Chapter 186: The Scar

"Don’t..."

Before Alexandra could compose herself, the soft and hoarse voice of Maximus made her tears dry enough for her to look at his face.

"Maximus..." she placed her shaking hand on his cheek. "How are you-"

She stopped as he tried to speak. But he couldn’t speak and started coughing.

"Wait...I’ll..." Alexandra stood erect and turned in a hurry. "I’ll bring water!"

"Care-ful..."

Maximus’ hoarse pleading was interrupted with a cough. He stretched his limbs a little and slowly scooted to sit up.

"One moment," Alexandra trodded to the table where she kept warm water ready for when he would wake up. She composed her shaking hands and poured the water into the glass only to realize that the water has gone lukewarm.

She almost cursed out loud for her stupidity to let the water go cold.

"Sorry, I should have warmed it once more time. I knew you would need water immediately after you woke up but I..." she mumbled and passed the glass to Maximus.

Maximus got the glass and drank it. Alexandra tried to get some more water for him but he held her hand.

"Sit," he patted beside him. "And take a deep breath." He placed the glass by the side and spoke in a soothing tone.

Alexandra did what he told her. She took a deep breath, closing her eyes. She is stressed to the max when she should calmly explain everything to Maximus.

When she opened her eyes, she was surprised to see the face of Maximus. His thin lips were curved up with ecstasy and his golden eyes that refracted the light from the window were filled with joy.

"You’re happy..." she leaned closer to him.

"I am!" he smiled and pulled her to a hug. "I am looking at you and I am happy," he said and his voice started to shake.

Alexandra hugged him and took a whiff of his scent. His minty scent was overflowing. Oh, how she missed his scent!

It was in the morning she hugged him. But his scent was not this pronounced. But now...

"Ah, I am so relieved, Maximus!" she rubbed her cheek on his chest. "I am so relieved I get to hug you like this. And..."

She got out of his hold and looked at his face. The happy smile was still ruling his face and the same smile jumped to her lips too.

"Tubby, I love you," she said. Leaning forward, she kissed his lips.

But then she realized something.

"I-"

Maximus was about to say something, but Alexandra started to undress him and he just looked at her with a smile.

"The wound..." Alexandra’s hand traced over his chest. His wound has healed very well. But there was a scar left.

"Does it hurt anywhere?" she pressed her hand on his chest along the scar.

"No," he shook his head.

"Ah, but this scar..." she let out a sigh.

She knew that the spells she used must have healed him completely and even the scar tissues. But she didn’t know why the scar is left there. She didn’t want the scar there. Because then it would be a reminder forever.

That scar would remind her forever that she is the one who pierced him in the chest with her very dangerous sword.

She didn’t want to have a reminder of that in his chest.

She closed her eyes and mumbled some spells that would help in the removal of the scars. But she was in for a surprise. Even after using the strongest spell she knew, she couldn’t get the scar off him.

"It is not going away..." her voice was filled with sadness as she traced her finger over the scar that didn’t reduce even a bit. "Oh, you used to have no scar on your chest..."

She remembered the first time she saw his chest this life. She was amazed to see how beautiful his skin was. And now there is this awful scar on his chest that was made by her. She could not accept that.

"Is it ugly?" Maximus asked, brushing a lock of her hair falling on her cheek.

He didn’t mind that scar. He thought he would die. He thought he would never see her again. Although he had some regrets as he didn’t tell her everything he wanted to say, he was willing to let her kill him. He thought his life would end the moment her sword nestles in his chest. But it didn’t.

He is here. And she is near him. This scar is nothing to him.

But he wondered if his scar is not aesthetically pleasing to his dear wife. She looked very sad. And he didn’t like to see her that way.

"Ugly? No!" Alexandra only then looked at his face. "What do you mean?"

"You are sad," he replied.

"I made this..." she didn’t want to reiterate that fact to him. He already lived through it and she didn’t want to remind that cruel thing to him again. To think of it, this scar would remind him of what she did to him.

And thinking about that, she became more terrified.

[It will come up, right? One day, he is going to look at me and say that I was the one who didn’t think twice before stabiing his heart! What should I do?]

And just like that, her eyes started to water once more.

"You’re crying!" Maximus hugged her. "Why?" he rubbed her back.

"I... I had to do it, Max... I know... But the truth... the only way..." she couldn’t find the right words to say to him.

Maximus kissed her head. He could understand what is bothering her dear wife.

"I let you do it. You knew it. You saw it. Did you forget already?" he asked. "I always knew you would do it. I had visions," he said.

It was hard for him to accept when he started to get the visions, but he slowly could accept the truth. And one day he realized that there must be a reason why she is the one doing it. And when he started thinking that way, he could easily compose his heart.

Alexandra looked at him, shocked.

"Visions? Was it Calantar?" she asked.

"You know her?" Maximus asked. He should not be very surprised, but he was. He didn’t remember talking to her about it. But he might have..? He was doubtful.

"Ah... there is a lot I have to talk to you about, Max..." she hugged him. She saw his face and he was not sad.

And it made her relieved. She hoped that he won’t bring this up against her ever. She was intrigued by what he said.

"A lot..?" he said.

"Hmm," she nodded. She could see his smile reducing and his eyes getting sharp. She knew what he is thinking.

"Lot..." he said.

Alexandra saw him leaning towards her, and his lips came closer to hers.
