Chapter 8: The Purple Nova Syndicate

"The entire scene was captured by a police drone moments before it was destroyed in an explosion. Law enforcement authorities denies having any ties to this mysterious man which leaves the question, who is this masked man? And is he a friend of foe?"

Inside an isolated warehouse, three men stood near a worn out sofa where a man in a black suit sat calmly, watching the morning news. The one in the center was the leader of the robbers, and he dropped to one knee, and lowered in silence before the suited man.

"My deepest apologies, we have failed to retrieve the Core."

"You stupid insolent hoodlums! Do you have any idea what you have done!" A voice shouted from behind the sofa. The robbers turned their head, and two individuals behind the sofa, a man and a woman with a tablet in hand, both dressed in spotless lab coats.

"Calm down Mr Simon, there’s no need to lash out just yet." The man in the black suit spoke calmly as he rose to his feet, stepping toward the leader of the robbers.

"It was a simple job, all I want to know is how you got stopped, not by the police, but by a clown in a $2 nose mask." The man’s voice dropped, and itt was obvious he wasn’t going to let this slide.

The robbers instantly felt the weight of his presence pressing down on them. He wasn’t just annoyed, he was furious.

"My deepest apologies s-"

POW!

In the blink of an eye, the man in the suit drove his shin into the leader’s chest. The impact sent him flying backward, and he spat blood from his mouth as he crashed into the wall with a force that seemed almost superhuman.

"I don’t pay millions for you to be sorry." The man turned to the remaining two robbers, and his eyes flared with murderous intent. He looked ready to end their lives without a second thought.

"Ahem, as much as I’d like to savor this moment, we don’t have much time." The woman in the lab coat stepped in, cutting his beatdown short.

"What is it Dr Helen?"

"We required your men to capture both the van and the core because the van is the reactor of the core. Now that the core has been separated from it’s reactor, it’s become highly unstable."

"You’re telling me that a power source powerful enough to destroy this entire city has gone unstable? You stupid idiots!" With a swift strike to the jaw, he dropped the remaining robbers, and left them sprawled beside their leader.

"Not exactly, Upon contact with H₂O, the core undergoes a rapid thermal exchange, effectively reducing its temperature and stabilizing its critical state. So while it’s submerged, the core isn’t critical, but if it’s not reunited with it’s reactor, there’s no telling what will happen."

"I see." The man sank back into the sofa, crossing one leg over the other as his expression settled into its usual calm. "How long before it goes critical?"

"By my estimates, 30 hours from now."

"That’s good news, alright then, you three imbeciles still have a chance to redeem yourself, find that core and bring it to me before the night ends, or I’ll kill you, am I understood?"

"Understood sir." The leader coughed out his response as he rose to his feet, his men followed him immediately before they turned and left the warehouse.

"Wouldn’t it be more effective to send your men to retrieve the reactor and it’s core?" Dr. Helen asked, her tone heavy with disappointment over the failed robbery.

"With the arrest of the Borian Crime Syndicate in the upper faction and the boss still in Japan, we cannot operate carelessly, forcing me to hire the likes of petty robbers. Besides it’s not the style of the Purple Nova Syndicate, we have... Much bigger agendas than stealing cars."

"Hmph." Dr. Helen scoffed and walked out of the warehouse with her associate following closely behind her.

The man turned his attention back to the television, eyes fixed on the paused image of the hooded, masked figure, captured just seconds before the drone’s destruction. "So now we have to deal with low budget Miles Morales huh?"

The Convention

Starcore Delta’s Debriefing Room

2:00PM

Inside the command center of Starcore Delta — The convention, was a bright, busy room filled with large screens, glowing panels, and officers moving from station to station. Maps of galaxies and mission reports floated in the air as holograms, giving the place a constant sense of motion.

An agent walked in through the main doors, just returning from an off-world mission. Her uniforms was dusty, and she looked tired but relieved. He headed across the room toward the briefing platform, ready to give her report and finally rest.

"Welcome back Agent Alpha." A man stood in front of her as she walked in through the door. He was the head commander of Starcore Delta, Head Commander Livinus.

"Congratulations on a job well done, I hope your happy? You’ve successfully averted an alien invasion."

Victoria Stones — Codename: Agent Alpha.

She was a woman of average height, but the same couldn’t be said about her body. She wore a sleek, blue latex uniform that hugged her tightly at her large breasts, curvaceous hips, and large butt.

She is an intergalactic agent of Starcore Delta, and also the designated leader of team Alpha. And for a good reason.

Her records spoke for herself, according to the rankings, she was among the Starcore Delta’s top agents. Amongst her notable achievements, preventing a largce scale invasion from Mars was one of her greatest.

"No, it wasn’t just me sir, we are all part of the same team. I couldn’t have stopped it without my teammates." She said modestly, despite being the biggest contributor.

"Whatever the case, it was a job well done. Considering all you’ve been through, you can submit your report tomorrow. You can go home and rest now, hero of earth."

"Thank you head commander." She said with a contagious smile, with the way she felt, and the state she was in after that mission, she definitely needed that rest.

Victoria turned around to leave, but her eyes quickly caught the holographic screen beside her. She paused as the bright image sharpened, showing a news broadcast playing across the whole of Nova city.

"A vigilante?" She said loud enough for the commander to hear.

"Hm? Oh, that’s right. It seems Nova city has a new vigilante running around stopping armed thugs." The commander said, punching in a series of keys in the supercomputer on his table.

"Interesting, so it’s come to that?" It wasn’t much of a bother, until she saw the clip of the chase, and her eyes widened.

The guns the robbers used, the high tech pulse waves that the vigilante used to block the proton blast. They were clearly intergalactic grade weapons, weapons that not even the police, not even the military had access to.

"Sir, those are actually plasma blasters? Why do thugs from the upper faction have access to such weaponry?" Victoria asked with concerns.

"Who knows? It’s none of our business anyways, it’s a matter for the police to handle, we have much more pressing issues to attend to."

"But sir." Victoria fired back. "How the hell are the police supposed to fight back against something like that with just pistols and assault rifles?" The only reason she became an intergalactic agent was because of her desire to save people.

What good is that if the threat to humanity was humanity themselves?

"Like I said Agent Alpha, its none of our business, Starcore Delta deals with alien criminals, warlords that threatens the peace of our planet. Go home Agent Alpha and rest, you have other important missions to attend to.

Victoria grunted, then left the command center. She was displeased, after all Nova city was her home, and she had seen what those weapons could do first hand on Mars.

If nobody refused to take action, leaving the entire situation in the hands of a vigilante, she refused to stay quiet.

"I’ll get to the bottom of this."
