Chapter 45 - A Fragrant Cloth And Unworthy Of Name

Han Yu looked down and immediately regretted it.

"This is way too high... can't we fly at a lower height?" Han Yu pleaded, gripping onto the sword with the desperation of a man clinging to a floating plank in the middle of a stormy ocean.

"That would be too slow since we'd hit obstacles on the path," Xu Qing replied, completely unfazed by his distress. Without another word, she controlled the sword to accelerate.

WHOOSH!

The flight started slow but quickly picked up speed until they were soaring at least fifty kilometers per hour!

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Han Yu screamed non-stop, his face contorting in sheer terror as the wind assaulted him with the force of a thousand slaps.

"UGH! I'll shut you up myself!" Xu Qing snapped before stuffing a cloth into Han Yu's mouth.

"MNMMM! UNGNNNN!" Han Yu groaned in protest, eyes widening as the fabric muffled his screams.

Then he caught a scent—a pleasant fragrance wafting from the cloth.

;Lilac? Wait... is this her handkerchief?; A part of his brain, the part that wasn't screaming in terror, registered this intriguing development.

He briefly considered pulling it out to confirm, but his fear of plummeting to his doom decisively won over his curiosity. Thus, he simply remained still, his muffled groans eventually subsiding.

After a few minutes, he managed to open his eyes again without panicking. He hesitantly glanced around.

"Okay... it's not as bad as I thought," he murmured, taking in the breathtaking sight below them.

They had gained even more altitude, now flying at nearly a hundred kilometers above the ground. From up here, the landscape stretched endlessly, the horizon unbroken by trees or mountains. It was... peaceful.

Of course, this had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he was sharing the ride with an incredibly beautiful woman.

She said her name was Xu Qing... that's a pretty name. Han Yu thought, feeling oddly pleased that it was her who had recruited him and not some grumpy old elder. Looks like my luck is finally turning around!

Meanwhile, back on the ground, someone else was wondering about Han Yu's whereabouts.

The ghostly man sat on a log, chewing on a piece of dried meat. He frowned, glancing toward the sky as if expecting the boy to come crashing down any moment.

"Where is he?" the man muttered.

He had been waiting for hours, and the sun was beginning to set.

'Did he already reach the city? Or did he actually get recruited by a sect?' he wondered before shaking his head. No way. That kid definitely got himself into trouble.

Sighing, he decided to wait a little longer. An hour passed, but still no sign of Han Yu. His patience finally wore thin.

"Well, I do need a drink," he muttered, rising to his feet.

With his speed, it only took ten minutes to reach the town. As he approached the gates, he observed the guards and the protective array surrounding the walls.

"Hmm... an alarm and detection formation," he noted before smirking. "Nothing I can't handle."

Taking out a small knife, he flicked his wrist.

SHUA!

A thin stream of energy shot out, striking an invisible weak point in the array. A faint ripple appeared for a brief moment before vanishing.

Without hesitation, he leapt through the now-inactive section of the barrier and landed silently inside the town.

He strolled through the streets, taking in the sights of the bustling marketplace. People moved about, hawkers called out to customers, and the delicious aroma of street food filled the air.

"Hmph. Doesn't even compare to the villages in the Immortal Worlds," he scoffed.

Despite his disdain, his feet unconsciously led him toward a familiar establishment—a tavern.

Just as he was about to step inside, he paused.

'Han Yu mentioned his friends... They should have money.'

With that thought, he turned around and began his search.

It didn't take long to find Dan Hu, who sat alone in a corner of his usual tavern, nursing a cup of wine with a forlorn expression.

"First Han Yu, now Fat Kui... Just what kind of luck do those two have?" Dan Hu muttered before pouring himself another drink.

Just as he was about to take a sip, his bottle was unceremoniously snatched from his hand.

"Huh?" He looked up to see a ragged, dangerous-looking man casually drinking his wine.

"Hey! That's mine!" Dan Hu protested.

"Not anymore," the ghostly man replied, taking a seat across from him.

Dan Hu gulped, sensing an undeniable pressure from the man before him.

However, an hour later, the situation had completely flipped on its head.

"HAHAHAHA! Tell me more! Tell me more!" Dan Hu laughed loudly, slamming the table with glee.

"And then... we took the elder to the Courtesan House and stole his clothes while he was inside! He had no way to pay, and they had to call his wife!" The ghostly man burst into laughter, recalling an old prank.

THUD THUD THUD!

Dan Hu doubled over, unable to contain himself.

"That's the best thing I've heard all year!" he gasped between bouts of laughter.

"Here, have more wine!" he added, pouring the ghostly man another drink.

"Nice. You're way better company than that brat," the ghostly man remarked.

"I know, right?! Han Yu should have introduced me to you way earlier. We would've had so much fun!" Dan Hu grinned drunkenly.

"You even have better manners," the ghostly man chuckled.

"Oh, by the way, I never got your name, Senior."

"You can call me Daoist Murong," the ghostly man revealed with a rare smile.

Had Han Yu been present, he would have been utterly dumbfounded. The ghostly man, laughing? Drinking merrily? Chatting like an old friend?

Unbelievable.

Forget being sociable, Han Yu hadn't even been allowed to learn the man's name! The moment he had asked, he had simply been told:

"You are unworthy."

Yet here was Dan Hu, just an hour later, drinking with him like old buddies.

Han Yu would cry if he ever found out.
