Super Zoo-Chapter 605 600 Sudden Murderous Intent
Antonio's eyes lit up, but Suming's world turned dark. The former's excitement contrasted with the latter's grim realism. The forest at dusk was dim to start with, barely illuminated by slivers of light peeking through the trees. But suddenly, the surrounding area was enveloped by nothing but the flapping of wings. Large swarms of giant fruit bats dominated the woods, their beating wings obscuring everything.
Adult giant fruit bats could span one and a half meters when their wings were fully extended, which was even larger than a round dining table for a family of three. Describing the sight of hundreds of these giant fruit bats gathering as blotting out the sky was no exaggeration.
With so many giant fruit bats appearing, everyone on the scene inevitably tensed up. These creatures were known for drinking blood, and if the swarm of bats attacked all at once, the six of them would be drained dry in the blink of an eye.
It seemed that the group of bats was just passing by at first, not having noticed the people in the forest as they flew overhead and around them in large numbers.
But soon, the scent of the musk deer's fresh blood attracted them, and a few of the bats strayed from the main group to dive towards the direction of the shelter.
There was a distance still to the bat-catching net, and it appeared that the giant fruit bats detected something amiss ahead. Veering off their initial path, they circumvented the trapping net set before them. However, bat-catching nets surrounded the small shelter from all sides and above, so regardless of the direction they came from, they were bound to plummet straight into the nets.
Beforehand, Suming had wondered why the giant fruit bats would blunder into the net despite their ability to detect it using echolocation; they weren't foolish after all.
But after watching for a while, Suming understood. It wasn't that they were foolish, but that there were simply too many of them!
More and more giant fruit bats, drawn by the smell of blood, flew towards the shelter. Some in the front realized the presence of the net and swerved, dodging to the side, but immediately others swooped in, one after another. The whole scene fell into chaos, with fruit bats of various sizes frequently colliding in mid-air. Due to the interference from the rest of the swarm, echolocation was much less effective at that moment.
Finally, the first bat became ensnared. The sturdy bat-catching net was violently dented inwards by the impact of the giant fruit bat, which, caught in the trap, glared with blood-red eyes, bared teeth, and hissed with a piercing shriek.
For animals, the instinct to feed overrides everything; they wouldn't abandon their 'path' simply because it was blocked in front. In quick succession, more and more bats were tangled in the nets, and yet more of the giant fruit bats kept rushing forth.
At first, Suming had doubted the thickness and size of the nets Antonio had used, but it was clear now that Antonio's seasoned experience had paid off. The giant fruit bats were big, powerful, and numerous, sporting razor-sharp teeth. Had it been an ordinary net, it would have been shattered or bitten through already. But now the wide nets, although violently shaken by the thrusts of the giant fruit bats, remained extremely sturdy.
The nets distributed around the shelter served not only to capture bats but also acted as a protective barrier for the six people within. If they had used ordinary nets, the fruit bats would have already broken through. The giant fruit bats wouldn't be content with just a single musk deer.
As more and more bats charged into the nets, the grand meshes on all sides stretched with terrifying curves, threatening to collapse at any moment. Antonio sensed the timing was about right and shouted at Su Lijun, "Su, the fuel! Light it up, quick!"
Bats are afraid of fire, and lighting up a bonfire at this moment could disperse the main squadron of giant fruit bats outside. Then Antonio would be able to easily capture the rest that were entangled in the nets.
Su Lijun swiftly fetched a small fire torch from his backpack, the kind with gas fuel and a button that, when pressed, produced a roaring flame, somewhat reminiscent of an Olympic torch.
In the mere moments of delay, one side of the bat-catching net was already on the verge of collapse. Although the net was sturdy, the branches that secured it creaked ominously, liable to snap at any moment. The giant fruit bats clinging to it became agitated, screeching manically.
Antonio screamed, "Su, what are you waiting for? You yellow-skinned pig, do you want us all to die here?"
Suming's mouth twitched. The cantankerous old man was too used to giving orders and paid no mind to the situation. Now, when asking Su Lijun to act, couldn't he have been polite? Besides, shouldn't he abstain from criticizing monks in front of a Buddha; I'm sitting right here!
With the solid fuel in his hand, Su Lijun's face, illumined by the fire torch, seemed somewhat fierce and sinister as he darkly stated, "Mr. Antonio, I have a question for you."
The surrounding bat-catching nets shuddered chaotically, ready to give way at any moment. Antonio, realizing Su Lijun was acting unusual, coughed, and squinting his eyes, tried to muster a faint smile, "Su, what are you going to do?"
Suming's two bodyguards approached Su Lijun from both sides without a sound. But after just one step, Su Lijun immediately noticed and grabbed a rope dangling from a tree.
The rope was connected to a net trap behind him; it was tied with a slipknot that would release the net if pulled with force.
The bodyguards instantly froze, not daring to move. Once the net was released, the bats would swarm in, and no one except Su Lijun with his torch could survive.
"Cousin, let's talk this out!" Suming hurriedly shouted, his acting superficial, his tone overly exaggerated. Su Meng moved silently forward and shielded Suming behind himself.
Su Lijun glanced at Suming and looked at Antonio, asking succinctly, "Mr. Antonio, when you both are cooperating in the future, what will be my responsibility?"
"Oh, Su, you're too suspicious!" Antonio immediately realized what Su Lijun was worried about and said, "Of course, you will still be my agent, Su. We've been working together happily for so many years, haven't we?"
The corners of Su Lijun's mouth twitched twice, as if he was hesitating.
Seizing the moment of his distraction, the Italian bodyguard on the left suddenly sprang into action like a leopard, delivering a punch to Su Lijun's stomach. Su Lijun bent over in pain, and the other bodyguard raised his hand, a dagger flashing coldly as he pinned Su Lijun's hand, which was holding the rope, to the tree trunk.
In the blink of an eye, before Suming could even see what happened, another cold gleam appeared. A dagger was thrust into Su Lijun's shoulder without hesitation, and Su Lijun screamed in agony. The hand holding the rope slackened immediately.
Blood spurted from the wound like a fountain. Su Lijun's eyes widened as he desperately tried to press down on the bleeding.
The bodyguard with the dagger in reverse grip took the net rope with one hand while wiping the dagger across Su Lijun's body with the other, carelessly inserting the dagger back into his boot without a glance.
Su Lijun's eyes were almost bulging out as he looked at Antonio in disbelief. He leaned against the tree, sliding down limply with one hand still nailed to it. A wound on his shoulder, gaping like a child's mouth, was spouting blood with a hissing sound.
Suming's gaze sharpened.

Antonio's bodyguards were too skilled, definitely professional killers, and they worked together with perfect synchronization, like two efficient and precise killing machines. If they had targeted him instead, he probably would be dead by now.
In terms of strength, the two of them combined were no match for Su Meng or even himself. Yet in terms of efficiency and professionalism, he couldn't compare at all to these two bodyguards.
He glanced at Antonio; this old bastard was ruthless, killing Su Lijun without mercy right in front of his eyes. What was his intention?
"*&@...1!" But Antonio looked shocked and terrified, bellowing loudly, and leaped for the torch on the ground as if his backside were on fire.
Squeak...crash...
Su Lijun's blood, both hot and fishy, was spilling out more than tenfold compared to that of the small deer, filling the forest with a pungent scent of blood and instantly attracting all the bats in the sky.
With a snap, a tree branch tied to the net rope finally snapped under the strain.
