The Betrayed Heiress's Second Comeback-Chapter 70: Ch : It’s a Misunderstanding
Rose’s POV
’Tsk, these stupid people do not know how to do anything. What do they mean by saying they lost the contract for the next big movie and that the director no longer wants to cast Iris? Wasn’t she the rage just a few days ago?’
I slammed my phone down on the desk, the screen still glowing with bad news.
Somehow, somewhere, things had gone extremely wrong, and I could not tell where. Everything and everyone was pissing me off.
Even the quiet hum of the office felt like it was mocking me.
The reason I was so angry in the first place was because things had been going wrong for me for the past few days...and it all started with those articles from the reality show.
Many of them framed me as losing my touch and hold on the industry and praised Jenna and her partner, Damian Black.
Every headline felt like a direct slap to my face.
Due to the pressure from my side (and a few bribes), we were able to stop that news from spreading. That should have been the end of things...
Or so I had foolishly thought.
But then Iris had gone out and decided to try and bully a newcomer in the industry, and someone had posted it online. What’s worse? It had to be someone connected to Jenna, of all people.
Because of this blunder on Iris’s part, investors and other people had started to pull out of projects that had her name.
The public was on Iris’s side, but the producers did not want to take the risk of casting her and creating friction with Damian Black, of all people.
Damian’s name carried more weight than they would ever admit.
’This would not have been a problem had the other party not had connections to Damian Black...but maybe this is a good opportunity. If we bring down the reputation of NYC Entertainment before they can take off, it will help us out a lot.’
I clenched my fists as the thought settled in.
It was time to back Iris...just enough for it to look professional. After all, there would be no point in all this if Iris did end up getting ruined.
The first thing I needed to do was call for my secretary. He was one person I knew who was extremely talented at spreading rumors and getting people on his side.
He was also the reason I had been able to push Jenna out of the office this quickly. That alone made him indispensable.
"Rose, you called for me? What can I help you with today? And you do know that it is going to cost you, my dear?"
The man asked as he slid into the room and immediately headed toward my side. He wasted no time in slipping his arms around my own and rubbing his cheeks against mine.
I reciprocated the gesture, even though there was no fondness behind either of our actions. We were both just using each other for our own benefit.
Feelings had no place in arrangements like ours.
"Rick, I need a favor from you. One of our actresses, Iris, has been attacked online. I need you to help her out a little."
I asked the man clinging to me, and he finally pulled away a little bit and gave me a look.
His interest was immediately piqued.
"Oh...this sounds like fun. Tell me more about what I need to do?"
Rick asked in an amused voice, and I decided to answer him. But before I could tell him what to do, the door to my office opened, and Karl entered.
The timing could not have been worse.
"Rose, about that party...what is going on here?"
He asked as he looked between me and Rick, and I immediately pushed Rick away from me. My actions looked a little guilty, and I immediately tried to explain myself.
My heart skipped in irritation rather than fear.
"Karl, this is not what it looks like..."
I told Karl, but my voice sounded guilty. Karl gave me a look but did not say much regarding what he had just seen.
Somehow, I could tell that he was disappointed, but his silence did not tell me anything else about his mood.
That uncertainty unsettled me.
"Here, this is the party invite I was talking about. Please be ready to head out with me...and if you cannot make it, inform me beforehand. I will arrange for someone else to accompany me."
"No, Karl, wait-"
Before I could say anything more, Karl left the room. I could only turn toward Rick and blame him for what happened.
My frustration needed a target.
"Tsk, look at what you did. What if Karl decides he does not want to talk to me ever again? Will you take responsibility for this?"
I suppressed my voice as I pointed at Rick to explain what he had done. This was all his fault, not mine, that Karl had left me like this.
"Hey, calm down. This is your problem with your fiancé, not mine. If he cannot even trust you like this, what makes you think whatever you have is going to last-?"
"Because I am not Jenna. I have my fiancé completely under my control. Ugh, just you wait and see...just focus on helping Iris out for now."
I commanded before I left the room to go after Karl. I could not afford to lose him over this. I had worked far too hard to get to where I was at the moment.
I wasn’t about to let everything slip through my fingers.
"Karl, wait for me. I need to explain something to you. Things are not as you saw them..."
I followed Karl, and he stopped to allow me to catch up with him. It made me feel safe because this meant that he still cared for me and would forgive me. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂
"Things...are not as they seem? Ah, they surely are not. But what does it matter if they are or are not? I just...don’t want to talk to you right now, Rose."
Karl told me as he started to walk once more without looking back. I could only look at him, now frustrated.
"Hey, what about the party?"
I asked, and Karl replied without looking back.
He didn’t even slow his steps.
"I will pick you up tomorrow for it. Make sure you dress in green, as that is the dress code. Until then, do not try to contact me."
He told me, and that was the end of our conversation.
I stood there alone, already planning my next move.
