Chapter 24: Monetary Status Change

"How did it go, Inspector Cole?"

[Better than expected. Actually, we'd been trailing those guys for a while but didn't have anything solid until you came into the picture.]

"Huh? Is that so? I didn't think that woman would be that crafty."

[Didn't I tell you not to underestimate people? Reika Fujita may be a low-level fixer, but she's still a fixer. She had connections and was even slowly working her way up to becoming a mid-level dealer. I don't know how, but she was making progress. Not that it matters now. With the overwhelming evidence against her, even her backers have cut ties. She's completely on her own.]

Are you sure you should be telling me all this? Wouldn't this be classified information? Klaus thought as he listened to Inspector Cole's words on the other end of the line. Of course, he didn't voice his thoughts.

After all, he wasn't about to complain. His senior was handing him sweet, juicy information for free. It would be rude to point it out. Besides, he loved the fact that bitch had finally been arrested. His only regret was not being there to see it happen.

Knowing her awful personality, she probably threw a massive tantrum. The thought alone made him smile.

[Hm. Hm. Hm. Alright, that settles it. Everything's wrapped up. You did good, kid. We couldn't have busted her without your help.]

"I'm glad I could help, but... this won't come back to bite me, right?"

[No worries. Your name won't appear anywhere in the official reports. As far as the records go, this was a standard investigation that we cracked on our own.]

Inspector Cole's voice was calm, but Klaus wasn't entirely convinced. The thought of getting tangled up in this mess, considering he worked for the Fujita gang for years, made him uneasy.

"You sure about that? Because I really don't want any surprises down the line."

[Kid, do you think I'd be chatting with you so casually if you were in any danger? Relax. You played your part perfectly, now just sit back and enjoy the results.]

"If you say so."

[That's the spirit. Now, go get yourself a drink or something. You've earned it. The 100 million eddies will be sent to your account in a few weeks. Don't waste it all and make sure to save it! Don't put it in a regular savings account and tie it up as a certificate of deposit!]

"Alright. Alright. I hear you. Also, I'm not a kid anymore, you know. Um... Hello?"

While he was speaking, it seemed Inspector Cole had ended the call on the other end. Klaus frowned slightly because he couldn't get to finish his sentence, but he released a sigh.

At the very least, that Chapter of his life had finally closed.

Still, he hadn't expected the payout to be this high. Maybe it was because they managed to take down both the dealer and the supplier in one go.

It's a good thing I memorized all the warehouse locations and the individual passcodes for the Nanolocks. Could it be that the goddess of fortune is smiling at me?

That lonely thought made him grin like an idiot

Imperial City was a land dominated by science. Supernatural phenomena like 'Awakening' and 'Ascendants' were dissected and explained through logic, no matter how much they belonged to the realm of the occult. declaring them artificial phenomena produced by man and advanced technology.

After all, the city's motto was to attain the intelligence of God.

Of course, since human minds could never truly comprehend the concept of God, they sought to create a vessel capable of stepping into the Territory of God.

The Inhumans known as Ascendants and Cyberhumans were merely a byproduct of that experiment to obtain the Intelligence of God.

Either way, the Sanctuary wasn't a religious institution. Even Christmas was just another excuse for people to have sex.

It was just that kind of city. It was no surprise that people came to see Ascendants as gods instead.

However, when it came to fortune and misfortune, Klaus Martinez was something of an anomaly.

"Anyway, it looks like I don't need to worry about the money anymore."

Now that he thought about it, he should have done this a long time ago. But back then, he had been too scared. Or maybe he just hadn't understood the world well enough. No, it was definitely fear. At the time, he was unawakened and completely powerless.

If he had tried to leak information to the police like he did now, those guys would have noticed something was off. They would have hunted him down and killed him before the cops even got close.

That was just how the Undercity of Imperial City worked.

Blood paid for blood, even at the cost of one's own destruction.

Klaus never understood that kind of thinking. What was the point? Why go so far just to die in the end? It was simply ridiculous and unproductive. At the end of the day, you die, right?

Oh well, it didn't matter anymore.

He had taken down the Fujita gang, recovered more than the money he originally got from the military, and his order would be arriving soon. On top of that, his relationship with his cute succubus servant was improving. Everything was going according to plan, almost too perfectly. It was almost scary.

While thinking about building a sense of humour, Klaus continued his strode to his apartment complex. At the same time, he considered what to do with his newly acquired wealth.

100 million Eurodollars was an absurd amount of money. That translated to roughly 15 billion Japanese yen.

It was more than enough to live comfortably without working for the rest of his life. Moving out of his rundown apartment seemed like the logical choice, but since he'd be heading to the academy soon, it would be a waste. Still, he needed new clothes as his current ones were starting to wear out. That included other essentials as well.

Ascension Academy would be filled with people from all sorts of backgrounds, especially members of the Imperial Clans. Even if he was on the lower end of the sector, he had to at least look presentable.

Not only that, but he also needed to buy clothes for his roommate. He had definitely underestimated her proportions and ended up buying things that were too small for her. The upper wear was fine, but the real problem was her lower body.

Her huge butt and wide hips were obviously an issue.

I doubt she'd tell me her measurements even if I asked. There has to be something similar to a demon realm, right? Surely, they aren't completely clueless about this kind of thing.

I'll have to take her to the shopping mall to get new clothes, but that also means telling her that I have money.

Hmm. I don't have to tell her I have 100 million eddies. I'll just say I have enough to cover her needs, but not to spoil her with everything she wants.

Someone that clueless and curious would definitely have an endless list of wants. He was going to be her partner, not her parent. If he wasted all his money spoiling that succubus rotten, it would do him no good in the end.

That was something he definitely couldn't allow!

Klaus sighed and checked the time on his smartphone. Apparently, it was [8:45 PM]. It was still early by Imperial City's standards. The city was relatively safe, as criminals couldn't commit crimes in the open, allowing people to move about freely.

Needless to say, just because the crime rate was incredibly low didn't mean crime didn't exist. It simply occurred less frequently than in other cities.

But the young Awakened had nothing to fear. If it was just some random street punk or a cyber-enhanced psycho, he could handle it without much trouble.

The problem was that he didn't seem to have a destination in mind.

He didn't want to head home too early, especially when he just received 100 million fucking eurodollars!

Surely, there had to be something he could do to pass the time. Speaking of which, he was having trouble containing his sexual frustration from staying with that damn succubus. Perhaps he could head to Afterlife, located at the Outer Ring (Residential and Corporate Zones) of the Sanctuary. It was formerly known as the Public Assistance Bureau, but after its collapse, nobody knew what to do with it. He had heard that the Civil Authorities wanted to reopen it under some sort of corporate sponsorship, but the Sanctuary Council declined the offer.

He didn't know the exact details, but it was later turned into a different type of social service, a middle-class brothel. Since prostitution had been legalized in the early 2000s, the brothel became an excellent legal source of income.

Apparently, the sex workers there charged a staggering 3,000£$ for a single session!

He had overheard this from Shin Fujitsa and his buddies, who had recently visited. Those bastards were really wasting 3,000£$ just because they wanted to have sex.

Damn bastards. If I did something like that, wouldn't I have already gone broke? Klaus thought bitterly.

Of course, he had no desire to visit a brothel to satisfy his sexual frustration or waste away money. It was activities like that that made a person go broke. If he started doing that, he knew for certain that he would develop a bad habit!

So what should he do?

As Klaus tilted his head at that thought, he suddenly felt a vibration from his right pocket. He shoved his hand inside and pulled out his smartphone, then switched it on.

When he did, he saw that he had received a message from someone. It was a familiar name.

[Sasha: Hey, wassup. Do you wanna come to my place and watch a movie? I'm dying of loneliness here ^^.]

"W-What? A message from Sasha? And she wants me to come over...?" Klaus blinked like he had seen something truly strange. Certainly, he wasn't expecting such a message.

Well, it wasn't completely unbelievable. He and Sasha would casually chat like this all the time. But the problem was that ever since that incident two weeks ago, where he had been drained like a squeezed lemonade, she had been calling him over more frequently. It was as if, after crossing a certain line, she had decided that holding back was meaningless.

Recalling those times, Klaus inadvertently trembled. Despite being an Awakened, that woman had always overpowered him in that department.

Logically speaking, he should be the one overpowering her. Yet, that was not the case at all.

That should be impossible, right? Because it made no sense at all!

He became even more conflicted. On one hand, his urges were growing stronger, demanding satisfaction. On the other hand, he wasn't too keen on ending up completely drained.

After mulling over it for a few seconds, temptation slowly overtook his reasoning, and with a sigh, Klaus gave in.

[Klaus: Alright. I'll be on my way.]

"Ugh... I can't feel my legs...." Klaus, looking utterly drained of his blood, sluggishly walked toward his apartment complex and climbed the stairs.

As expected, there was no winning against Sasha when it came to sex. At first, he had assumed the issue was his stamina, but he had held out for quite a while, even managing to take the lead at the start. Sasha, apparently, enjoyed being taken from behind, so they had gone at it in the doggy style position.

That was, of course, until she completely turned the tables on him.

Try as he might, he simply couldn't overpower her. It didn't matter how much he improved or how long he lasted, when it came down to it, Sasha was an unstoppable force in that department.

With a weary sigh, Klaus finally reached his apartment door, fishing out his key to unlock it.

As he stepped inside, his eyes landed on the sight of a peacefully sleeping figure sprawled across his bed. It was the purple-haired succubus, Briar.

A quick glance at the alarm clock told him it was [11:06 PM], so he wasn't too surprised that she had dozed off. What did surprise him, however, was the state of the apartment. It was clean.

Did she... tidy up while he was gone?

Briar had never shown any interest in cleaning before, nor had she ever lifted a finger to do anything remotely domestic. So the fact that the place was spotless left him mildly stunned. Perhaps, with nothing better to do while waiting for his return, she had idly cleaned before eventually drifting off to sleep.

"Seriously, what the hell? I'm really terrible, aren't I?" Klaus muttered weakly, rubbing his temple. After a moment of hesitation, he let out a resigned sigh. "Maybe it wouldn't hurt to spoil her a little..."

With that, he locked the door, dragged himself toward the bed, and collapsed onto the mattress, immediately passing out.

This was a well-deserved rest.
