Chapter 27 - Is it wrong to have two cute yokai kittens as pets? (II)
Shinji watched Ruthra's lifeless body fall to the ground with a serene expression. Once he was sure there was no more danger, all the tension in his body melted away. He let himself fall to the ground, breathing heavily.
"I... killed a demon."
This was the first time he had taken the life of a being similar to him in appearance.
"..."
The night's cold hit his body, brushing against his wounds and making them itch.
"Right, the kittens."
Shinji quickly pulled the kittens out of his hoodie, hoping they hadn't gotten hurt during the earlier struggle.
"Ouch."
He exclaimed when he felt a tiny sting on one of his hands. Looking down, he saw the little black kitten biting him.
The kitten hung from his right hand, giving him a suspicious look.
With his left hand, Shinji pulled the white kitten out of his hoodie pocket. Placing her on his lap, he noticed she was having trouble breathing and seemed exhausted.
Looking at her closely, he realized that, rather than being white, the kitten's fur was more of a grayish shade.
The black kitten hurriedly released Shinji's hand and jumped on top of the white kitten, covering her with his body while letting out a loud meow.
Shinji understood that the black kitten was protecting her.
"You can calm down, I won't hurt them. Look, I already took care of the one who was chasing you."
The white kitten looked in disbelief at the demon's body.
Shinji, on the other hand, was fascinated by their features, noticing they both had two tails instead of one.
He couldn't help but think of Koneko and her sister, Kuroka. However, it couldn't possibly be them. He had seen Koneko at school, and by now, she and Kuroka had a bad relationship.
Well, that didn't matter now. He needed to treat the white kitten's injuries and get out of there quickly.
Since Shinji still didn't know how to use magic, it would be quite difficult to erase any traces of the battle.
Carefully cradling both kittens, despite the black kitten's reluctance, Shinji stored the demon's body in his [Item Box] and started heading home.
From a distance, the figure of a woman watched everything that had happened with an unreadable expression.
When the moonlight illuminated her face, it revealed that it was, in fact, Chisato.
She soon appeared at the site of the battle. Observing the damage to the area, she let out a sigh. With a flick of her hand, a magical circle appeared beneath her feet, and the surroundings were restored as if nothing had happened.
Her gaze shifted to the direction where Shinji had left, and her expression darkened.
"The wheel of destiny has already begun to turn."
She murmured before disappearing.
...
Twenty minutes later, Shinji was inside his house.
He placed the kittens on the living room couch, then removed the torn clothes from his body, setting them aside. Fortunately, beneath them, he was wearing royal silk clothing, which had been unaffected by the previous battle.
He walked over to the couch where the little black kitten was eyeing him warily. When it saw him approaching, it quickly swiped at his hand with its claws.
Shinji pulled his hand back, feeling the sting. Looking at his hand, he realized the wound had already healed quickly. He assumed it was due to the benefits of having high vitality. His gaze shifted to the black kitten.
"Hey, I know you're scared and worried I might harm your friend. But if you keep doing that, I won't be able to help her."
Hearing Shinji's words, the black kitten looked over at its unconscious sister, clearly exhausted. Then its gaze returned to Shinji. It knew that if this human had meant them harm, he would have done so already. It still remembered Ruthra's corpse on the ground and how Shinji had made it disappear in an instant.
With some reluctance and a look of mixed distrust and concern, the kitten decided to step aside, staying alert for any suspicious moves from the human.
Shinji smiled wryly at this. He then made a small bottle appear from his [Elemental Box]. It was a potion made with [Complete Recovery Herb]. Although its effects were somewhat diluted, it was still quite effective.
The black kitten glared at Shinji with suspicion and was about to attack when it saw the strange object appear out of nowhere.
"Calm down. It's a healing potion. Trust me."
The black kitten remained where it was but didn't lower its guard.
Shinji made the white kitten drink the potion. Soon, the kitten's condition started to improve, and she was even able to open her eyes.
The black kitten quickly ran over to the white kitten, rubbing against her body.
The white kitten's gaze softened before it turned to Shinji. When their eyes met, an unusual gleam appeared in hers.
Shinji smiled, noticing the kitten was recovering rapidly.
The kitten's body emitted a blinding light. Shinji covered his eyes for a few seconds, wondering what was happening. Once the light faded, he opened his eyes to find the figure of the girl he had seen earlier, staring back at him.
Her jet-black hair was tied in a ponytail. Her body was well-shaped, but not exaggerated. Her purple eyes stared at him intently.
Shinji stood frozen for a moment before speaking.

"E-this..."
But her words were interrupted by the girl's voice.
"Could you be Motohama Shinji, my master?"
She asked while her gaze wandered around the house.
Shinji tilted his head, confused.
"Huh? You know me?"
Shinji's question went unanswered. Instead, the girl moved closer to him and started sniffing him.
Shinji was startled by her sudden action, and both of them fell to the ground, with him ending up beneath her, feeling her large chest through the fabric of their clothes.
"Hmmm... no doubt about it. You're him. My master has become very handsome."
The girl placed her hands on Shinji's face while examining him. She didn't seem bothered by the position they ended up in.
"But I can't sense any spiritual power. That's odd. I'm sure the amulet stopped working some time ago."

(Another self-inserted arc... yeah, I'm getting a bit tired of it too. But well, some would prefer I just leave the arcs the author has inserted so far and continue with the plot progression, while others prefer that I keep adding plots from other animes... I'd prefer the first option because I want more progression in the story, not just watching new characters get added that will be forgotten in 3 or 5 Chapters...)
Shinji frowned at her words, then pushed her away.
He didn't understand what she was talking about, but it seemed like something serious.
"Explain yourself. What are you talking about?"
The girl's confused look cleared up as she realized that Shinji's confusion was genuine. She moved his hands aside, lifted her shirt, and revealed the amulet she kept as a memento of her grandfather.
"I've been listening carefully, master. The current Japan is divided into three factions:..."
"The first one is the Shinto gods, who reside in a different plane and rarely intervene in the human world."
"Then there are the youkai, or ayakashi. Creatures from Japanese folklore that are classified as spirits or demons depending on the interpretation."
"And finally, there are the families of priests, onmyoujis, and demon hunters. People with the ability to use spiritual energy or connect with a Shinto god to face evil spirits and maintain peace."
"You, my master, belong to the last power."
Shinji blinked in astonishment as he tried to process all the information he had just received. While he knew about the Shinto families from High School DxD, they weren't very relevant to the story and were mostly omitted.
As he cursed himself for not remembering the work in full, the girl continued on top of him.
"This amulet had the power to protect whoever possessed it from evil spirits. Once the master reached adulthood at 16, according to the pact between your family and my clan, someone would be sent to protect you while you began to learn more about your power and how to control it."
Shinji frowned. He didn't understand what this girl was talking about at all.
"But, I'm 17 now. If what you're saying is true, that means you should've arrived a year ago."
The girl's expression turned sad.
"You're absolutely right. That's because a year ago, most of my clan was massacred in an internal war between other youkai. I was taken prisoner and sold to a demon who forced me to join his nobility. I'm sorry for being so incompetent."
"No, no, it's not your fault. I'm sure you didn't know that would happen."
Shinji quickly responded upon seeing the look of pain and guilt on the girl's face.
The girl looked at him before a smile appeared on her face. Then, her eyes started to close.
"I apologize, master, it's been a long and difficult journey, so I'm not in the best condition to keep answering your questions. If you would allow me to rest..."
The girl faded away before finishing her sentence. Shinji felt her soft breath on his chest.
"Did she fall asleep?"
He murmured, scratching his head, his face flushing.
The sight he had right now was quite intense.
Shaking those thoughts from his head, Shinji stood up while carrying the girl. His gaze shifted to the black kitten, who was watching him warily and confused from the couch.
"Follow me. I'll give you both a room to sleep in."
He said as he walked toward the bedrooms.
Even he was exhausted. This day had turned out to be too long, even for him.
The kitten hurried to run after Shinji.
