Chapter 56: Chapter 56 — The Top Ten Heroines Gather

Belle Snow soared through the skies of Ark with her usual calm.

Her figure glided through the air as if the wind itself were carefully carrying her. Her black hair, cut short to her neck, moved gently as she passed between the towering buildings of humanity’s last city. Her reddish eyes, calm and almost indifferent, watched the city from above.

It was a serene gaze. Far too serene for someone known as the number one heroine in the world.

Belle tilted her head slightly as she passed over the main street below. From up there, the city looked peaceful... but her gaze soon dropped toward a side alley.

A group of men had gathered there, and in the middle of them another man was being beaten. Belle descended.

The air compressed around her as her body dropped gracefully, landing right in front of the alley with a soft crack of pavement beneath her boots.

The men froze. One of them still had his fist raised. Another held the jacket of the man they had been beating. Silence fell instantly. Their eyes slowly widened as they recognized her.

"...B-Belle Snow..."

Terror spread across their faces. The number one. The strongest in the world. One of them released the injured man.

"Run!"

They tried to scatter, but Belle didn’t even change her expression. She raised one hand slightly, and gravity fell upon them.

The men’s bodies slammed against the ground as if an invisible mountain had crushed them. All of them were pinned to the pavement, unable to even lift their heads.

Belle walked calmly between them. The man they had been beating was now free, but the pain made him collapse into a seated position on the ground, breathing heavily.

His belongings were scattered nearby. Belle crouched down with her knees together, settling herself with almost elegant delicacy as she gathered the items from the ground.

Then she walked toward him. Before speaking, she brushed a strand of her black hair behind her ear. Her voice was soft.

"Here are your things. You’re safe now."

The man looked at her with wide eyes, still stunned.

"I-I... thank you... thank you so much..."

Belle gave a small nod.

"I’m only doing my duty."

The criminals were handed over to the authorities shortly after. When Belle rose into the air again, several people had already gathered on the street.

"It’s Belle Snow!"

"The number one!"

"Thank you for protecting Ark!"

Praise and admiration followed behind her as she flew away, but her expression didn’t change.

Minutes later, she was crossing above an elevated highway on the outskirts of the city when she saw him. A man stood at the edge of the drop.

People behind him were shouting, but no one dared approach. Belle descended. She flew beside him as naturally as if nothing were unusual. Before the man could react, Belle grabbed the back of his collar.

She lifted him off the ground. The man let out a muffled sound when his face rose to her level. Their eyes met. Belle’s reddish eyes watched him with absolute calm.

Behind them, the crowd murmured in shock.

"I-it’s Belle..."

"The number one!"

Belle spoke with the same calm tone as always.

"Be a good boy. Don’t do something foolish."

The man blinked, completely disoriented. Then Belle leaned slightly closer and gave him a small kiss on the cheek. A slow, lingering one. Then she pulled away.

"Behave."

She held him carefully as she descended back to the ground. The nearby officers quickly approached. Belle gently handed him over.

"Please don’t treat him harshly."

The officers glanced at one another. Belle continued in her calm voice.

"When someone is sad, yelling can make them try it again. I know men can be rough with each other, but please don’t be today. I’m counting on you."

Her reddish eyes watched them.

"Y-Yes, Miss Belle."

The rescued man was still completely in shock. His fingers slowly touched his cheek.

"Th-the number one...", his lips trembled. "Sh-she... kissed me..."

Belle was already rising back toward the sky. Behind her, praise once again spread among the people, but Belle only looked forward.

Not long after, the massive building of the Top 10 appeared in the distance. She slowly descended toward it. As she landed in front of the entrance with the elegance of a princess, she murmured to herself with her usual calm.

"Today I helped fifteen people. Even in humanity’s last city... so many problems still happen."

She entered the building.

She descended several levels until reaching the large central hall. The place was dominated by an enormous oval table with ten chairs around it. Only three were occupied.

Three heroines were talking among themselves. When Belle appeared, one of them looked up. Long, straight white hair with a strand pointing forward from the top of her head, sharp light-blue eyes, perfect posture, and a black coat covering her body and hands.

"Ah, Belle," she said with a slight smile. "You finally arrived."

It was Mery, the number two heroine in the world.

Sitting beside her was a woman with extremely long silver hair, braided into two thick front braids, a tired gaze, and a mutation that gave her the appearance of an elf.

"Hello, Belle," she said with a small wave. "You always arrive earlier than everyone else despite being the most important person here."

It was Aisling O’Connor, ranked sixth.

The other woman was leaning against the edge of the table. Platinum-blonde hair with pink tips, bright electric-blue eyes, and an energetic smile as always. Not to mention that even during a meeting, she wore her signature knight armor.

"Comrade Belle, it honors me to see you in such healthy form. You remain as beautiful and perfect as the porcelain doll I remember."

It was Scarlet Ashford, ranked fifth.

Belle approached calmly and replied to Scarlet.

"And you’re as energetic as ever."

"Ha, ha! Someone has to bring some color to this place," she answered, closing her eyes and flashing a flawless smile.

Belle walked over and took one of the seats at the oval table. Because of its shape, there was no space for a leader’s seat. That highlighted how they were structured.

"Where are the others?" Belle asked.

Mery sighed as she rested an elbow on the table and leaned her cheek into her hand.

"You know how they are. Until we confirm everyone is present in Ark, they won’t come. But they’re already in the city except for two."

Belle lifted her gaze, as serene as ever.

"Who?"

"Number seven and number three." She leaned back in her chair. "They’re still outside Ark. If we’re lucky... the meeting will be tomorrow."

After a brief silence, Mery looked at her with interest and added:

"By the way, did you find anything about Angel?"

Belle slowly shook her head.

"Nothing. I searched every sector of Ark. I entered every public building. I didn’t find a single clue."

Her reddish eyes remained calm. She crossed her arms and continued:

"If she’s in the city... she must be inside a private property. Otherwise I would have found her."

Aisling let out a long sigh from the other side of the table, drawing everyone’s attention.

"I’m tired," she said as she stood up. "I’ll go to my room until the meeting starts. Let me know if something happens."

"Of course," Mery replied.

"Have a lovely nap, Ais! It was wonderful seeing you again. I loved your conditioner—you smell amazing," Scarlet said, slowly waving her hand.

Aisling didn’t respond. She simply left the room.

Scarlet, the number five, leaned further onto the table with a metallic sound from her armor and looked at Belle.

"Hey. How did that Abyss monster get here the other day?"

Belle answered without emotion.

"I don’t know. I don’t know how it got past all the defenses between the Abyss and Ark, but I don’t care. I will kill without hesitation anyone who threatens Ark’s safety, whether monsters or humans."

Her reddish eyes gleamed with absolute coldness.

Scarlet looked at her with shining eyes and admiration as she thought:

’She has the perfect combination of elegance, beauty, class, and a killer spirit. I adore her!’

"Do you know if Angel will attend the meeting?" Belle asked.

Mery nodded.

"Yes. I still have the number Angel gave me. She said I should only call her when all of us are gathered. She won’t answer, but she’ll come immediately once she receives the call."

Scarlet frowned and held her chin.

"That sounds dangerous. What if it’s a trap? Someone could gather all of us... and kill us in a single attack."

Mery let out a small laugh. It wasn’t mocking. It was calm, confident, with a touch of warmth.

"That won’t happen. Our gifts will protect us from any trap. Nothing will be able to touch us, no matter what methods they try."

Scarlet sighed.

"I wish everyone could get along like the three of us. It would be nice to have this kind of atmosphere at work and talk about anything like friends."

Mery rested her chin on her hand.

"Everyone has their reasons for being the way they are. As long as we all keep protecting Ark... it doesn’t matter what they’re like."

She closed her eyes, relaxing. Then she looked at Belle.

"You look more relaxed today. Did something good happen?"

Belle shook her head and played with her golden earring using the fingers of her long, elegant black gloves.

"No, it’s just that... lately everything in my life is going well. I have no problems, my brother is progressing well, my family is peaceful. Everything is in its place and nothing stresses me. I feel... too calm."

Hearing those words spoken with such a distant, uninterested expression almost made it sound like the opposite of what she claimed.

Mery didn’t hesitate to voice her doubt.

"With those eyes, it almost looks like you’re hiding something. That makes me curious. What kind of things would the Goddess of Ark be hiding?"

Belle smiled at her, releasing her earring.

"You flatter me, Mery."
