The Billionaire Can't Escape His Shameless Heiress Wife!-Chapter 11: Outside His Doorsteps
"Well, well," Ace drawled, lazily leaning against the carved railing. "Who would have thought I’d witness someone’s romantic tryst in broad daylight?"
Kaelian sat behind him, the cane in his hand tapped once against the wooden floor. He didn’t bother to turn, looking over the book sprawled on his desk.
Ace hooked his finger on the lanyard attached to the binocular in his hand and turned around. "Guess who I’m talking about?"
Kaelian’s expression remained uninterested. He flipped to the next page and read the words inside it. But just as he finished reading, a shadow suddenly covered the file he was reading.
Raising his head, Kaelian silently looked at him with a look of impatience.
If anyone were to receive that look from him, they would shiver in fear and instantly retract whatever action they had done to make him look at them like that.
Unfortunately, Ace had grown accustomed to Kaelian’s personality. Just this wouldn’t be enough for him to be afraid of him.
Kaelian fixed his gaze on him as he closed the book on his desk. "What is it?"
Ace beamed once he got his friend’s attention.
He dramatically sighed and said, "If you weren’t so engrossed with your book, would you even need to ask?" Before Kaelian could say something to shut him up, he quickly added, "It’s that woman. Isabella Harrington."
"Her?"
"It was indeed her!" Ace exclaimed, a grin tugging on his lips as if he couldn’t wait to tell him what he saw. But he was disappointed to see that there wasn’t any expression on Kaelian’s face as if he wasn’t listening to him.
Ace, however, didn’t give up. "I just saw her coming out of that house over there. A man hugged and patted her on the head. Do you think that’s her lover?"
Kaelian tilted his head slightly, appearing more uninterested than he was earlier. "And?"
"And," Ace continued, dramatically waving his hands. "Wasn’t she sent by her family to seduce you? Aren’t you upset that even before they could succeed on their plans, they’re already giving you a green hat?"
"Ace."
"Hm?"
"You seem very idle. Do you want me to send you to the headquarters to do some work?"
His words froze Ace from his theatrics. An unpleasant memory instantly flashed across his eyes as he realized he had just stepped on a landmine.
Retreating until he felt the railing against his back, Ace wondered if it was safer to jump from a seven-story pagoda or stay in the same place with Kaelian.
The dashing brows of Kaelian knitted together. Just as he was about to open his mouth, Ace quickly raised both his hands to surrender.
"Tha—that... You know I didn’t mean that." Ace said. He relaxed when Kaelian retracted his gaze to open his book again.
Once again, the place returned to its usual peacefulness.
However, it didn’t last long—
While the silence lasted, Ace spent those few minutes thinking about what he saw. A nagging feeling made him review it. Especially when he saw that man with Isabella.
"I wonder why he looks a bit familiar..." he mumbled. "Where did I see him?"
But even when he spent an entire minute to browse through his memories, he was unable to find an answer. A man with a European features and bronze skin living in Wisteria Compound wouldn’t go unnoticed. Plus, with the kind of appearance, Ace was sure that the man was not short of people he could sleep with.
Yet, he dared to meet Isabella in a romantic tryst.
"Could it be that he has unique tastes? The more unremarkable, the more he likes it?" Ace continued rambling. He was a bit sad that Kaelian didn’t have a similar personality to his, or else, they would’ve spent the entire time discussing this.
Just as he was about to end his line of thought, Ace suddenly cried out in alarm as a thought entered his mind.
"Shit! I knew there was something strange about her!"
Kaelian didn’t want to bother with him. But thinking that this might have something to do with the assassination attempt the Harrington family sent on his doorstep, he couldn’t help but look at him.
"Kael—you won’t believe this," Ace hurried back to Kaelian’s side. "I saw her leave in the pod."
Kaelian’s finger that had wanted to flip the page paused.
He remembered there was a small vehicle parked somewhere in Wisteria Compound. He had once seen it rolling on the road when he was driving back, but he couldn’t see who was inside it.
"Exactly! The pod," Ace waved him to lean closer. When Kaelian didn’t move, he got a bit closer. "Remember when I tried to ask the management if I can use it but they refused? They told me they don’t have access to it. In the entire Wisteria Compound, only three people were said to be able to ride that thing!"
Ace pulled back to pace on the wooden floor of the pagoda. He rubbed his chin in contemplation. "So, how the hell did little Miss Ordinary step inside it like it was an Uber? Someone inside must be helping her... Maybe the Harringtons found a strong backer and used this method so she can proceed with the plan to seduce you?"
It wasn’t a far-fetched assumption. The Harrington family might have lost their potential after the previous head of the family died ten years ago. But they didn’t fall apart. Perhaps out of desperation, they attached themselves to someone who wanted to harm Kaelian and the Veyron family. Maybe a dangerous adversary who had a deep grudge against Kaelian?
If it were truly the case, Ace became even more vigilant. "This little Miss Ordinary really is something..."
Kaelian let Ace finish contemplating the situation before he said, "You’re about half-right."
"Ah?" Ace was confused. In which part did he go wrong?
What Ace had come up to had some sense to it. Maybe others would agree with him.
But Kaelian didn’t think so.
The pod was indeed an exclusivity for three people. However, it wasn’t a secret who the three people were. Two of those were residents of the compound like them. Both were men and had a clean background. They don’t have any connection with the Harrington family. They were also rarely seen and suspected of having a close relation with the owner.
From what he knew about that pod, even if one of the two were to scan their fingerprints and allow an outsider to ride it, the pod still wouldn’t work because one’s fingerprint wasn’t enough. The system itself would recognize and choose who could control it.
And so, Kaelian removed them from his suspicion.
Now, only one person was left.
It was the owner of Wisteria Compound, whose identity and gender were never revealed.
But, perhaps, he could unravel their identity soon.
"What the—" Ace’s voice rose as he leaned against the wooden railing. "Kaelian, you have to see this!"
When Kaelian didn’t do as he said, Ace jabbed a finger down and exclaimed, "She’s here! That little Miss Ordinary is right outside your doorsteps!"
Kaelian frowned. He rose from his chair and moved with smoothness that didn’t belong to someone who was blind.
Looking downwards, he could see the pod that had been occasionally driving around the street. In the past, he would only glance at it with indifference, not caring who were among the three were using it. But after hearing that Isabella was inside it, he couldn’t hold the urge to look.
Across the house, the pod was parked right in the middle of the street.
Isabella had unknowingly stepped out of it, with her facing his house.
From what he could see, her appearance remained as unremarkable as the woman who had handed the glass of wine at the party. He wouldn’t notice her if she passed him by.
Except those eyes...
That seemingly somewhat bare and naked longing and desire.
He wouldn’t mistaken that pair of eyes anywhere.
This was simply too unrestrained. Does she always show such a gaze when no one is looking at her?
Kaelian narrowed his eyes, and a flicker of thought flashed past behind them.
