Survive As The Brute's Wife-Chapter 188: Not Regretful
Maximus said nothing. He looked at Alexandra and rubbed the small of her back. She didn’t see any anger or disappointment, but only curiosity on his face. She could understand that he wants her to elaborate on why she did what she did.
"When we were fighting Morfan, some of Inanis’ darkness mingled with your soul. You were already filled with thoughts of vengeance and it was easy for Inanis to..." she let out a sigh. "Back then, I contained your darkness inside a spell so that no more of your soul could get corrupted, but..."
"Oh?" he raised his brows. And his face twitched a bit as he was ashamed of himself. "I see..."
His hold on her waist tightened and he pulled her closer to him.
"It was I who invited Inanis to..." he let out a long sigh.
"The spell was not able to contain Inanis and... You know Hashomer can split anything, right? And I figured that the only way to separate your soul from the darkness is by using my..." she pressed her lips and looked at the distance. Her hands trembled thinking the moment her sword entered his chest. "You wanted to make everyone see me as their savior, and I..."
Maximus kissed her temple, pulling her closer to him. She closed her eyes and leaned on him. He could see that she is distressed and he could only assure her by holding her closer.
He was operating exclusively with the ambition of changing the past and getting back at Arioch. He didn’t care about his health and he could now understand how wrong he was. By not caring about himself, he has hurt her so much. He pushed her to go to the drastic extent of using her sword against him.
He imagined himself in her place. He is in no way half as powerful as her. But if there comes a situation that for her survival or her wellbeing, he should hurt her... He will do it. He will absolutely do it if it would save her. But yeah, it would hurt him as much as she would be hurt.
"You didn’t want to do it?" he asked. "Did I hurt you by pushing you?" 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
Thinking back, he regretted letting Inanis rule his soul, but he didn’t regret how she showed herself to the others. History is changed and she will always be remembered as the good one in all her many lives. That is what he wanted.
But it appears that she doesn’t want the same as him. And she is sad which is unacceptable.
"Don’t be sad," Alexandra patted his chest.
She didn’t want to elaborate further. He understood what she did and why she did it and that’s all she needed. She didn’t have the intention to make him feel sad.
"I am sad for you. But don’t feel sad, Lexa... I would have done the same."
He meant it.
Alexandra let out a sigh. It seems like he will never regret his decision to go against Arioch.
"It’s over now..." she said, not wanting to dwell on the past.
"What happened to him?" Maximus asked.
Alexandra shrugged. She didn’t know. He was hurt and won’t survive alone. But she did put a healing spell on him so that he sees the aftermath of the war he so wanted to happen. The war ended without many casualties and nothing worked out as he wanted.
At that time, they heard the screech of a hawk. Maximus squinted his eyes to see a hawk on the branch of the oak tree.
"It’s Zoros..." he mumbled and walked to the tree. He held out his hand and the majestic bird flew and sat on his forearm. "A message," Maximus said and picked up the little metallic tube connected to the leg of the bird.
Alexandra looked at Maximus reading the message. Judging by his expression, it appeared that it was good news.
"Your Paladin is a smart one..." he crunched the paper and threw it on the ground. "He is bringing Arioch with him to Lathlin."
Alexandra nodded. That would be good. He should be kept in the dungeons and should be informed of the changes in the Kingdom. He should know that people are living in peace and harmony in the Kingdom as he is not there to stir the pot anymore.
Alexandra remembered the people in hiding under the tunnels. They will soon learn that their leader failed. She didn’t know how they will try to react to it. Once she returns to Lathlin, her first order of business is to send ambassadors to that tunnel and ensure the wellness of the people living in hiding for ages.
Maximus looked at Alexandra. He very well knew the look on her face. It means that she is thinking about something so deeply. She is contemplating. And once she arrives at a decision, it will become a success.
«But what is she thinking about?»
"Should we leave for Lathlin?" he asked. He is feeling fine He has healed entirely although it was today he got a grave wound. Having a very smart and very powerful wife is very good.
And now he wanted to see the end of Arioch. He wanted to brag to him and see his defeated face spit on it.
"You will not return to Lathlin, Maximus," she said.
He was surprised. "No?"
"NO! You are dead, remember? You were the reincarnation of the Great King and I vanquished the great evei! You wanted that, right?" she asked.
She was confused. She wondered if she thought wrong.
"Yes," Maximus scratched the back of his head. "but I can sneak in. I have a lot to say to-"
"You will not meet Arioch, Maximus!" Alexandra was firm.
"Why not?" Maximus did not like what she is saying.
«Why would she deny my wish?»
"I took a great risk to separate Inanis from you Maximus. If you hold on to your thoughts of vengeance then..." she gulped and her voice started to crack. She couldn’t maintain her stern voice with him.
"...I don’t want to lose you again, love..." her eyes clouded.
"Lexa..." Maximus held her cheek and he was lost for words.
He is still holding on to his revenge and not caring about her.
"Don’t cry. I don’t care what happens to Arioch," he said. "I don’t," he repeated to accept it.
He wanted to brag to Arioch, and make sure that the past is corrected. He had left clues for his ministers to find. When he knew he will die, he made all those plans so that after his death, even if Alexandra doesn’t expose it, the truth will be out.
But he doesn’t want to do so hurting Alexandra.
