Chapter 13: Better at Pretending

The Harrington mansion woke in chaos.

Doors banged from the hallway and hurried footsteps echoed as they stomped against the floor. Several people found themselves standing in front of Isabella’s room, but no one took the first move to open the door.

In their hearts, panic and fear filled it.

They were unaware of what had transpired inside or what the head of the family had planned for their eldest young miss. The only thing they knew was that if something were to happen to her, they would be heavily implicated.

As servants and maids hired by the Harrington family, they were well aware of their duties. Aside from the universal duties people like them would do, they were also reminded to keep watch on Isabella Harrington’s actions and safety. If anything were to happen, they should immediately report it to the head butler or her uncle, Bard Harrington.

At first, they thought that the Harrington family was treating Isabella really well. After all, why would they instruct them to watch over her so tightly if that weren’t the case?

But soon, they realized that they were quite far from the truth.

Compared to the Harringtons’ lavish care and indulgence of Vanessa, their treatment of Isabella was more like that of an unwanted illegitimate child. It was as if, for as long as they could give her something, it would be enough to say they cared for her. It was like treating a puppy to a meal only to abandon it.

Aside from her safety, no one would question how the servants and maids treated Isabella.

"What are you still standing outside the door?" Much to everyone’s relief, Bard finally appeared with his wife just right behind him. He ordered, "Open it!"

Bard pinched his eyebrows tightly as he threw the crowd a glare. But deep inside him, he was filled with anxiety. Because this wasn’t part of his plan. He hadn’t meant to have a crowd witness tonight’s event.

Right behind him, his wife, Carla, also shared the same thoughts as him. But she was a better actor than her husband.

Passing him by, Carla pushed the door open before the servants could. Her face was pale and her lips quivered with worry and fear of what her precious niece might have experienced for her to scream during the night.

"Isabella!" Carla’s voice shouted in concern. "What happened, dear?"

But as her foot stepped into the room, she halted from advancing as she was shocked at what Isabella’s room looked like right now.

The usually neat and spotless room had become disorderly.

This... was this absolutely necessary? Carla sneaked a glance to her husband, who shared the same confusion as her.

They had specifically told Mark to only steal the necklace. So, there was no need to make such a mess!

Carla looked down at the things scattered all over the floor. Just thinking about spending money to replace all of them brought pain to her head!

However, she regained her composure quickly. She directed her gaze toward Isabella, who seemed restless while sitting on the edge of the bed.

Carla crossed the room and reached her side. "Are you alright?"

Isabella shakily shook her head, hugging her knees to her chest. "Yes, but I’m... I’m just shaken after what happened."

Carla placed her hand on Isabella’s shoulder and asked carefully, "What exactly happened?"

"I... I don’t know. I just woke up to use the restroom, but when I opened my eyes, the room was already like this!" Isabella bit her finger in fear as she said.

Let’s see who’s better at pretending. She thought. However, her expression didn’t change, and she still looked like she was still restless about what had happened.

"Don’t worry." Bard reached them and comforted her. "I will have some people look around and find out what happened here!"

"That’s right. Your uncle will surely capture whoever did this!" Carla nodded and agreed with her husband. But who knew what was truly inside her mind?

To make good on his promise, Bard sent everyone away, leaving him and his wife alone with Isabella inside the room. Only he and his wife knew that no matter how much they searched, they wouldn’t find what they were looking for as he had already instructed Mark to leave the mansion as soon as he got the necklace.

"Who would have thought the Harrington mansion would be a target of a thief!" Carla sighed. She turned to Isabella and asked her, "Did you look at your things yet? Did the thief take anything here?"

Isabella hesitated, rising from the bed with urgency. "Let me check."

She moved familiarly in her room, checking for anything that might have been taken.

Seeing this, Carla shot her husband a look while their niece wasn’t looking at them. Understanding without hearing what she said, Bard shrugged innocently. He really didn’t know what went wrong. He had to go to Mark and question him first.

Before this, he clearly told him not to take anything else. That lowly driver really must be out of his mind.

As they exchanged words with only their eyes, a cry interrupted them.

"My necklace!" Isabella turned to face them with tears flooding her cheeks. "It’s gone!"

"What?" Bard and Carla gasped, walking towards her.

"Are you sure it’s gone?" Carla asked her, almost forgetting to hide the anticipation and relief on her face.

Isabella nodded.

The couple was fully satisfied. With their plan succeeding, there was no need to worry about their losses. The ten million dollars that was given away returned into their hands!

Carla held back the urge to smile. She forced a sympathetic look on her face and consoled Isabella, "Never mind it, Isabella. We’ll find a replacement for the necklace. It’s a relief you’re safe and sound."

Uncle Bard added with a nod, "Exactly. Coincidentally, I bought a few sets of jewelry for you and Vanessa. Tomorrow, I’ll hand it over to you over breakfast. Let’s treat tonight’s incident as a blessing instead."

The two cooperated with each other’s words. They quickly matched that no one would find fault in their character. If other people could see this, they would really believe that the couple truly cared about Isabella and treated her like their daughter.

If it were in the past, when Isabella was still blind to their hidden plans, she might’ve cried herself to tears for their generosity and affection. She would’ve been fooled for a long time.

After her parents died, Isabella not only lost them, but she lost her entire world. She had desperately looked for the same warmth. But all she received was pain and abandonment.

If everyone around her were only sincere with their feelings for her, she wouldn’t have been forced into a corner where she had to put on a disguise.

"Thank you, uncle." Isabella curled her lips into a smile. "I’ll look forward to tomorrow!"

The smile on her lips was different from the smiles she showed them in the past.

If the couple weren’t distracted by their success, they would’ve found that a cold, murderous glint appeared in her eyes, laughing at their naivety.
