Chapter 126: Promoted!

"This cannot stand! A mere servant daring to injure an Outer Sect disciple!? It’s an insult to the dignity of the sect!"

"Lei Xing was warned," another Elder said coolly, sipping tea. "He was told not to cause trouble several times before. If he underestimated a mortal and lost, that is his shame to bear."

Lei Xing’s pettiness was well known and he had done several acts for which he had been reprimanded for before. It was also why he had been assigned this task, since it wouldn’t seem out of the norm for him to do something like this.

His abuse of servants was also quite common after all.

"He was tricked!" Elder Fei snarled. "Drugged! Surely, it must have been some kind of forbidden alchemy!"

The room fell into a contemplative silence.

Forbidden alchemy was a serious accusation.

Enough to bring sect-wide consequences — especially if it was traced back to... certain individuals known for their "experiments."

All eyes slowly, slowly drifted to the far end of the table.

Where Alchemist Li Mei sat, nibbling on a candied plum, looking thoroughly innocent.

She blinked at them.

"Whatcha staring at?"

No one dared directly accuse her. There were many things they needed to consider before they could point their fingers at her.

’Shit, we can’t even offend this little devil without the Peak Head getting mad at us.’ The Elders thought.

They couldn’t do that. At least not yet. Li Mei might just be an Outer Sect Disciple, but that was just on the surface. Her backing was far too strong for even Elders to do anything.

Instead, they turned the conversation toward more acceptable topics.

Like how to "deal with" Han Yu.

"Strip him of his position as a servant and expel him from the sect!"

"Ridiculous," another Elder said. "We would look foolish. A high rank Inner Court disciple was defeated. If we lash out now, it shows weakness."

"Not to mention, if this gets out, the other sects will think of us as a joke and even band up to accuse us of abusing the servants and not following our own laws.’ Someone added.

After all, ultimately Han Yu had been wronged and should not have been punished.

"Then... make him an Outer Disciple?" someone suggested tentatively.

First there was shock, then murmurs of agreement rose.

It was a perfect solution.

Promote him slightly — enough to save face — but place him under stricter rules. No chance to embarrass the sect again.

More importantly, it would tie him to the sect more tightly.

Outer Disciples had much less freedom. They were watched. Controlled. The ones that had a vendetta against Han Yu were alreayd thinking of new schemes they could use to handle Han Yu.

Perfect.

Elder Fei still looked like he was chewing rocks, but even he had to admit it was the best political move.

’If he’s an Outer Court Disciple, he can be given missions. Who’s to say what can happen on those ’dangerous’ missions.’ He thought as a smile appeared on his face.

The decision was made.

Li Mei smiled as if things had gone just the way she wanted.

’I knew grandma could do it!’ Li Mei was happy.

Meanwhile, some time later in the servant quarters...

Han Yu sat on his cot, wrapped in bandages, nibbling weakly on a bowl of rice porridge.

He felt like death warmed over.

Every muscle ached. His skin itched like it was trying to peel off. His stomach turned at every bite.

But he was alive.

And strong.

Stronger than he had ever been before.

His senses were sharper. His breathing deeper. His bones felt like iron rods hammered straight through his body.

He had climbed another step, even if it had been through chaos, dirt, and utter madness.

Li Mei poked her head into his room.

"You’re famous, you know," she said cheerfully. "Half the sect is talking about you now. You’re officially a problem!"

Han Yu groaned.

"Why does this keep happening to me...?"

Li Mei dropped a small folded note onto his lap.

Han Yu blinked, opened it, and read:

"Han Yu.

You are hereby promoted to Outer Disciple rank, effective immediately. Report to the Outer Disciple Hall for registration.

Elder Fei."

Han Yu stared at it, dumbfounded.

Outer Disciple.

A real cultivator now. Not just a servant.

While he was not a Qi refining realm cultivator yet, that didn’t mean he couldn’t be a outer disciple. After all, the other recruits who had Sackville joined the sect as outer court disciples were also at the Body Tempering Realm.

They would simply make use of the resources provided and reach the Qi Refining Realm, eventually.

He should have been thrilled.

But instead, he had a sinking feeling in his gut, because if they were promoting him, it wasn’t just kindness.

It meant bigger targets were going to be painted on his back.

There was no telling what they could do to him, so he would have to be extra careful. At least in the Servant area, he didn’t have to be that wary of stronger disciples. While they could certainly come down, they had to inform the sect about them leaving their peaks.

There was a paper trail, so if anything happened, it could at least be tracked. But once Han Yu was really in the main part of the sect, all bets were off.

Han Yu would have to take part in the training, missions and more. He could be challenged to spars, that he might not be able to reject and get beaten up that way. While the higher status granted benefits and some respect, it also came with the disadvantages.

It would have been a different thing, if Han Yu was joining with a clean slate, but he had far too many infractions on his record now. Far too many foes that were waiting for him to make a mistake.

And while he was pondering on all these possibilities, Li Mei leaned in with a sly grin.

"Oh, by the way... I’ve been working on some new pills to help you survive Outer Sect politics. They’re extra spicy."

Han Yu whimpered quietly into his rice bowl.fгeewebnovёl.com
