Ten Thousand Soul Banner: Deceased, do you have any unfulfilled wishes?-Chapter 1039 - 1035: In the Countryside
"Come, come, Grandma has something delicious for you."
Grandma turned and brought out an old food box with a shiny lacquer finish from the house, opened the lid, and it was brimming with various snacks.
Fruit candies, roasted peanuts, crispy cookies, and the local specialty coconut cake—the aroma instantly wafted out.
"Oh~"
Tang Tang, the little foodie, had her eyes light up instantly. With her short legs, she was the first to rush over, her little head hovering above the food box, her nose constantly twitching.
She immediately targeted the colorful fruit candies, reaching out her chubby little hand to grab them. But her hand was too small; she could grasp only two at a time, and after two attempts, she only had four, her little mouth pouting slightly in frustration.
Grandma found it amusing, reaching into the food box to grab a handful of candies and stuffed them into her small front pocket, making it bulging and full.
"han~"
Tang Tang looked up, showing Grandma a charmingly naive smile, with drool flowing from the corner of her mouth onto the bib in front of her chest, hanging as thin silver threads.
"Oh dear, you little glutton." Grandma chuckled, gently scratching her mouth corner with an index finger.
"You haven’t even eaten yet, and you’re already drooling?"
At this moment, Dou Dou also came over, standing on her tiptoes, picking and choosing in the food box, only selecting the candies with pretty packaging and crispy cookies to tuck into her pocket.
"You’re the smartest, always picking the tastiest treats."
Grandma affectionately patted her little head, her tone full of love.
This little rascal, though naughty, exuded a smart aura, making her particularly endearing.
"Duoduo, Xiao Ya, you guys come over too." Grandma called out to the two.
Duoduo was chasing after a hen, the chicken clucking in fear, flapping its wings as it ran.
Xiao Ya was timidly standing in the corner, clutching her clothes, gazing over from afar, not daring to come forward.
"Grandma is calling you."
Ruan Hongzhuang went over, gently took Xiao Ya’s hand, and called out to Duoduo again.
While Grandma was distributing snacks to Duoduo and Xiao Ya, she glanced at Shen Siyuan, sitting on the bamboo chair by the door, and asked softly, "Now that you’re back, do you plan to leave again?"
"Not for now, I’ll stay at home for a few more days." Shen Siyuan replied.
"If you’re not leaving, come back more often, same goes for Ruan Ruan and Taozi..."
"I know, Grandma, I’ll come back every week from now on." Shen Siyuan said.
"No need to come back so often, if it’s too frequent, I’ll get annoyed..." Grandma retorted bluntly.
Ruan Hongzhuang and Taozi, listening from the side, couldn’t help but laugh softly.
Shen Siyuan shook his head helplessly; Grandma always had a soft heart despite her harsh words.
"Cluck, cluck, cluck..."
Suddenly, there was a loud fluttering sound. The hen chased by Duoduo took off, flapping its wings, flew onto the roof, trailing a cloud of dust.
Shen Siyuan watched the scene speechlessly and called out to the two kids, "Duoduo, Dou Dou. Sit down nicely and stop chasing the chicken."
Dou Dou, having just put a cookie in her mouth, asked unclearly, "If we don’t chase the chicken, what can we play?"
This question made everyone burst out laughing, as if apart from chasing chickens and dogs, they had nothing else to do.
Shen Siyuan pointed to the fields in front of the house and said, "Take Tang Tang and Xiao Ya, go for a walk on the paths between the fields, and be careful not to step on the crops."
The fields in front of the house were clearly demarcated, one was a lush rice field, with newly transplanted late rice seedlings growing well. The wavy layers of green flowed in the wind, like a green carpet spread over the land, fresh and pleasant.
On the other side were neatly arranged vegetable gardens, growing various crops, sweet potato vines crawling everywhere with thick, lush leaves.
Winged beans climbed up the bamboo trellis, producing sharply defined green pods.
Yardlong beans hung down like green curtains, while a few tender yellow flower buds hung on the loofah vines.
"Do you see that plot with the creeping plants? It’s planted with sweet potatoes. You can dig up a few and have a taste."
Shen Siyuan pointed to a row of tall plants on the edge of the field banks.
"And that long row by the field banks, do you know what it is?"
Dou Dou and Duoduo shook their heads in unison.
"That’s sugarcane."
Shen Siyuan said with a smile, "You can go and pull two stalks, they’re very sweet."
"Sugarcane?"
The two little ones instantly perked up, no longer bothering about chasing chickens. They pulled along Tang Tang and called out to Xiao Ya, and the four little ones dashed towards the fields.
"Did Grandma plant all those?" Taozi asked curiously, looking at the pastoral scene before her.
"No way."
Shen Siyuan shook his head, "Grandma only planted a small vegetable patch, just enough for herself. These rice fields and vegetable gardens are all farmed by the villagers."
"Is it okay for the kids to pull sugarcane or dig sweet potatoes? Won’t it be a problem?" Taozi asked worriedly.
"Don’t worry, it’s fine."
"It’s fine; they’re not precious items. Kids eating a few sugarcanes, digging a few sweet potatoes, no one will say anything." Grandma said with a cheerful smile.
As they spoke, their gaze inadvertently turned towards the fields.
They saw Tang Tang clutching a thin sugarcane tightly, trying to pull it down, but her strength was too small. Not only did she fail to break it, but she got lifted by the sugarcane, her short legs kicking in the air.
Dou Dou saw this and hurriedly went over to help. But in her effort, instead of breaking the sugarcane, she tugged down Tang Tang’s little pants, revealing her round little buttocks.
"Pfft~"
Unable to hold back, Shen Siyuan, Ruan Hongzhuang, and Taozi burst into laughter. Grandma was also laughing so hard she couldn’t straighten up, her wrinkles bunching up at the corners of her eyes.
In the fields, the laughter of the four little ones, combined with Tang Tang’s giggles, mingled with the sound of wind rustling through the rice leaves, as sunlight fell upon them, shadows intertwined, and time seemed to quietly flow.
Nearing noon, Grandma went to the kitchen to make lunch, but Shen Siyuan promptly stopped her.
"I already spoke with my mom when I arrived this morning. We’ll all eat lunch over there today."
Grandma still wanted to decline, but Shen Siyuan half-dragged, half-supported her to the door.
He then shouted towards the field paths, "Duoduo, stop playing and come back for lunch."
Before long, the little ones came running back from the fields.
The little ones were covered in mud, looking like they had just rolled around in a mud pit.
The prize for the dirtiest went to Tang Tang, whose chubby little hands were black as coal, her shirt front splattered with mud spots, creating a layer of grime.
More amusingly, her cheeks were smeared with a layer of white powder, the cane sugar from gnawing on sugarcane, forming ’whiskers’ like a little cat.
Noticing people’s gaze, Tang Tang grinned, flashing a naive smile, while the cane sugar on her cheeks trembled.
This sight triggered laughter from Ruan Hongzhuang and Taozi. They quickly took out their phones to take photos for keepsakes.
Compared to them, Dou Dou and Duoduo were much cleaner.
Being blessed with a hint of Divine Skills, even with their wild chase through the fields, they didn’t get much dirt on them. Only the hem of their pants got a bit dusty, easily shaken off.
Even Xiao Ya was dirtied, her skirt stained with mud, and her little hands were blackened.
But she, unlike Tang Tang’s calmness, furrowed her little brows tightly, her gaze timid, hands nervously clutching her skirt, thinking she played too hard and got dirty, now feeling anxious, lowering her head fearing rebuke.
Yet, the scolding she anticipated didn’t come.
After taking photos, Ruan Hongzhuang and Taozi fetched a basin of clean water to wash them, before heading out for lunch together.
On the way back, Shen Siyuan watched the kids chasing and playing ahead.
Then he looked back at Ruan Hongzhuang and Taozi, accompanying Grandma, chatting leisurely.
At that moment, Shen Siyuan seemed to feel the power of "time."
