SLAM!

Maddison's back was already hurting from how many times she had been slammed into the ground over the past hour. The duels between Maddison and Azrael never went on for too long because of the insane difference in their abilities, and in that hour they had already fought more than ten times.

Maddison hadn't won even once.

The closest Maddison ever came to a win was when she managed to graze Azrael in their third duel, but that was the only time he gave up a point to her and he still kicked her out of the arena without bothering to acknowledge her hit.

It was humiliating.

Maddison knew that the entire school looked down on Azrael because of his lack of a God Aspect and in a way even she had started to think that she was going to be better than Azrael just because of how everyone called him weak.

But the training exercise today was making her think differently. How in the world could anyone call Azrael weak when he was this strong? Even without a God Aspect, if he kept growing this quickly, then Maddison couldn't imagine how strong he would be.

'No wonder he was able to kill Francis so easily.'

Maddison groaned as she turned herself over and stared up at the ceiling while breathing heavily. The sound of the referee announcing another win for Azrael echoed through the arena and Maddison decided at that moment that she hated the sound of its fucking voice.

Azrael looked down at Maddison with a critical look in his eyes. He was slightly disappointed by the level of Maddison's power. As someone without any friends, Azrael had never had someone to train with before either. He was always training alone and he never tried to test his strength against that of his peers.

When Maddison suggested that they train together, Azrael thought that he was going to finally get a good workout. The only things he had fought against for so long were the simulation daemons, so if he fought against another person who could defeat the lesser daemons, then wouldn't it be far better training?

But this... was disappointing.

At the level that Maddison was at, Azrael didn't even know if she would be able to defeat a lesser daemon on her own. That lesser daemon that he killed just the other day would have eradicated her.

But that was not what was making Azrael stare at Maddison so critically. There was something that had been knocking at the back of Azrael's head in the middle of all these duels. It almost seemed like Maddison wasn't comfortable using the sword she held.

"Hey, are you actually a swordswoman?"

Maddison sat up slowly with a pained look on her face as Azrael spoke and she looked at him in confusion while asking him what he meant by that. Azrael was silent for a few seconds before he shook his head and turned to leave.

"Never mind, it's not important."

"No, wait! Tell me – Ow!"

Maddison called out to Azrael before he could leave and Azrael turned around when he heard her cry of pain. Maddison had tried to get up too quickly. Her muscles were sore, so it would take a while for her to get feeling back in them.

Azrael debated saying anything for a while before he just sighed and decided to tell her. It wasn't like it would affect him at all.

"When you were using the sword in our fights, you hesitated in most of your attacks, almost like your body was trying to do one thing while your mind was trying to do something else. It made me think that you weren't in sync with your sword. Most people who choose the sword as their primary weapon and train with the sword all their lives know what it's like to make it an extension of themselves immediately. They only need to learn the basics and everything else comes to them naturally. But you were clumsy. I don't think you were born to use a sword."

Maddison sighed once she heard Azrael say this. Maddison couldn't believe that Azrael was able to easily deconstruct her entire fighting style after just one training session. He was really something else.

Azrael waited because he knew that Maddison was trying to say something in response and Maddison finally nodded after a while.

"Yeah, you're right. I didn't choose the sword as my primary weapon at first. When I was picking a weapon at the Divine Church, I didn't feel anything for the sword, but something happened when I was five and my dad forced me to start training with the sword so that I would be able to fit in with others."

Azrael narrowed his gaze before he turned around and faced Maddison fully.

"Is it related to your God Aspect? It was a weapon that showed who your Celestial guardian was and your father didn't like that."

Maddison nodded in response and Azrael thought things through for a moment before he brandished his sword once more.

"Show me. Both your God Aspect and your weapon. Use them both."

Maddison looked up at Azrael with shock on her face! He wanted her to use both of them!?

Azrael didn't have a God Aspect, so Maddison thought that it would be unfair to him for her to use her God Aspect against him.

Azrael could almost hear Maddison's thoughts just by the look on her face and he growled and told her to get the fuck up!

"If you're going to pity someone, then at least be stronger than them! Showing pity to someone that has already beaten the shit out of you is just stupidity! If you think you're doing something unfair by using your abilities, then I'd like to see you fucking touch me first!"

Maddison sighed before she quickly got to her feet while ignoring the pain in her body. Azrael was right. There was no guarantee that even with her abilities she would be able to defeat Azrael in a one-on-one fight. It was better to use them and try her best to even the playing field than to pity Azrael so much without trying her best.

Maddison took in a deep breath and sighed before she spoke a command to the simulation AI.

"Requesting weapon change."

[Student Alastor Maddison had been recognized. Please input your weapon choice.]

"Scythe."

[Please input curved blade length.]

"A meter and a half."

[Please input shaft length.]

"Three meters."

[Command accepted.]

The sword in Maddison's hand slowly began to transform. It first dissolved back into the cylindrical rod that she had initially before the cylinder increased in length and a large curved blade grew out from the edge. The scythe was black and the sharp edge gleamed with a silver luster that threatened a sharp cut with the slightest touch.

Maddison spun the scythe around from one hand to the other and then she spun it behind her and brought it back to the front before slamming the end of it on the ground. Maddison didn't know it, but Azrael could easily see the small smile on her face when she held the scythe.

There was a relaxed ease in the way Maddison handled the scythe and Azrael could tell that she was far more comfortable holding onto the scythe than the sword.
