The Alpha's Omega Mate-Chapter 120: Into thin air.
~Zarek’s POV~
"She left."
I still do not understand what those words meant but I found myself pushing through the halls of the house. Running through the pack like there was death on my tail, and with my heart pounding as I went to the only place where my wolf urged me to. Where my body pushed me to.
To Dahlia.
To the pack’s hospital.
My breath came in shallow pants as I ran through the streets, ignoring the way my people stopped to glance at me in surprise, some bowing, some muttering greetings, and others beaming confused smiles at me.
But right now, I didn’t care about them.
I didn’t even care about the blondie that was struggling to catch up with me. But she couldn’t. Not when I was running like a maniac in rut. Not when it wasn’t my legs moving anymore, but Moartea’s.
And not when he was urging me to move even faster, as if I wasn’t already too fast as it was.
When I arrived at the hospital, I ignored everyone around and went straight to Dahlia’s ward. And good gracious, my breath hitched in my chest. Even my heart stopped for a minute.
It was empty. Her bed, the room. It felt as though she was never here.
Like she had never been here before.
Her scent was gone.
And Moartea howled like the beast that he was, his agonizing cry causing the entire structure to tremble until specks of dust rose into the air.
My chest caved in itself, my body trembling as I slowly made my way to her bed— her now empty bed— which was the only thing that surprisingly still held some of her scent.
I picked up the small pillow and took in a deep breath, one that was so deep, it made the walls of my chest tremble slightly.
It almost calmed me down— almost, until I realized that her scent was too faint on it. It wasn’t enough. And then I became enraged all over again.
"Where the hell is Grandma Lupe?!" I snarled.
Anger rose from the depths of my being like the birth of a storm. A part of me feared that the crazy old lady may be behind this, that she had fled with Dahlia, but as soon as the question left my lips, the devil waltzed into the room with a single rose stalk in her silvery hair and three large mangoes in her hands which instantly dropped to the floor as soon as she saw me.
When her eyes met mine, she froze, her eyes widening, she asked; "Where’s Dahlia?"
My eyes thinned into slits. My nostrils flared. I snapped; "I should be asking you that question!"
Grandma Lupe looked visibly annoyed by my tone or question; I didn’t know which. Her strange eyes glowed a fierce red color as she glared straight at me. She snapped; "No, I should be asking you, child. I met you here after all!"
"And where are you coming from?" I asked, my eyes raking over her body in frustration.
She scoffed. "From the market. I didn’t intend to buy anything but when I got there and saw these large mangoes, I figured that they’d be appreciated by Dahlia and her child. Which brings me back to my question, where is she?"
Now, I was royally confused. She didn’t look like she was lying. Tartarus, she even had evidence to back up her claims.
My forehead creased with a frown as the door suddenly pushed open, and my eyes snapped up immediately, as if I was half expecting the intruder to be Dahlia. But unfortunately, it wasn’t her but Dr Ava clutching a tray of a weird gooey substance and a frown on her face.
"Alpha," she bowed slowly, "what brings you here?"
Her voice was calm— deceptively too calm, it made something underneath the surface of my skin itch with irritation. I eyed the substance with her suspiciously and bit back; "What are you doing here?"
She smiled. "I am here to do my last check for the day on Dahlia and my grandmother. Is there a problem, your Grace?"
"Dahlia seems to be missing." I snapped, not even bothering to continue with this charade. "A girl— Sadie came earlier to tell me that she left. And I cannot find her here!"
As soon as I said those words, a deafening silence descended upon us. Grandma Lupe seemed hurt. Even Dr Ava looked as though she’d just been told that it was the end of the supernatural world.
Glassy blue eyes snagged up to mine, and the owner— the older lady who apparently was one of the only few people that managed to defile me and get away with it— croaked out through trembling lips; "I don’t believe that." She said with resolve. "She probably was only went for a walk like she always does. She will come back."
But I wasn’t convinced. I spat; "Her smell is fading quickly. I don’t think she just went for a walk. I think she used a cloaking spell."
"That’s impossible!" Grandma Lupe yelled, "where will she get it from?!"
"Beats me!"
"But you know what I mean. Cloaking spells are not so easy to—" Just as she was talking, the little birdie who had come to inform me about Dahlia’s absence ran into the room. She was panting uncontrollably and sweating so much, I almost feared she would hyperventilate.
Grandma Lupe immediately rushed over to her side, cradling her arm in hers and pushing a cup of water into her shaking hands. She commanded her in a stern voice; "Drink." And the girl immediately did as told, gulping down the water like her life depended on it.
We all waited until she caught her breath before Grandma Lupe slowly guided her to a nearby chair. But I was too impatient for all of these. I asked; "Sadie, you said Dahlia left. Do you have any idea where she must’ve gone?"
I watched Sadie blink up at me in confusion. Her lips parted slowly but as if suddenly processing her words in her head, she clamped it together. She whispered; "I have no idea."
"You have no idea you told me she left or you have no idea where she went?"
"I have no idea where she went." She answered quickly. "I wanted to come see her earlier but found her packing a small bag. She told me she was going but didn’t tell me where so I decided to inform you myself."
Something about Sadie didn’t feel right. Something about her words made me feel like she was suddenly glitching like a dysfunctional device.
One minute, she’d been sobbing uncontrollably, telling me about how Dahlia was about to leave the pack. To leave her. To leave me. She had even blabbered about being helped by someone and that was why I had attacked Grandma Lupe in the first place; But now, she was acting differently. Strange even.
Now, even her words were no longer adding up.
"She’s in shock!" Dr Ava cried out, "she’s hyperventilating!" And my eyes widened when I noticed her swaying slightly. Her eyes drooped, the color instantly draining from her face.
And then she crashed to the floor like a pack of cards.
But unsurprisingly, she was the least of my concerns. Call me the devil but I didn’t stop to check what was wrong with her, I didn’t even say another word as I ran out of the room with the hopes of catching traces of Dahlia’s scent outside.
I didn’t.
It felt like she’d disappeared into thin air.
Then, like a freight train, a thought suddenly rammed into my head. "Amara!" I muttered desperately as I made my way back to the fortress, in search of the only person that could lead me to Dahlia.
But fuck me, she wasn’t there either. She’d also disappeared without a trace.
Fuckfuckfuckkkk!
