Chapter 7: Sacrificial Lamb

After I was discharged and took my evaluation then I practiced using acceleration for 8 hours a day preparing for next Monday where I would enter Eden, I even quit my job and online college classes to train more with acceleration.

When it became Monday I entered Eden and then I was immediately thrown into the entrance exam. I ended up in a jungle, and after finding a few more fellow cadets, we formed a group of 16 people.

Everything was going great until the second hour began; then it went to absolute hell because of a single person...

'That bastard...'

I saw in the distance a huge horde of calamities slowly approaching me. My eliminated allies weapons littered the ground, and standing in front of me was a cadet with purple hair and deep blue eyes, named Damien Gray, the person who got us into this situation in the first place.

I glared at him while he was laughing at the situation I was in.

"Hahaha!~"

Damien looked back at me as he stopped laughing and grinned at the expression on my face.

"What's wrong, Kim Taejune? I'm only being logical here. If there are fewer weak people in Eden, then isn't it better for the world to handle calamities and conquer towers? It's even better for us to pass Eden... right~?"

"You're crazy..."

"You eliminated our teammates who came with us for supplies and brought a horde of calamities..."

"For what? The sake of eliminating the weak?"

Damien cut me off. "It's better for the world entirely, it's their fault for being so weak after all~"

Damien took a step forward with his blade, Magnus, unsheathed it, pointed the blade at my chest, and continued speaking.

"Do you wanna know what I hate about you, Kim Taejune? It's not your stats that are as average as an ungifted, untalented, plain old boring civilian. It's not your hero obsession or your skills. It's that you want to save people weaker than yourself.

He made a disgusted face at me as he continued, "What's the point? It's a waste of time. I get that saviors are supposed to kill calamities and conquer towers, but there isn't anything about saving people. So let's test that fucking ideology of yours."

'If only my arms and legs weren't paralyzed by his skill, I would have probably punched this idiot by now...'

I glared at him as he slowly lowered his blade. "Here are your options, Kim Taejune, be a sacrificial lamb for those injured guys at the base and fight that horde of calamities, or run away and let the horde of calamities attack the base."

As the calamities approached, Damien grinned.

His skill had allowed him to paralyze my limbs, but its time limit had run out, allowing me to move again as he teleported using his other skill. "Seeya around, Kim Taejune~"

I quickly used acceleration to slam his sword into the ground in the last few seconds before he teleported away.

*THUD!*

Damien stared at me with a pissed-off expression. "You're gonna pay for—" His words were suddenly cut off by his teleportation, all that remained of him was his sword now on the ground without its owner.

'Enjoy surviving without a weapon bastard...'

I stared at the calamities in front of me. I picked up Magnus from the ground and took a deep breath.

'I haven't tried acceleration with multiple objects before, but it's worth a shot...'

The blade Magnus allowed its user to levitate five objects, including the user, within a radius of three meters. I recalled how Damien had used the blade to fly and stop arrows.

The calamities surrounding me began charging at me, all of them being the common calamity, the burning beast, which has glowing blue eyes, charcoal-colored skin, and reddish veins all over its body.

They usually take the shape of different animals, but their most common form is a bull. I quickly recalled an ability that one of my allies had told me about, it has the unique ability to set its body ablaze when it reaches a certain speed, but it destroys itself in exchange.

'Fuck it, I hope this works...'

When they were about to set ablaze, I used the ability of Magnus to create a wall of levitating blades that surrounded me, using some of the swords on the ground.

I aimed Magnus at the charging bulls and quickly braced myself for impact as they ran into the blades.

"MOOORGH!"

*THUD! SHLK! KRRK*

The beasts roared in pain as they collided with the wall of blades.

"MOOUGH!"

Their bodies slammed into the blades, which managed to pierce through their bodies. I was pushed back yet I gritted my teeth and continued to wait for more of them to ram into the swords, my cadet uniform being scorched in the process.

[You have saved 8 people from the common calamity, Burning Beast]

[You have gained 80 Salvation Points]

'Wait for it...'

'I really fucking hope this works...'

As they piled up against the swords, the smell of burning trees and smoke filled the area. I used my skill to accelerate the blades through them when most of them were pushing against the burning beasts that were impaled by the blades.

*Zing!*

[You have saved 8 people from the common calamity, Burning Beast]

The blades pierced through the beast's hide and into the next beast behind it, I quickly jumped and ran to the left while checking my surroundings, picked up another sword, and suddenly saw a burning beast charging at me.

I barely evaded the attack by jumping to the right. Making the bull slam its head into a nearby tree, setting it ablaze as it slowly burned itself out and died.

[You have saved 8 people from the common calamity, Burning Beast]

[You have gained 40 Salvation Points]

'Oh, that's way easier...'

Using a combination of my acceleration and dodging the burning beasts charging at me, I quickly handled the horde at the cost of most of my stamina.

'Holy shit... Is it over?'

My face was covered in soot, and my cadet uniform was rough and scorched. The area around me was now a barren battlefield instead of a clearing in a jungle, scattered with weapons and the corpses of calamities.

I stared at the system in the sky in a daze.

[Time limit: 1 hour]

[Enemies Remaining: 24,670]

[Cadets Remaining: 13,892]

'It's over...'

I felt my body giving up, and I collapsed onto the ground as I slowly blacked out, seeing the hazy appearance of someone approaching me.
