The Betrayed Heiress's Second Comeback-Chapter 57: Ch : The Candidates are all Weird
"This list is...?"
I asked as I took a quick look. The list was not bad, but the talents on it were not what I was truly looking for in our first contract either. My fingers tightened around the paper in irritation, crinkling the edge slightly.
As much as I hated to admit it, our first actor needed to be both hot and sensational. He could not have any relationship history or drama. He needed to be a clean-cut person no one would be able to find faults with.
The competition in the entertainment world was brutal and one misstep could sink a whole company.
I, for one, had nothing against actors or idols dating. It was their life and they deserved love and happiness as well. But business was business and not all fans were as understanding of people’s....personal preferences.
"So, have you decided which one you want to choose?"
Damian asked, looking proud of himself and I pushed his list aside before I picked up my tablet.
His jaw twitched when the list slid across the table, but he forced a smile.
"I have short-listed three people. I would like you to run a background check on them before we approach them. Anything about their past and conflicts will help us narrow the choice down."
I told Damian and he frowned at my choice. His eyes went over the three people I had picked before he pushed the tablet back toward me.
The tapping of his fingers against the table betrayed his displeasure despite his calm face.
"Aren’t these kids too young?"
He asked and I nodded.
"Yes, and that’s why I want to sponsor them. They don’t have another backer yet, so there is not much external influence over them. They are also good-looking and will likely get far if we give them a little push."
The main reason I had selected these kids was because they had no backers. They would be completely under my management and influence. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
It was not the most noble idea, but it would be the best course of action for my business.
"Hmm, alright. If that’s what you want, then I will have my people run a background check on these kids. I will give you the information tomorrow."
Damian promised me as he took note of the information I needed him to find. Things were finally going my way...but somehow, a part of me felt a little worried.
Damian’s eyes lingered on my face just a second too long, like he knew something I didn’t.
’Why am I having this unsettling feeling in my heart. Oh well, I am sure things will be just fine...’
I told myself before I went to sleep. Tomorrow was going to be a big day for me...
Or so I thought.
But Damian had some...unexpected news for me during breakfast.
"I looked into the kids you wanted me to...here is the information. But I am afraid that we won’t be able to bring any of them to our side."
Damian sounded serious when he told me this. I immediately reached for the report he was giving me and took a look.
I almost spilled my morning coffee in panic while snatching the papers.
"T-This is...how is that possible?"
I asked while looking down at the contents of the report.
One of the kids had decided to quit acting because he had gotten admitted into a top university with a scholarship. The second one had found a sponsor yesterday and already signed a contract. And the third one? He had a huge scandal yesterday, marking his career’s end before it even began.
Somehow, it all felt like a deliberate plan by someone to sabotage me. But no one even knew I was getting into the entertainment sector...except...
’Ugh, now I am thinking too much. What would Damian even gain by doing all this? I am sure I am just overthinking things here...’
Damian’s slight smile made me feel guilty for even suspecting him. Anyway, the situation was out of my control now and I had no backup planned.
"So, what are we going to do now? I also ran a background check on the people I found yesterday as well. Would you like to check that list as well?"
Damian asked me and I sighed before accepting the offering. I had already rejected the people from Damian’s list, but a second look won’t be a bad idea. Especially since my first choices were out.
But no matter how much I looked at this list, no one stood out to me like those first three did.
I kept flipping the papers just to fill the silence, but nothing clicked.
"This is not good enough. I guess I will look around different audition sets for today and take a look around."
I told Damian and his smile instantly faded from his face. His shoulders tensed like he had been hit by a threat rather than a suggestion.
"You are...going to take a look yourself? I will accompany you as well. So, where are we going and when?"
Damian asked in a neutral voice seconds before he got a call. It was from his secretary Emma.
He quickly picked up the phone and gave her orders.
"Emma, reschedule anything I had for today and...are you questioning me?"
I strained my hearing and picked up Emma’s panicked voice. She was saying something about ’important meetings’ he could not miss and shareholders etc. but Damian looked like he was not hearing her speak.
His gaze never left me during the call, like the rest of the world didn’t matter.
I felt a little touched that he was willing to cancel things for me like this. But ultimately, I did not want him to do that. Tanking his career was the last thing I needed to happen.
"Damian, you should go to the meetings. I will be fine for a single day. If you are so worried, then send a bodyguard with me."
I told him and he still did not look happy. But Emma was still speaking from the other side of the phone, pleading with her boss to attend the meetings.
"Fine. I guess I have no choice but to attend the meetings. I will ask Jason to accompany you. Make sure to tell him if there is anything you need and stay close to him. He might not look like it, but he’s a great fighter."
Damian tried to assure me...but his voice sounded a little strange. The mood had turned weird and I quickly finished my food to get up and leave for my day.
His eyes followed me until I exited the dining room, sharp and unreadable.
Jason was waiting for me outside my house and he immediately welcomed me by opening the door for me.
"Welcome miss. Let’s have a good day today."
I took a deep breath before stepping into the car, unaware of how much this day was going to change everything.
