Chapter 386: Time to Beg

“Dahlia, dear! Please help your dear father!” The head of the Alnault family desperately pleaded for my help.

I squinted my eyes at his face as I took in the evident panic and helplessness displayed on his features. I wasn’t sure what I was hoping for when I wanted to see him, but his reaction surely surpassed even my wildest expectations. Gone were all of his confidence and arrogance. Perhaps, for the first time in his life, this man was feeling truly hopeless and helpless.

“Dahlia! You have to help get us out of this. You need to help our family!”my mother’s high-pitched voice begged openly for my help.

I glanced in her direction. I wasn’t at all surprised to feel absolutely no pity for her. The only question that went through my mind was why these two people were still standing on their feet rather than kneeling in front of me on their knees. My biological father continued begging while giving me countless reasons why I should help him out. However, most of his words were lost to me, and that was probably because I never had any intentions to help them in the very first place. Their words rang hollow and without meaning or implications.

“You can’t let our family go to ruin like this. Talk to the king...please...” My father suggested the most obvious plan to solve the situation. For the first time in a while, I was thankful for my fabricated relationship with Desmond because it was precisely what brought my parents to me in their time of desperate need. They probably thought that as Desmond’s lover, I could change his mind and that he could revert his order. I felt the corner of my lips twitching before curving up into a merciless cold smile.

“That’s right! If only you ask him, I’m sure that Desmond would do anything and everything for you,” my mother said with sparkling hope in her eyes.

“I guess you’re right. I guess Desmond would do anything for me if only I would ask,” I said as I tilted my head slightly to the side as if pondering the idea in my head.

“Of course. We always knew that you were dating him with the interest of our family in mind,” my mother said with a pleased smile on her lips. The way that my parents’ eyes sparkled with hope made me feel an unstoppable urge to extinguish that fire burning behind their eyes. After all, they couldn’t have been more wrong about the reason why I was dating Desmond and what I had in mind for our family.

I glanced over at Bradon to see him watching the situation unfold quite calmly. Undoubtedly, much of what was happening must have been to his distaste, yet within expectation. However, he still decided to let me have my way and deal with it the way that I wanted to, and for that, I truly appreciated his patience and understanding. I turned my attention back to my parents, who still seemed extremely eager for me to step in to solve their problems.

I turned away from them and took a few steps towards the sofa before slowly lowering myself down onto its seat and crossing my legs. My desperate parents naturally moved closer to me, looking like two little dogs begging for their owner’s attention.

“You two really have bad manners. I can’t believe that after so many years of drilling that particular habit into me, the two of you could have such rotten habits yourselves,” I said as I pretended to check out the manicure of my fingernails.

“Dahlia, dear...” my mother began saying before trailing off in shock.

“Why are you still standing?” I asked before either of them could say anything else.

The two of them had a very confused look on their faces as if they weren’t sure what to do. After exchanging glances with each other, my father made a move closer to the sofa as if to take a seat. My lips curved into a smirk, thinking that he had gotten it all wrong all over again.

“If you’re begging for my favor, why aren’t you on your hands and knees?” I asked as I stared at them intensely.

I almost couldn’t suppress the laughter that was bubbling inside of me from bursting forth at the look of extreme shock that appeared on their faces as their mouths hung open and their eyes widened in surprise at my words.

“You’re telling us to...” my father began asking with clear disbelief in his tone. For a moment, it was clear that he thought that what I wanted was completely ridiculous.

“Exactly. If you want my help, you can start by begging on your hands and knees. If you act convincing enough, who knows? I might feel compelled to show you a little of my mercy,” I replied before letting out a soft laugh.

“Your sister would never do anything like this,” my mother snapped at me with clear frustration.

It wasn’t beyond her, even in that situation, to compare me with a daughter who she thought was ultimately perfect. I turned and grinned at her before shaking my head slowly from side to side in disagreement.

“Your precious favorite daughter is not in any position to help you out,” I replied coldly before gesturing to the side.

My mother let out a gasping sound and put her hands up to cover her mouth when she spotted Diana entering the room. I knew very well that Diana did not have any intention to help our parents, and even if she did, I doubted that there was anything she could really do about the situation.

The cold look in Diana’s eyes as she stared at our parents made them speechless. To make matters worse for them, Diana simply shook her head slowly from side to side with a regretful look on her face as if she wanted to tell our parents to resign themselves to their fate.
