Chapter 113: Chapter

Lin Xu and Mo Ying soon arrived, along with the carriage carrying the two rescued girls.

Still seated on the horse, Mo Ying looked down at Lin Xu, who had fallen asleep against him. Her fingers clung softly to his robe, her head resting on his chest like a child seeking warmth.

A faint smile appeared on his lips. For someone who always argued and acted tough, she looked so peaceful now quiet and gentle.

He brushed a loose strand of hair from her face and whispered under his breath, "So stubborn when awake... yet so calm when asleep."

His eyes softened. Females truly are strange, he thought. Most of them never let their guard down... unless it’s someone they trust.

The horse slowed to a stop in front of the inn. Mo Ying stayed still for a moment longer, just watching her breathe quietly in his arms, before gently tightening his hold on her to keep her from slipping.

Fu Han stepped out of the inn the moment he saw the horse approaching. Seeing Mo Ying, he quickly bowed. "Young master."

Mo Ying didn’t reply right away. His eyes were still on the sleeping Lin Xu in his arms.

Without looking away from her, he spoke in a low voice. "Take those two girls to Xu Pavilion."

Fu Han blinked in surprise, following Mo Ying’s gaze toward the carriage behind him. The two rescued girls were still inside, resting with their heads leaning on each other. For a moment, he wanted to ask who they were, but seeing their rough and torn clothes, he guessed right away—they must be slaves.

"Yes, young master," Fu Han said quickly. He turned and walked to the carriage, instructing the driver where to take the girls. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

Meanwhile, Mo Ying slowly got down from the horse, careful not to wake Lin Xu. He carried her in his arms, holding her close in a bridal style. Her head leaned softly against his shoulder as he walked into the inn.

The servants nearby quickly lowered their heads as he passed, none daring to speak. Mo Ying went straight to her room, pushing the door open quietly.

Inside, the room was dim, only the faint light from the lantern glowing. He walked to the bed and slowly placed her down, careful as if she might break.

She shifted slightly, but didn’t wake up. Mo Ying knelt beside the bed, gently removing her shoes one by one. Then he pulled the blanket over her, tucking her in.

He stood up to leave, but before he could take a step, a soft sound came from the bed.

Her hand reached out weakly and caught his sleeve. Her voice was low and sleepy, almost a whisper. "Don’t leave me... you jerk... don’t leave me after just coming back... I won’t let you..."

Mo Ying froze. His eyes flickered slightly as he looked down at her.

For a moment, he just stood there, watching her small face. Then, slowly, he sat back down beside her. His hand reached out, brushing her hair away from her face.

"I’m not going anywhere," he said softly. "Sleep."

But she didn’t let go. Her hand held tightly onto his, gripping as if afraid he would vanish.

Mo Ying sighed quietly. There was nothing else he could do. He adjusted himself and lay down beside her, careful not to wake her. Their hands were still locked together, her fingers wrapped tightly around his.

He stared at her face for a long time, his eyes never leaving her. The faint moonlight coming through the window made her skin glow softly. She looked calm, peaceful... far different from her usual fiery self.

Mo Ying lifted her hand slowly and pressed a small kiss on the back of it. His voice was low, almost a whisper. "I will never let you go again, Lin Xu. I’m strong enough now... strong enough to protect you and never let anyone hurt you again."

He leaned forward and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead.

Then, still holding her hand, he closed his eyes. The night was quiet. Soon, both of them drifted into sleep, their hands still intertwined.

The next morning, soft sunlight slipped through the curtains, lighting up the quiet room. Birds chirped faintly outside, their sound mixing with the gentle rustle of the wind.

Lin Xu stirred slightly, her lashes fluttering before she slowly opened her eyes. For a moment, she didn’t know where she was. The bed felt warm, soft... and then she realized, something heavy was around her hand.

She blinked again and turned her head.

Right beside her, Mo Ying was still asleep. His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead, his face calm and peaceful. Her hand was still tightly held in his, their fingers tangled together.

Her eyes widened a little. What in the world... she thought.

She tried to move her hand, but his grip only tightened. He didn’t wake, just frowned slightly and murmured something in his sleep.

Lin Xu froze, staring at him. His face was so close she could feel his breath against her skin. Heat rushed to her cheeks immediately.

"Let go..." she whispered softly, trying again to pull her hand free.

Still no reaction.

She huffed, muttering under her breath, "Unbelievable... sleeping like a rock after kidnapping me into your bed."

Just then, Mo Ying’s lips curved slightly, a faint smile forming. Without opening his eyes, he said quietly, "You talk too much in the morning."

Lin Xu’s eyes widened. "You’re awake?!"

He opened his eyes slowly, the corners of his mouth lifting into a small smirk. "I’ve been awake since you started staring at me."

"I—I wasn’t staring at you!" she snapped quickly, yanking her hand away. This time, he let go, laughing quietly.

"You were," he said simply.

Lin Xu sat up, glaring at him. "You should’ve left after I fell asleep! What were you doing here?"

Mo Ying sat up too, his tone calm. "You held onto me. What was I supposed to do, throw your hand off?"

Her face turned red. "I—You—That’s not the point!"

He chuckled again, stretching slightly before standing up. "If it makes you feel better, you can pretend nothing happened."

"Nothing happened?! You literally slept beside me!"

He looked at her with a teasing smile. "You make it sound worse than it was or have you forgotten how we used to sleep together before."

Lin Xu grabbed a pillow and threw it at him, "that was in the past and our situation was different back then."

He caught it easily, laughing. "Our situation is still similar except now we can stop deceiving ourselves about a fake marriage."

"Get out!" she shouted, her face burning.

Still smiling, Mo Ying placed the pillow back on the bed and walked toward the door. Before leaving, he glanced over his shoulder. "Breakfast will be ready soon. Don’t keep me waiting too long, wife."

"Stop calling me that!" she yelled, throwing another pillow.

But the door had already closed, leaving Lin Xu fuming and red-faced on the bed, clutching the blanket.

She let out a frustrated sigh, muttering to herself, "That man will drive me insane one day..."
