Super Soldier in the City-Chapter 2165 - 2228: Pursuit
"It’s the government army, they’re attacking Bare-ass General! There are over three thousand people, including mercenaries." General Lion said angrily.
"When did the attack start?"
"Last night, it started last night. They have many squads distributed along several routes for ambushes. Those who escape the encirclement are intercepted, and those trying to come in from outside are attacked as well. These damn government troops, they are more evil and ruthless than us. They’re not even human!"
Those who escape the encirclement might be rebels, but they even attack those coming in from outside.
Li Yifei looked at two cars, both destroyed by explosions, with no survivors inside. As he contemplated, the door of one car opened, and a blood-covered person crawled out. General Lion regained his composure, strode over, pointed a gun at the person’s head, and said, "This is relief." 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
The subordinate indeed stopped struggling, only looked at Li Yifei, weakly mumbling something. Li Yifei didn’t understand the native language, but General Lion did, translating, "Messenger, he says he hopes you can use the Holy Sword to end his life, so he can fly to the Kingdom of God!"
Li Yifei didn’t speak, a True Qi Blade materializing in his hand, with one swift stroke, he beheaded the man. Li Yifei noticed the man’s expression, showing relief, freed from pressure and pain. He had no time for any reaction, as his head was already severed.
After dealing with him, Li Yifei and General Lion decided to press forward. The government army’s sudden action took Bare-ass General by complete surprise, indicating the assault was unexpectedly abrupt, the initial secrecy was indeed excellent, but no matter how well it’s done, any movement would be quickly detected, even at night.
Li Yifei wasn’t thinking about rescuing anyone; he was concerned about preserving the True Qi Armor technique from being lost, especially if Bare-ass General**** died.
With that thought, Li Yifei and General Lion quickly raced forward, finding an off-road vehicle, one used by the ambushers, and drove inside.
Ten kilometers later, the two entered the war zone, a true battlefield, unimaginable to many at home, beyond what films can convey. It was beyond carnage, genuinely horrifying. In a mountain valley lay over a thousand corpses, some scorched by phosphorus bombs, while others still struggled with cries of agony. Li Yifei noticed many were naked, while others wore clothes, identified as government troops.
The battle was exceptionally brutal, the air thick with smoke and blood, assaulting the respiratory organs and eyes. This was truly a scene of thousands of casualties, not a fabricated movie scene. Even Li Yifei, witnessing this for the second time; the first being those time-trapped corpses on the Island of All Beings.
His expression involuntarily twisted into a grimace, mouth open as he surveyed the bodies. General Lion quickly charged forward, finding a still-alive, naked soldier, shaking him awake, and inquiring about Bare-ass General’s whereabouts.
The man was shot in the abdomen; if promptly treated, he might not die, but in current conditions, finding a doctor seemed impossible, likely leading to a limited lifespan even if he survived.
After a brief conversation, General Lion got the intel and quickly informed Li Yifei: "Messenger, Bare-ass General fled south to the forest. They were ambushed while marching, with most troops airlifted in, and another contingent betrayed them, catching Bare-ass General off guard."
"Chase!" Li Yifei issued a concise command. The duo grabbed several guns, returned to the vehicle, and sped off. Forty kilometers ahead lies a forest, dense but not a rainforest, teeming with wildlife but posing no human threat. Bare-ass General, with several hundred men, fled here in desperation, planning to catch their breath, but suffered bombings and low-altitude strafing from aircraft. Although they destroyed an attack helicopter with a grenade launcher, they lost over two hundred men.
Finally finding refuge in the forest depths, Bare-ass General, more accustomed to jungle combat, found relief. The dense vegetation reduced aerial threats significantly, needing only cautious tactics to evade many attacks.
Li Yifei returned to the battlefield, reliving the intensity, though the situation seemed off; he discarded an empty gun after vanquishing a government troop squad.
Li Yifei wasn’t ruthless, there’s no choice but to kill them before they killed him.
Reaching the forest, government troops were everywhere, shouting and rushing into the woods, seemingly determined to eliminate Bare-ass General today, wiping out opposing factions till only General Lion’s forces remained.
Hence, General Lion was visibly furious; three forces were supposed to mutually support each other, even without formal agreements, an understood alliance, yet betrayal fractured one unit, another shattered, leaving his troop seemingly unable to persist.
Li Yifei wasn’t dwelling on such matters; wielding an American Light Machine Gun, he slung a sniper rifle on his back, glanced at General Lion, and said, "Into the jungle!"
General Lion hurriedly followed suit, more concerned about his unit possibly facing a surprise attack, a dreadful scenario, but needing to accompany Li Yifei who wasn’t familiar with Bare-ass General.
Half an hour later, gunfire still echoed through the jungle. General Lion had been shot; one of his arms was limp. After Li Yifei helped him stop the bleeding, he originally intended to go alone, but General Lion insisted on following.
This forest was vast, spanning several hundred miles. Li Yifei and General Lion were slow on foot, yet along the way, they managed to take down dozens of government soldiers, mostly by Li Yifei’s hand.
Indeed, he seemed like a messenger of God. Who else could accomplish such feats? Moreover, he appeared tireless, his marksmanship eerily accurate, followed closely by General Lion who thought to himself.
Another two hours passed, and the two arrived at a clearing, witnessing the aftermath of a fierce battle. This was a mountain clearing, not naturally occurring but blasted open by missiles. The crater was filled with bodies, a scene of utter horror, and yet there were some survivors. General Lion hurriedly pulled one over to question him.
"Agent, bad news. Bare-ass General has been captured. The government forces had witch doctors too, several of them worked together to capture Bare-ass General. The others scattered!"
"Which way did they go?"
"That way, they ran that way, twenty minutes ago, maybe half an hour."
"Never mind, you head back to organize the troops, I’ll go rescue him!" Li Yifei resolutely decided.
"Huh? Even after all this time, you’re still going to chase?"
"Yes." Li Yifei finished speaking and dashed out. He moved so swiftly that to General Lion he was just a blur, as if in one swoosh, Li Yifei shot dozens of meters ahead, and with another blink, Li Yifei’s figure disappeared.
"That was too fast!" General Lion muttered instinctively, just as two people rushed out from behind him, knives in hand, aiming to stab him. General Lion’s heart jolted, and he immediately turned, grabbing the two with force, even using his injured arm.
After dispatching the two, he didn’t dare linger. The forest was now rife with danger, and he needed to escape quickly to regroup his forces at the base camp.
If it weren’t for the ambush, Bare-ass General wouldn’t have been caught so passively, or met such a fate as being captured.
Li Yifei exercised his agility, charging forward with all his might. His speed was astonishing, and the dense forest seemed defenseless against him, allowing easy passage.
Soon, Li Yifei discovered the retreat trail of those people—over fifty had passed through here, moving hurriedly, eager to exit the forest.
After another twenty minutes of pursuit, Li Yifei was about to emerge from the forest, finally spotting the group ahead, who had already exited the forest and were running along the path, calling for reinforcements. Li Yifei also noticed a bound figure, a well-built man without clothes, cursing all the way, but unfortunately, all in a language unclear to Li Yifei.
Trailing at the rear, Li Yifei remained hidden in the woods. When the time was right, he suddenly struck, and with his sniper rifle, he seemed not to need any aiming, firing bullets one by one effortlessly. These bullets flew out accurately, hitting their targets a hundred meters away.
Remarkably, none hit Bare-ass General, even though Li Yifei’s first shots were at those carrying him.
As he fired, Li Yifei was also moving at high speed through the forest, so the government soldiers had the illusion that the shots came from many snipers ambushing them. Each bullet was precise and lethal, claiming lives like a death warrant.
Facing the ambush, the government soldiers quickly fell into chaos. With their numbers reduced by half in just under a minute, the remaining half panicked momentarily and used the opportunity of Li Yifei reloading to scramble into a rain-carved ditch, which conveniently blocked Li Yifei’s line of sight, causing several shots to miss.
In the remaining group, there were three oddly dressed black men, two elders, and one slightly younger. They wore hats crafted from precious bird feathers and gems. One held a skull, another had a crystal staff, and the younger one wielded a sturdy leg bone, polished bright.
Seeing these three, Li Yifei knew they were the witch doctors. When they jumped into the ditch, they pulled Bare-ass General along. Li Yifei fired a few shots to try and stop them but it was too late.
He didn’t rush to attack, because the enemy was hiding, so he either had to force them out or wait for an opportunity.
