some health. Sebastian had also brought him medicines, so Lloyd had also been cured of some illnesses.
With his condition now stable, Lloyd decided it was time to start the investigation. Dressed in a heavy but warm cloak, Lloyd headed toward the library.
The mansion was quite large, but thanks to the vague memories he had of the place, he was able to find the library with relative ease.
"Wow!"
The boy was impressed upon opening the room. While it wasn’t as large as a public library, it was certainly good for a personal library.
The young man began his search. With the large number of books there were, he’d surely take a while to find what he was looking for, but he wasn’t in a hurry either.
"Oh, young master! What are you doing here? If you wanted a book from the library, you only had to let me know," said a voice.
Lloyd gave a look to whoever was speaking to him. It was his "savior," who thanks to the Eye of Envy he knew was named Lucia.
"Don’t worry, I came here of my own accord; I need to learn to move around on my own," the boy explained.
"Still..." the girl seemed to be in a dilemma, after all she knew Lloyd’s condition, but it was also true that seeing him outside his room was hopeful. "I understand, are you looking for something specific? Since I’m the one who normally cleans this room, I know how the library is organized."
"I see. Could you give me everything you have on the basics of magic?"
"Magic? Oh, no problem," the woman responded. Lloyd knew why she was confused; the truth was that someone without the ability to create magical power would never be able to use magic, so reading about something you can’t do sounded depressing.
The young man sat down to wait. In a couple of minutes, Lucia returned with a large pile of books, placing them on the table effortlessly. It was surprising that she had so much strength, but in turn, that world was "fantasy," so he shouldn’t be surprised.
"Phew, I think that’s everything," the woman sat across from Lloyd. "If you’re interested in magic, I can help. While I’m not a mage, I’ve heard some things at another mansion where I worked."
"That would be very helpful," the young man commented, though a doubt came to his head. "You worked as a maid somewhere else? I didn’t know that."
"Yes, I was hired as a servant in a wizard’s tower a few years ago. I think they were investigating some ruins or something like that, sorry, I don’t remember much more than that, hehe," the young woman explained, emitting an adorable laugh.
For the first time, Lloyd noticed how astonishingly beautiful Lucia was. Her straight black hair was pulled back in a bun, though Lloyd was sure it would look better with her hair down. And her eyes? They were a deep black, giving her face an enigmatic touch.
Lloyd was entranced for a moment, but returned to reality a few seconds later.
If it weren’t for his current state, Lloyd would have appreciated the girl’s beauty much more; however, his illness was his constant center of attention, so he didn’t stop to enjoy other things.
"Mmm, is something wrong? You haven’t stopped staring at me," she commented, confused.
Lloyd refrained from saying something flirtatious; after all, he was trapped in the corpse of an eight-year-old boy, and he’d probably only make her feel uncomfortable.
"It’s nothing, you can instruct me if you wish," Lloyd responded, now attentive.
"Great!" she exclaimed enthusiastically. "Well, I don’t remember much, but I know some basics. Apparently, magic is something unique that not everyone can do. We inhabitants of Avalon can, thanks to our root, which allows us to produce magical power," the young woman paused. Seeing that Lloyd was following her, she continued with her explanation. "Magic can be learned with effort, using spells that over time are assimilated until developing the ability to do magic without incantation. Although it’s true you need studies to use magic, there’s also innate magic, which usually develops over time hereditarily, or you can also be born with innate magic from birth. For example, I’m a rare case of innate magic, though I can’t do anything impressive with it either."
"Really? That’s surprising, what magic can you use?" Lloyd asked, interested.
"Well, my magic is called hypnosis, though my small amount of magical power means anyone with certain mental resistance or Touki isn’t affected," she said somewhat embarrassed.
Lloyd, however, shook his head.
"I think it’s wonderful magic. Even if you can’t affect someone if they resist, you could also use it for beneficial purposes."
"Beneficial?"
"Yes, for example, if someone has trauma, they could forget it, or you could even cure some illnesses by tricking the brain."
"Tricking the brain?" the young woman opened her eyes, unsure of what he was talking about.
"Yes, it would be like a placebo effect. The brain believes you’re fine, so you improve; long term it can be very beneficial. Well, you could also prevent people from feeling pain. Yes, your magic could help a lot of people."
"Hahaha, wow, thank you, I hadn’t seen it that way."
The girl responded cheerfully, though deep down she knew that anyone who used sacred arts could help much more than her.
However, she didn’t want to say anything either; after all, Lloyd was in a much worse situation. Being only a child, he was already much more positive than her, which was progress.
[-50 V.P • You tried to make someone feel better without seeking anything in return. You strayed from your goal]
"Huh?" Lloyd’s expression became somber upon hearing that. The V.P. that cost him so much to earn were evaporating just for a comment he made.
The boy sighed. He’d have to complete the side mission to recover the lost V.P.
