Starting the Game with Godlike Vision-Chapter 47 - Familiar Faces in a Strange Place
After skimming through the barrage of comments on the screen, Zuo Chengan decided it was time to make himself a mask.
Although the audience didn't know what the scent was, they were aware that inhaling too much of it would cause the body to develop blood-filled sacs, much like the mountain monkeys.
In any case, it was definitely not something good.
During the battle, Zuo Chengan had deliberately held his breath while puncturing the monkeys' sacs, trying to minimize his exposure to the mysterious gas.
But the relentless attacks left him no time to warn the two inside the vehicle.
Judging by the fact that Zhang Zhuang and his team had brought ropes but no masks, it was clear they were unaware of the fragrance's hidden danger. Otherwise, they would have prepared accordingly.
This dungeon had only been attempted six times before—even the Tidal Surge Guild hadn't had many chances to explore it thoroughly.
Without a highly perceptive senior player, connecting the scent to the physical anomalies would have been difficult.
Even if someone had made the connection, there was no guarantee the information had been passed on.
Zhang Zhuang was likely aware that players could undergo physical changes but didn't know the cause.
As a precaution, he merely avoided consuming food and water of unknown origins.
…
The mountain monkeys' assault was especially fierce this time.
Five minutes had passed, yet they showed no signs of retreat.
Inside the carriage, Mo Dou—his head now bearing sheep horns while his feet remained dog paws—struggled for traction.
Sheep hooves, unlike those of goats, lacked gripping power, making it easy to slip on the smooth floor. Thus, he relied on the slip-resistant pads of his dog paws instead.
Working in sync with Li Yueqiu, he helped defend one side of the carriage.
Li Yueqiu would kick a monkey into submission, and Mo Dou would follow up with a powerful "Awoo-baa!" before hurling the limp, bone-fractured creature away.
Their teamwork was impeccable—not a single monkey breached their defense.
Li Yueqiu even had moments to toss Flying Pebble to support Zheng Ren, who was holding the other side.
Zheng Ren had transformed into a battle-hardened "chef of destruction," wielding his spatula like a whirlwind. His targets weren't vegetables but the skulls of the mountain monkeys.
"Allow me to gently crack open your skull!"
In other words, he was splitting heads with precision.
Occasionally, his swings would summon a couple of lively flies, which buzzed around and annoyed him to no end.
Irritated, he waved them away. "Shoo, shoo! Get lost, you stinking flies! Who invited you?"
The flies remained silent, but they seemed to harbor resentment.
"Today you ignore me; tomorrow you'll be begging for me. Just wait and see!"
…
The battle dragged on.
Zheng Ren's wrist ached from wielding the spatula, and Li Yueqiu's once-deadly Flying Pebble could now barely stall the monkeys.
Their stamina was running low.
Fortunately, the mountain monkeys, seeing their heavy casualties, began to retreat.
Perched on the vehicle roof, Zuo Chengan made sure to toss the bodies over the cliff instead of letting them linger.
Since their sacs continued to release the strange scent, he would rather take a hit himself than leave the corpses nearby.
The constant notification sounds announcing enemy kills had long since numbed him—he'd lost count of how many he had taken down.
And yet, not a single item had dropped.
After previously slaughtering 100 steel-toothed rats with no rewards, he had given up on the game's drop rates.
But this? This was absurdly low.
No wonder the game guaranteed a 100% drop rate for first dungeon clears—without it, item prices would skyrocket.
Soon, the mountain monkeys withdrew, giving everyone a moment to breathe and clean up.
Zhang Zhuang's team first pulled up their teammates who had been dangling halfway down the cliff, their bodies scraping against the rock face.
Then they cleared the remaining corpses from the vehicle.
Zuo Chengan's team, fortunate enough not to have anyone fall, focused on tending to their wounds.
Both teams had sustained minor injuries—mostly small cuts and light bites.
For players, these hardly counted as injuries. They didn't even require healing items; they would recover on their own in time.
As such, Zuo Chengan decided against handing out more tomato sauce, despite having four liters of it. It was better to conserve resources.
Mo Dou, who had eagerly anticipated the healing sauce, was left disappointed, silently retracting his fur-shedding paw.
For the rest of the journey, the barrage of comments quieted.
The audience chatted about mundane topics, and Zhang Zhuang's team caused no further trouble.
Zuo Chengan finally breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed they had successfully passed the checkpoint leading into the resort.
Ahead, a dark cave loomed.
Barring any surprises, the sightseeing vehicle would soon enter its depths.
…
The cave was damp and cold, carrying a scent eerily similar to that of the mountain monkeys' sacs.
Yet as if afraid of being noticed, the fragrance seemed diluted countless times over.
Without a keen nose or prior exposure, one might mistake it for the natural scent of earth and vegetation.
Having been forewarned by the comment section, Zuo Chengan was highly sensitive to any suspicious odors.
Upon entering the cave, he immediately picked up on the anomaly and discreetly signaled his teammates.
In the darkness, Li Yueqiu and Zheng Ren exchanged glances and held their breaths.
Zuo Chengan then donned his Night Vision Spectacles.
He had removed them earlier to prevent them from getting knocked off, but now they were useful again.
With them on, the environment became crystal clear.
He had expected to see ordinary rock walls. Instead, he found a sprawling network of root-like vines, twisting and pulsing as if they were breathing.
The scent he had noticed came from the rhythmic movements of these vines.
Before he could investigate further, the sightseeing car sped through the cave and emerged into a mountain valley village.
…
As the vehicle slowed to a stop at the village entrance, over 200 villagers stood gathered in welcome.
Strangely, despite the daylight, they all held torches.
Before Zuo Chengan even stepped off the vehicle, he heard the village chief's distinct, whistling accent. "Welcome to Sunlit Village! We've been expecting you. Please enjoy our Smoke Purification Ritual!"
The ritual involved villagers waving torches around the visitors, letting the smoke envelop them.
Upon spotting a villager in familiar clothing, Li Yueqiu's eyes welled with tears. She even saw a recognizable brand logo on a child's shoe.
This was the first time since being pulled into the game that she had encountered humans in a dungeon.
Updated from freewёbnoνel.com.
If Zheng Ren hadn't held her back, she would have rushed forward to borrow a phone and call the police.
Therefore, she endured the strange ceremony without protest.
From a scientific standpoint, it was simply a way to disinfect outsiders who might carry unknown pathogens.
The smoke wouldn't kill all bacteria and viruses, but it could help curb the spread of disease.
However… in this world, "science" seemed to hold little relevance.
Zheng Ren fully understood Li Yueqiu's excitement. He had felt the same way when he first encountered humans in a dungeon.
As the saying went, "When fellow countrymen meet, tears well up in their eyes."
But in reality, it was often fellow villagers who stabbed one in the back.
He had once poured his heart out to the head chef in a dungeon—only to find the chef had his eyes set on his heart, liver, and lungs.
If Zheng Ren hadn't been ruthless, he would have ended up as dumpling filling long ago.
