Survive As The Brute's Wife-Chapter 187: Memories
Alexandra could feel his heart thumping in her hand. She could say with certainty that he is feeling fine and he has the same love he had for her always.
[He is the man who loved me in all his lives! And he is the only man I loved!]
Alexandra’s heart started to pound. She wrapped her arm around his neck."Lot..." she repeated what he said and leaned closer.
*Grrr*
The loud grumble changed the mood of the couple who reunited after a terrifying ordeal. Alexandra looked at Maximus.
"I think we should eat first," Maximus smiled, rubbing her ear. She looked cute with her blushed face, and even her ears have gone red.
Alexandra bowed her head in shame. He is the one who almost died and she is the one getting hungry for no reason.
But she went through a lot in the past day. The last thing she ate was the porridge she ate as supper back in the Uileag Forest.
[Ah, I didn’t even talk to Iorhael! He would be mad...]
Alexandra rubbed her forehead.
"Come on. Let’s go!" Maximus got down from the bed.
He stumbled a bit and Alexandra immediately offered her shoulder to Maximus for support. He held on to her.
"Stretch your limbs a bit," she told him. He hasn’t moved for a long time. He needs to stretch a bit.
"As you say, wife," Maximus did what he was told.
They got down and Alexandra brought the stew and bread from the kitchen to the oak table. As she placed the pot on the table, she could not help but touch the table gently. The table was far from new. It was new when she lived here. She remembered the day her grandfather got the table from the carpenter.
There was a sharp marking on the table and her hands caressed it. "Remember this, Tubby?" she asked.
"I do..." Maximus’ countenance softened and he touched the marking. His memory returned to their past life.
The old knight got drunk and passed out as usual. It was well past their bedtime for six-year-olds. But both of them could not sleep that night. And so they got down quietly to sneak out. They were stunned to see her grandfather lying on the table.
But their eyes ended up at the heavy sword of her grandfather that was lying by his side. They were only allowed to touch skimpy wooden swords until then and the old man never allowed them near his sword.
Both of them looked at each other and their lips curved into a smile. Without even saying one word, they understood the thought of the other. Both wanted to touch the sword.
Slowly they crept near the old man, watching out for every little movement of him. They got closer and they couldn’t help but giggle as they touched the sword.
First, it was she who tried to lift the sword, but she couldn’t even move it. She used both hands to lift the sword and she could only move it a little. And so Tubbby joined her. Even with four little hands trying to lift the sword, it was still heavy, and yet, they could lift it with sheer will.
But they couldn’t place it back smoothly. They tried. But failed. The sword fell on the table with a loud noise and made the marking that still stays even after three hundred years.
"Grandfather got very mad that day," she said and he chuckled.
"Yes... We got punished to work on the farm for a week. Ah! How can I forget!"
Their lips curved to a smile. This house does hold a lot of memories of them together. Their hands caressing the marking touched each other. Alexandra looked at Maximus and his eyes met with hers. His smile reduced as he placed his hand over hers. His eyes became sharp and his breathing got a bit heavy and loud.
She knew what this means.
[He wants me!]
She was happy. She missed him too and it has been a while since they were together.
"Eat," he said. He poured the stew for her into a bowl and passed it to her and got his bowl filled too.
Alexandra obliged. The sun is setting and although she is tired after going through an ardent day, she wanted to spend the night in his embrace.
After dinner, they took a short stroll outside. His hand was on her lower back and he looked up at the sky.
"I didn’t think that I would be here with you again, love. I know I am here because of you," he said. "Thank you."
"Don’t thank me, Max. It was very hard for me... You let yourself be ruled by INanis and I had to..." she blamed him. She was already over the guilt that she pierced him with her sword after seeing his reaction to it. And now she started to complain.
"You are playing the part of my wife very well," he started to laugh holding his stomach.
"I was not joking," she hit his arms playfully. "Why are you laughing?"
"I just remembered something Julius said a long time ago," Maximus said, still unable to break free from his bouts of laughter.
"He told me that his wife has the magical ability to get mad at him about any stuff even if it is her fault. I didn’t think that it would be possible. I thought Flavia wouldn’t like that. But now..." He looked at her and started to laugh once more.
"Well, it was not my fault you were ruled with vengeance," she said.
"I agree." He said, without any hesitation.
Alexandra expected some opposition, but it appeared like he realized that he shouldn’t have focused on his vengeance that much.
She looked at him. But his lips were curved to a smirk. THe same smirk that would make her heart pound with anger.
"You do not mean what you said, don’t you?" she pouted.
"Well, I was told that I should agree with what my wife says even if she is wrong if I want the marriage to work out," Maximus chuckled.
"Was it Julius who said this too?" she asked.
"It was Elrich," Maximus shrugged.
"He was not that wrong though," Alexandra let out a sigh. Her slender fingers gently caressed the ring on her finger. "I too am... I couldn’t find any other way though... I thought about it and my sword... In the end, I could only find your redemption through my sword. I am sorry..."
